Hello
In the 1851 * ( apology previously wrote 1841) Census Joseph Brocklehurst gives his place of birth as SCROSS, Derby. Any help in deciphering what this name place actually is would be appreciated .
-
The 1841 Census did not give the name of place of birth. It just stated whether the person was born in the county or not, or in Scotland, Ireland or Foreign Parts.
-
Thank you . I ve now corrected my post to say 1851 Census.
-
Where are you finding this info?
I can't replicate it on either FindMyPast or Ancestry?
When was Joseph born?
-
There are 41 men named Joseph Brocklehurst in the 1851 Census. I have looked at images of the original Census entry and not one has a birthplace of Scross or anything similar.

I can't see any possible candidates either, hence why I asked where is the OP seeing this info?

Hello
I'm using Family Search , below is the reference and Ive attached a screen shot of the info I'm questioning . Joseph was married to Mary Hamer in 1847. I'm trying to establish for D.O.B and his parents .
"England and Wales Census, 1851," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG5H-K19 : 12 September 2019), Joseph Brocklehurst in household of Ellis Hamer, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England; citing Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, p. , from "1851 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO HO 107, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey.

Having looked at the original it is very water damaged. However pob looks like Glossop to me.

Thank you .

Yes I agree with that- Derby Glossop.

There is a nonconformist baptism in Glossop 15 March 1821 for a Joseph, son of John, a Farmer, and Mary Brocklehurst. Abode Chinley.
There is also a death in 1878 in Ashton under Lyne so he should be in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses to confirm pob.
-
Fantastic . Thank you both.

The marriage is on Family Search, complete with banns image.

I can only find one Joseph Broclehurst born 1822 with father George and he was baptised in Stockport to George, a Weaver, and Anne. Abode Hillgate.
In the 1871 census Joseph gives pob as Stockport.
-
Hello & many thanks again to you both .
I actually have a copy of his marriage certificate and therefore believe his fathers name is George. Charles Brocklehurst is also a witness to the marriage. I can find George and his sons Charles & Joseph plus younger siblings in many census records but the true pob of Joseph and pob of his parents remains a bit of a mystery to date. Thanks for clarifying the " SCROSS " mystery. I'll have to spend a lot more time on mapping out the dates and their movements to get to the bottom of it , if I ever can. Thanks for your time and efforts today .
-
It looks to me like Glossop as well.
However, there is a tree on another genealogy site which refers to the 1861 and 1871 censuses where he gives his place of birth as Stockport.
-
Thanks Graham . I'll go with Stockport as pob .
-
Hi All that have responded.
Ive just found a place called Shallcross, Derbyshire which is not too far from Stockport, Cheshire. I 'll spend sometime in the near future looking into that area for his father & mother, boundary changes etc. I'm no expert but I'm beginning to question if parents had children baptised when they settled in the larger mill towns & not in their pob if it's a hamlet or tiny village . If only I had all day to spend on this.....

Hi,
Note occupation of the Father George is a “dresser” on marriage certificate for Joseph
Is this the family 1841 Census Stockport
HO107/113/5
Piece: 113
Folio: 29
Page Number: 7
All born Cheshire
George Brocklehurst 35. “Cotton DRESSER”
Ann Brocklehurst 35
Joseph Brocklehurst 15
Charles Brocklehurst 15
Jane Brocklehurst 14
William Brocklehurst 9
Sarah Brocklehurst 6
Mary Brocklehurst 4
Frederick Brocklehurst 1
Remember in 1841 census adult age 15 and over were rounded down, so aged 15 could be aged between 15-19.

Thank you Spendlove for both posts. I wasn't aware that rounding down could mean by as much as 4 years, so thanks for that and also flagging up the incorrect age for his mother. There are so many discrepancies in the census for this family, hence the need to check more than one source.
-
Thanks Graham . I'll go with Stockport as pob .

There were many families who originated from the Ancient Parish of Glossop who moved to Stockport, Ashton and so on for work but went back to the parish for baptisms (and sometimes burials). For that reason the Chinley baptism shouldn't be dismissed without checking.
The main Brocklehurst line in the Glossop parish was in the Charlesworth area.

Thanks John & Graham H for your input . I'll look again at that Baptism in Chinley although his fathers' name is George on his marriage certificate and this is supported in the Census. However, as Ive found to cost you can follow the wrong family if you accept the info from only one source as being correct.
-
The occupation of father on baptism records is a pretty good indication that this is your family
