I am seeking to clarify the details of my great grandmother Frances Tolhurst and her parents.
These are all the details that I have -
My grandmother, Florence Anne Tolhurst, was christened at Leeds in Kent on 17th April 1881. The Parish Register record indicates her parents were Frederick and Frances.
Frederick Tolhurst married Frances Peters on 18th March 1876 at Leeds, Kent. (Hollingbourne Vol 2a Page 788 and Mid Kent Marriage Index confirm). Parish Register identifies Frances Peters’ father as Thomas Peters.
Frederick Tolhurst was christened at Leeds in Kent on 22nd July 1843. Parents: Thomas and Mary (Ledger). Frederick died in April 1893. (Maidstone District Vol 2a Page 426).
Census details give the following –
1881 Census. Frances Tolhurst. Event Place: Leeds, Kent. Birth Place: Leeds, Kent. Birth Year (Estimated) 1855. Married.
1891 Census. Frances Tolhurst. Event Place: Leeds,Birth Place: Kent. Birth Year (Estimated) 1853. Married.
1901 Census. Frances Tolhurst. Event Place: Leeds, Birth Place: Maidstone, Kent. Birth Year (Estimated) 1855. Widowed.
Frances died in 1933 age 77. Estimated Birth Year 1856. (Hollingbourne District Vol 2a Page 1610).
The name is recorded as Frances M Tolhurst. This is the first reference to ‘M’ that I’ve found and there is a vague recollection that this could stand for Matilda although this is by no means certain.
I have come across a Frances Rebecca Peters, christened on 31st January 1847 in Snodland, Kent, Parents: Thomas Peters and Sarah. However this does not fit with the estimated birth year range provided from the census and death records and the middle name does not fit with the ‘M’ on the death record.
Any help with details for Frances M Peters (Tolhurst) and her parents would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked on birth indexes for Frances Peters in Kent?
-
It looks like Frances Rebecca Peters married Edward William Beadle Dec 1874 Gravesend.
-
Parish Register identifies Frances Peters’ father as Thomas Peters.
Do you have his occupation from the marriage certificate or just a name?

Death
Frances Maria Tolhurst 77

Thomas Peters was a labourer on the marriage image ( on FMPast)

Frances place of birth is given as Maidstone in 1881/91 and 1901.
There is a Frances Peters age 15 occ Servant in Maidstone in 1871 place of birth Carshalton, Surrey. In 1861 she is also in Maidstone parents Levi and Mary Ann. Levi died in 1873
I realise that the fathers name is not Thomas but have you eliminated this one. :-\. I note that Fredericks father was also Thomas.
-
Alternatively could she be the Fanny Peters who is in Maidstone workhouse in 1871, I see she originally signed the marriage register as Fanny which was crossed through
Have you investigated that one :-\

Emma Tolhurst & James Medhurst

Hi All,
Thanks for the input.
Re the witnesses to Frederick Tolhurst and Frances Peters' marriage, James Medhurst was married to Emily Tolhurst. Emily (b.1853 in Leeds, Kent) was the sister of Frederick Tolhurst. James and Emily were married on 18th October 1873 in Chart Sutton.
So far a search of the birth indexes for Frances Peters / Frances M Peters with a fathers name of Thomas, birthplace of Kent and a birth range of 1849 to 1857 had not yielded any meaningful results.
This branch of the family is heavily centred around the Leeds, Lenham, Harrietsham, Malling area and, although not ruling any other location or county out, the census records do support Leeds / Maidstone as the birth area.
I've not investigated Fanny in the Workhouse so will have a look.
Thanks again for the input.

Death
Aug 7th, Fanny Maria Peters, Orchard Street, aged 23
-
Thank you, so she was the daughter of Levi. Her mother Mary Ann is at 26 Orchard Street in 1881
-
Hi Guys,
You beat me to it ! ;D
The death date of 1878 rules out Fanny Maria Peters.
Thomas Peters the engine drive is deserving of a further look - thank you.
Censuses are not being a lot of help at the moment.
Francis Peters has been a brick wall for me for months so all clues or thoughts are a help.
Thanks to all.

Is this a different one we haven't ruled out?
Fanny Maria Peters baptised 8 Dec 1856
Saint John Redhill Surrey
Mother Mary Peters
If so then maybe Mary Peters married a Thomas and Frances switched his surname to Peters.
Have seen that done before.

There is a Thomas Peters appearing on Maidstone Criminal registers in 1866. (Burglary) he was imprisoned.
I see that the father Henry Peters on the marriage Annette suggested for Thomas was a paper maker.
ADDED. I see that in 1851 and later census there is a Henry Peters with wife Frances in Loose/ East Farleigh, his occupation Paper maker. Henry Peters married Frances Tolhurst June qtr 1848, I wonder who his father is :-\

If, as I suggested earlier, that Frances Maria is the Fanny Maria Peters birth regd Mar.1856 Maidstone, mmn Pierce and that parents were the Thomas Peters, engine driver, and Ann Pierce married 13/4/1855, then Thomas Peters would indeed appear to be the son of Henry Peters, paper maker. Fanny appears to have been the only child of this union.
Have discovered that said Thomas Peters emigrated to Toronto, Canada ca. 1857 (according to one census) and that he supposedly married again to a Mary with at least 6 children born ca.1860 to 1870. He continued to be an engine driver.
Can't find him in immigration records ca.1857 but if the date is accurate he went to Canada the year after dau. Fanny born so does one assume that he abandoned wife Ann and dau. Fanny? Perhaps they were in a workhouse in 1861 which is why we can't find them on 1861 census.
Think we should be concentrating on Ann Peters, nee Pierce to find out what became of her.

Annette, I think that the marriage you found is exactly who we are looking for. :). The fact that Thomas married in Carshalton and Levis daughter Fanny was born in Carshalton suggests that is too much of a coincidence. Well done on finding him in Canada afterwards
Thomas is a builders labourer in 1851 living Westminster

Sorry for the delay in responding.
Thank you all for your input and information. It's given me a new direction for investigation.

Some parts of the 1861 for Maidstone are missing so that could account for Fanny and her mother Ann not being found.

Thanks Rosie.
With lots of my paternal line coming from the Leeds, Lenham, Harrietsham, Malling and adjacent areas I've come across the issue of missing records in the past. What a pain !
It's just one of the 'joys' of tracing the ancestors.
Thanks for youe input. It is really appreciated.
