Title: Royal Navy 1865 query
Post by: vapcq45 on Saturday 11 September 21 16:19 BST (UK)
Can anyone please help in deciphering the writing across this Enlistment record that says "Discharged....."?

Frederick joined in 1854 as a boy 2nd class and by his marriage in Sept 1865 had left the Navy.

I thought that if they joined for 10 years that was 10 years from the age of 18?

Also - I can't find his service papers on Ancestry, FindMyPast or National Archives - shall I give up or could they be somewhere else?

Many thanks!

Ah, so he did buy himself out, I did wonder.

Do you think below says £72?

Thank you so much!

It looks more like £12 to me, but its not a very clear copy.  I think what you are seeing as the 'bar' on the 7 is actually the t from August.
