Title: Caroline ALLEN JEWELL & Bert HIGHLEY
Post by: Greaves on Friday 30 July 21 00:11 BST (UK)
Caroline Allen JEWELL married Bert HIGHLEY in Newport in Q1 1911. The 1911 census then has the newly weds living with his uncle Alfred HIGHLEY at 6 Islwyn Street, Abercarn. Bert is 35 and Caroline is 26.

After this I totally lose track of the couple. I would appreciate any help in locating the couple post 1911.

Thanks for the above. So it appears that Bert died in 1933, but was he a widower?

We now know that Caroline was alive in 1918 when Selina was born, but after that they both seem to disappear. I can find no deaths or indeed any other mention for either of them. Nor can I find any more children from the marriage.

I would be very grateful if your sleuthing could turn something up on Caroline.

No obvious re-marriage for Caroline post 1933 & no death pre or post.  The only way you would know if he was a widower is via his death cert

Nothing for Selina either.  Her birth was in Glamorgan - not Monmouth - wonder why?

Sorry, but my internet has been down for reasons only known to BT.

I have sent for the death certificate, so we will see his status when he died. But meanwhile I am still perplexed by Caroline and Selina.

I have no idea why Glamorgan rather than Monmouth, but then on this family I don't have many ideas.

I would still be grateful for any additional insights.

Have you found Caroline on the 1891/1901 census?  I can't find an entry nor a birth reg.  Supposedly born 1885 Siddington/Cirencester

Caroline Allen JEWELL - Q1 1886 Cirencester 6a 382 MMN Jones.

1891C Caroline JEWELL (4)  RG12 2007 101 5. Mistakenly her birthplace is given as Herefordshire!

In 1901, I believe based on age that she is named as Emily JEWELL (14), RG13 2469 38

Clearly the same family in 1891 and 1901. No idea as to why the name change.

So Caroline in 1891, Clara noted as second wife on census and her place of birth given as Chalford. Edgar's place of birth is Siddington.

John Edgar or Edgar John ( he used both!) had potentially 3 wives:

Emily Mary JONES

Clara

Mary HARWOOD/AMOS/JEWELL/BARNES.

The only known marriage register is for Emily.

Allen was the maiden name of John Edgar's mother.

Her baptism which is on Ancestry gives her name as Caroline Allen. As does her later marriage.

I have been looking into what became of Caroline and Selina and needed to get some proof to confirm my theory, now I have it.

The 1911 Marriage of Bert & Caroline didn't last very long and Caroline set up home with William Francis Johnson. This is the sequence of events from that point.
1915 Pontypridd    Birth of William Francis Johnson mmn Jewell
1918 Pontypridd    Birth of Selina Highley mmn Jewell
1918 Pontypridd    Birth of Selina Irene Johnson mmn Jewell
I ordered the pdf's for both Selina births as I thought they might be the same person and they are.

Wow! You have been busy. Sending for the PDFs goes well beyond what can be expected.

I am very grateful for these insights. They simply changed their names, no wonder I couldn't find them.

Presumably Caroline died as a Johnson, possibly in Somerset.

Once again many thanks. Your skills clearly surpass mine. I'm impressed.

I've really enjoyed the searching and this was an interesting quest. At the moment I don't have any mysteries that can be solved by a couple of pdf's. Ordered Monday and arrived Wednesday, great service.

Indeed, very quick service. I ordered the PDF for Bert, though this wasn't so helpful. He died 27 Apr 1903 at 4 Marsh Villas, High Street, Newbridge, Abercarn, aged 57. He was then a labourer in a tinplate works. He died of pneumonia following a fractured rib received from a fall in a bedroom! There was an inquest (28 April 1933), but no PM. All of which was interesting, but of little help in finding his wife and daughter.

Glad you enjoyed the chase.

I have another one in preparation, once I can sort it sufficiently to make a coherent post. Once again it involves a wife leaving her husband and children, to live with someone else! Seems to have happened a lot in my family!
