Title: James Lincoln - Never married or had Children?..
Post by: Lincoln1955 on Monday 30 August 21 22:29 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone
I am fairly new to researching family history so I am hoping people can.confirm what I believe to be correct,
that James Lincoln born  in 1847 in purleigh, Essex  to Joseph and Mary Lincoln and who died aged 35 in 1882 did not ever marry or have children.

Is someone else could kindly check and confirm this, I would be so grateful.

Did you get the death certificate? Who was the informant?

Hi jonw65

Yes I did get death certificate. Sister Sarah Smith nee Lincoln was the informant. He had ‘Diseased Lungs, 2 years, haemotemposis one month.

Hi
That doesn't sound too pleasant. It doesn't look as though James married, nothing showed up in Essex that I can recall.
If someone finds one, then I am sure they will let you know!

Thanks jonw65.
Feeling very connected to my Lincoln family. They all seem to have had a tough life. Sad that James never married or had kids if that is the case, which seems likely.

Hopefully somebody will be able to confirm this for me as I am not confident yet in my research skills.
Thank you again.

I think you can rest assured that he didn't marry.  He was still single in 1871 living in Purleigh, Essex.

The fact that his sister registered his death very much suggests that he was still single.  Did he die at home and if so what was the address?

In theory he should be on the 1881 census but doesn't seem to appear on there.

He died in Stow Maries
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=852232.0

One oddity in the 1881 census was a William Lincoln in Woodham Ferrers. Age 34, married, occupation Horseman, born Purleigh. Lodging on a farm.
That is the only appearance of a William Lincoln of that sort of age in Essex.

Also in Woodham in 1881, William Lincoln, 46, Ag Lab, born Purleigh. Married to Elizabeth.
William brother of James?
Was he recorded twice with age wrong on one entry?

Going back to 1871, Woodham Ferrers
William Lincoln, lodger, 33, Labourer, born Purleigh

Whilst in Stow Maries in 1871 at the Wheatsheaf Inn
William Lincoln, lodger, 33, Labourer, born Purleigh
(ancestry say 32)

So in 1871 he does seem to have been enumerated twice. There seems to be only the one William from Purleigh.

That looks interesting Jon, can you supply the census refs as I can't come up with a William in 1871 using your info.

Hi GG
In 1871 in Woodham Ferrers (Ferris)
Piece 1660 folio 50 page 17

And in Stow Maries
Piece 1673 folio 72 page 2

Very close to each other, but in different registration districts.
Can't give links to FamilySearch, there still seem to be problems with their 1871 census.

Hhmm interesting.  I see that William's birth year is c 1838 so nearly ten years older than James.

I don't know if perhaps William was visiting the pub on census night but lived in Stow Maries.

James is in the 1871 at Piece 1673 Folio 115 Page 6

Quite probably, GG :)
It did pass through my mind that William, 34, in 1881 just might be James with his name wrong. I do sometimes wonder if the details about some lodgers in the census are wholly accurate! But then there is also the fact it said he was married, and there is no sign that James was. Not to mention occupation "Horseman"

I have asked Lincoln to provide the address that is on the death certificate.  It may be worth checking it in the 1881 census.

James Lincoln did have a brother called William Henry born in Purleigh in1836 whodid marry.

I believe it was Woodham Ferris going from memory.believe he married a widow.some bit older than him and they didn’t have children together although I need to double check all of this.

Thank you all so much.
Can’t find James in 1881 census which I would love to know where he was. His mum Susannah Lincoln and her partner Thomas Enifer were in the Maldon workhouse.

There is no address on the death certificate, only states, Stow Marries. Believe someone else posted that she found info stAting he died whilst on a trip to Stow Maries. Whether that was a day trip or a longer visit we do t know.

As you say as his sister Sarah Smith nee Lincoln was the informant that would suggest he didn’t marry.

Would it be very rare not to be married at the age of 35 in the 1870-80s. Maybe he wasn’t the best catch!

I wouldn't regard the fact that he was unmarried at the age of 35 unusual.  Not everyone wants to get married and that was probably just as likely in Victorian times as it is today.

Thanks for your post. His brother William didn’t get married till in his 30s either. Just thought it was unusual. Their mother Susannah left their father so maybe that didn’t help.

I see that James was baptised on 24 October 1847 at Purleigh.  Father Joseph, mother Susannah but there is a note that says FATHER'S SURNAME not recorded in register - has been defaulted to CHILD'S SURNAME.

Can't see any likely birth registration for James either, so presumably an illegitimate birth.  Did Susannah marry?

Susannah Clarke married Joseph Lincoln on 31/8/1830 in Purleigh. On the 1851 census onwards until her death she lived with Thomas Enifer and they both died in the workhouse in the 1880s.

Okay, so one has to assume that for whatever reason James's birth was not registered.

Yes it would appear that James birth no registered.

There may be no Maldon RD births in Sep quarter 1847 on the new GRO birth index :(
But the original index has
Lincoln, James Carter
Sep 1847 Maldon, vol 12 page 130

Hi
So James birth was registered then. I guess it had to be as after 1837.

Thanks for helping,

Hi Garstonite

Thanks for your post. I believe Susannah Clarke was born in 1811 and married in 1830 so that would make her 19 years old.

Think she would have been 36 when James born or am I doing the math wrong!

Susannah left her husband Joseph Lincoln and went to live with Thomas Enifer a widower and his children and Susannah took James with her. If you check 1841 census Thomas is on the same page aged 25 with his wife Martha. Susannah’s husband Joseph. and her 2 other boys, Edward and William were in Maldon workhouse.

In the 1871 c3nsus Susannah is listed as Thomas Enifer’s sister and her 2 boys as Thomas’ nephews
Which of course is incorrect. s

In 1851 Susan's age actually reads "about 20/25"  Even the upper age is not correct!
