Title: Charles Bevan Hamilton Canada
Post by: Black Sheep on Monday 11 October 21 17:48 BST (UK)
Hello, this is my first posting in the Canadian board so all new to me.

I am trying to find out more about the Bevan family when they arrived in Canada.

Charles Bevan born 1843 berriew - 1930
Emma Ward Bevan born 1844  Bushbury Staffordshire 1844

Children
Mary Jane 1862    Willenhall Staffordshire
Emma 1864         Willenhall Staffordshire
Martha 1867        Willenhall Staffordshire
Florence 1869      Willenhall Staffordshire
Louisa 1871         Willenhall Staffordshire

I found them last in the 1871 Census at Smokey Row Willenhall Wolverhamton, I think that they may have emigrated before 1883 to Wentworth Canada first ?? I believe that Emma may have died in 1907 and Charles in 1930 in Hamilton  ??? ???

I believe that Charles had other siblings (Alfred b 1847) that also went to Canada including his mother Ester Bevan nee Jones 1813-1892 who must have arrived after becoming widowed from her husband Thomas Bevan (1802-1876)

Hoping to find out more about this side of the family.

I took a quick look.  Ontario doesn't have a BMD database.  You have to use Census/Family Search/Newspapers.

I suggest you search here https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx which includes 1921 which I think has your Charles, he claims he was from Wales.

The is having all daughters and not knowing if they married and to whim it becomes a bigger task.

Family Search have a lot of Bevan records in Hamilton perhaps they are here.  There is a death of an Eunina Bevan in 1907 Age 63 which is probably a bad transcript of Emma.

Hello Don and dbree,

Thanks for the link to the National records, wow I have just been going through some of the records they have so much more information than UK census returns I have been learning a lot. It is amazing how many children they had, that will keep me busy, It was lovely to see the extended family joining the emigration.

Thanks again

P.S How do I work out the address from the census returns ??

Hi,

You won't find addresses in the early Canadian census', it was only district, sub district, township,
wards, but you will in the latter ones.

Alfred Bevan is transcribed in 1891 as Beron, he is in Muskoka with Mum Esther.

Bevan, Alfred, age 45, b. Wales, farmer
Bevan, Frances, age 55, b. Wales
Bevan, Matilda, age 22 b. Wales
Bevan, Alfred, age 17 b. England
Bevan, Thomas, age 13 b. Ontario
Bevan, Esther, age 83, b. Wales

Alfred dies in Rainy River, Ontario 27 April 1937, b. 30 Oct. 1847, North Wales, parents Thomas
Bevan and Esther Jones. Informant was daughter Matilda Thomson, Fort Francis, Ontario

The 1881 census has another child with Alfred and Francis, an Arthur Bevan age 15. His origin is given as English as opposed to Welch for everyone else. Wonder who he is? He didn't appear on the passenger list with the rest of the family. He apparently gives Alfred and Francis as his parents when he marries in 1890.

Interesting.
If Arthur really was 15 in 1881, then that puts his birth around 1866 & before his parents’ marriage. He may have arrived in Canada under another surname if he was an illegitimate son of either parent. I wonder if he was Frances' son? - she was about 10 years older than her husband.

But when Arthur marries Olive Amelia Ferguson in April 1890, he puts his age at 21, so born about 1869. He also says birth place is London.
Arthur seems to disappear – I can’t find him after 1890. In the 1891 census Olive is back living with her parents, apparently “single”. Then it seems that she marries (as a spinster) in 1893 to a Thomas Addison.
