Title: Help with an Occupation

I simply cannot figure out the occupation on the fourth line.  Driving me crazy!

A shoemaker from the use of Cordoban leather .( Spanish leather)
Sounds as if it ought to be ropes doesn’t it?

Thank you both for the quick responses.  I have learned a new word, even if it is now considered archaic!  Also very helpful because I have another citation for an individual where it's mentioned that he is a shoemaker.  Now I know I'm dealing with the same person.  :)
