Post by: Shrop63 on Wednesday 27 October 21 12:41 BST (UK)
Anyone know where Stable Row would have been in around 1850 Bilston? Think it was under St Marys district? Thanks.

In the 1851 census it is enumerated between Tup Street and New Street in St Mary's.

The only New Street I can see is on this later map but no Stable Row or Tup St is shown  :-\   https://maps.nls.uk/view/115475514#zoom=6&lat=9971&lon=11660&layers=BT

Perhaps those streets made way for the railway station in 1854?

It is possible.   There is more than 30 years difference between the 1851 census and the map. Comparing the street names for Bilston in the 1851 and 1861 there seem to have been many changes just in 10 year period.

I think Tup Street was renamed Cross Street at some time, it is in the Bradley area of Bilston.  There is a mention in 1855 newspapers of "Stable Row, Bradley" and "Tup Street, Bradley, near Bilston" and also in an 1884 newspaper of "Stable Row, Cross Street, Bradley".

This website of Black Country pubs lists the Old Bush Pub in Cross Street (Tup Lane), Bradley Bridge, (Bradley Lane), (Upper Bradley) Bradley, BILSTON.

Tup Bridge on Cross Street is shown at the bottom left of this recent map.

Thsnks Jool that makes a lot of sense. My GFX4 moved the family to Stable Row aroind 1850. Later his wife was living in Cross Street in the 1871 census, must be the same house.

Well found Jool.    :)

Leigh St Stable Row is included in the 1861 description of the Enumeration District for the area that  includes Cross St.  If you have access to Anc http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r0t/ and http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r0t/

Leigh St is shown on the last link that Jool posted and on this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/115475917#zoom=6&lat=7642&lon=10235&layers=BT
