Title: High Elms in Hitchen, 1939?
Post by: corinne on Friday 06 August 21 14:27 BST (UK)
Does anyone know of a High Elms in Hitchen (not High Elms Manor near Garston), in the same vicinity as the Boys Grammar School, Elmside Cottage, New Grammar School Walk, and Bedford Road.   I have found an entry for a 10 year old child at this address in 1939, listed as a "patient".   I think part of the address has been blacked out but the first line definitely says "High Elms emergency.."   so I'm thinking it was some kind of childrens home, hospital, or convalescent facility.

The Phillips family appear to be living at High Elms, Grammar school Walk in 1911

Can t find any other later mention at the moment.

I wonder if some sort of " hospital" for the pupils of the school, there are two nurses mentioned at the end of the 1939 entry.

Hi I think High Elms is a footpath that runs between Bedford Road and Fishponds Road. There is a house called Elmside adjacent to the path. It would be worth looking at the OS 6inch maps held by the National Library of Scotland. The one of interest is Hertfordshire X11.NW 1938-1946
