Could somebody please explain to me, slowly, how to find my way round the National Archives. My ggg grandfather Bernard (possibly Barnard) Chance b 1765 Eversholt, died Westoning, was a Chelsea Pensioner. I have been trying to get hold of his war records but am getting nowhere.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Steph
Do you mean the website or the actual archives themselves in Kew, London?

Hi Steph
Have a look at the research leaflet for soldiers discharged to pension:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14
Most of the soldiers discharged to pension appear in the online index (search the catalogue "procat" for chance with class/serial ref WO97 but he doesn't appear I'm afraid so it looks like a trip to Kew to find him in the records perhaps.
There is also a leaflet for Soldiers' Pensions:
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=15
Do you have any more info ie. when was he in the army/discharged/died? Where did the "Chelsea Pensioner" info come from? Any idea of regiment?
Best wishes

Hi
Many thanks for replying. I was given this info and took it at face value - I'll have to go away and check it.
Thanks so much for the advice, I'll print it off and keep it for future use.
