Title: Some Ghostly Tales of Shropshire
Post by: alveleyhistorian on Thursday 01 September 05 08:34 BST (UK)
Hi there,
Does some kind person possibly have a copy of
"SOME GHOSTLY TALES OF SHROPSHIRE" by Christine McCarthy ??
I would be most interested to know what it says about a place called "Hall Close, Alveley"
This was a place I often visited as a child and I knew the ghost story - but tried to remember it the other day, and could'nt remember a thing !

Any help much appreciated

a windowed room has no internal access, look through it and there are no floorboards, apparently a man hanged himself here.

Christmas morning 1983 - an elderly couple appeared asking for Dolly- later later found to be the owners dead parents.

a girl awoke to see a stout man with white hair sitting at an old fashioned writing desk.
another nightthe room was full of what appeared to be cats eyes staring at her.

her sister awoke to find a manstanding over her getting ready to strangle her.

a brother saw a crying woman with a rope and a dagger who beckoned him"come with me,come with me,my husband is being hanged"

their other brother,Paul saw an elderly woman.

do these ring any bells?

don't forget that the ghost of a young horseman haunts Coton Hall at midnight on Christmas eve.

Oh Dear ! this made me laugh !
"Dolly" is still is alive and living in a nursing home in Alveley ! ( Yes, I checked )
But the rest as a familar ring - the son was called Paul.

Re - Coton Hall - yes, I remember my great grandmother telling me something about a horseman, but can't remember it all, could you remind me what the book says ??

Many thanks  :) :) :) :) :)

possibly - there was a Christine (maiden name McCarthy) living in Alveley a couple of years ago, but no sure if she's still there.

a son of one of the previous owners of Coton Hall was bought a white horse. It was a Christmas present but he was too impatient and had it early.whilst riding through the park he hit his head on a branch, fell and died of a broken neck.

a Mr Les Hunt,an ex coalminer, walked a member of staff back to the Hall one Christmas eve.
At the bottom of the park where the lane starts he saw a heavy gate open and close by itself.

Is there anyone who could ask Dolly about her memories of Hall Close farm?
