Title: Mary TAPLIN
Post by: Greaves on Thursday 09 September 21 10:59 BST (UK)
Mary TAPLIN was born c1850, probably in Buckinghamshire. She was baptised on 02 Jun 1850 at Tingewick, her mother's home village. Her parents were John Taplin and Caroline Holton.

Her father worked as a labourer on the railways and followed work around the country. In 1851, for instance, the family were based in Battle in Sussex. According to the census, Mary was not yet one, whilst her elder sister Emma, who had been born in Letchworth was one. Emma was born 22 May 1849, which puts a limit on Mary's birth. On the census, Mary's place of birth is Tingewick.

The other limit comes from Mary's early death on 22 Dec 1853 in Dudley, Worcestershire.

I know that sometimes children escaped being registered in these early years of registration, but I suspect that Mary was as all her siblings were promptly registered. I think the problem is that I am either looking in the wrong locations due to the parents roaming lifestyle. Or that her name has been wrongly transcribed.

I would really like to find a record of her birth.

As always, all help greatly appreciated.

Sorry no luck with a registration  :-\

Was the birth for Emma registered promptly?

Emma was born 22 May 1849 and her birth registered 11 Jun 1849. Is that prompt? Probably not by today's standards.

Registration was not the responsibility of the parents at that time so Marys birth could easily have been missed.

Greaves, I trust you know how John, Caroline and 3 daughters met a very sad end.

Yes, the Northfleet disaster. On their way to Tasmania to build a railway. Luckily for me, my Great Great Grandmother, Mary Ann, was left behind, being of a more advanced age. Only two daughters drowned, Sarah and Caroline. Maria famously was rescued, but died a few years later in an orphanage.
