If you can quote a reference for one of those censuses, that would help people looking.

In terms of the birth reference for Thomas, is the maiden name from the birth certificate?

And checking maiden names - if you search on the GRO website (https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/) you can look for a birth ref and it quotes mother's maiden name.  You need to register, but it's free.

Can you clarify when and where the children Thomas, Anne, Bridget and is Mary a daughter or the mother, were born please?

The 1871 reference is not full enough.  The information required to find it is Piece no, Folio no and Page no.

Although you state living in Hull I can't seem to find anything relevant.

Thanks Heywood.  I see the surname has suffered presumably from it being mis-heard.

Doesn't look like the parents registered the Hull born children.  Can't find any records even just using p* on free bmd.  Wasn't a legal requirement at that time so finding Mary's maiden name is proving difficult.

Is it likely that any marriage record can be found for Luke & Mary?  I'm not well up on Irish records so not sure whether this would be available.

This is the problem with this surname, open to all sorts of spelling variations.  That baptism looks good but can a marriage be found for the parents.  ???

I think I thought in the other thread that might not be the right baptism in view of the Machon surname.

Christine, does Mary give Mayo as her birthplace in the any of the censuses?
Do you have Mary’s birth certificate?

Thank you all so much.. yes Heywood you did supply the info if Machon a few years ago.. just getting back into research. I am confused as I saw Thomas son of Luke Prendergast and Mary Neals.   , was unsure if Mary's maiden name was Machon or Neals.. I still cant find where to look on GRO , how did you find maiden name of Macon ..

Civil registration of births in Ireland started 1864. Those from 1864 to less than 100 years old are available (free) on this government site-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

For earlier dates you are dependant of finding surviving church records.

I mean the birth certificate for Mary
This site shows the mother’s name. You have to sign in but it is free.

Thank you Heywood, I have just registered on GRO and found the birth of Mary 1864 showing Machon as mothers maiden name. ( like you said previously)  . Confused as Thomas has  Mary Neals as mother,  wondering if that's a different Luke and Mary , there seems a lot of Prendergast when searching..!
Would a birth certificate for Mary born 1864 show me anything different to mothers maiden name Machon

No, it wouldn’t, I suppose.

I have just been going through the records for the children. It is so frustrating that there aren’t births for the others.

I presume they were Catholic and there could be local baptisms but records aren’t online.

Prendergast is a more common surname in Mayo than one might imagine. Griffiths Valuation gave me two and a half times as many results for Prendergast (+ variants) as for my own Mayo/Roscommon surname. Even my grandma's surname, locally common to Mayo, had only 100 more results then Prendergast. There was a Prendergast in my grandma's small townland.

Thomas and Bridget both born Ireland , on some census it says Anne is born Ireland and on others it says Hull ?? They did seem to change things on the census.. I think Machon is definitely Mothers maiden name . It's a big help knowing how to access GRO , never used it before.. thank you

Discrepancies may have been a clerical error by the census enumerator when he was copying household returns into his book. A census enumerator in a town in Lancashire where some of my Irish ancestors lived put ditto marks for "Ireland" all the way down a page although only the people at the top of the page were Irish-born. The rest were born in towns & villages in Lancashire.
