Title: Help - looking for parents of late father
Post by: PaulC82 on Tuesday 02 November 21 17:40 GMT (UK)
Hi All

I'm hoping you can help me- Iv gone through various sites and just can't push through these stumbling blocks. The query is around three families.

One
I'm looking for the names of the late John Bertram Bradley's parents.  John’s DOB is May 1951 and date of passing September 2005. John has two older sisters- unsure if they are living.

Two
Alexander Henderson Milne date of birth circa 1929. Date of passing unknown. Alex married in 1952 and later divorced. The copy of the marriage registration states he was born in Cape. Any information here would be helpful. Parents/ remarriage?

Three
Harold Leslie Smith
Born 26 August 1909- unknown location. Died April 1979 in South Africa. His late wife was Margaret Tannahill Smith nee Cain. Born 1928 in Scotland. Date of passing unknown.

I do apologise for the heavy quest load. I do feel I have hit a solid wall.

OOPS - disregard details below. Wrong man. Is 'Henderson Milne' the surname?

Family Search has a Probate Record dated 1938 for a William Alexander Milne (age 48, born Stoke Newington, England). The image lists three children, including a son (born 1920).

The naming used on the marriage registration document was incorrectly transcribed on family search. There is also a transcription error with the spelling of his former wife. Iv queried this with them and awaiting a reply.
His given name was Alexander Henderson Milne.

🙂

Your header says "looking for parents of late father"  so which of the 3 names is the "late father"?

Where was John B Bradley born?   Any useful info on his death cert ?  Have you looked for an obit?
Did he marry?  Is his wife still alive - any info there?

Where do these people fit into your FH - are they connected to each other in any way?

Hi Mckha489.
Thank you for that. Much appreciate the help.

Hi CarolW

Harold Leslie Smith is related to my stepfather.

WRT John Bradley- yes we are looking for the names of his parents. His estate file didn’t hold any information that we didn’t know. His parents had passed away in his teens. He married and later divorced.
Place of passing was Johannesburg in 2005.
John Bertram Bradley is related to Alexander Henderson Milne through marriage. Alex was John’s father in law. Iv looked for obituaries, gone through various spellings or variations of names, scrolled though ancestry, Gendata, Family Search etc.  We don’t have any other information at hand.
I hope Iv answered all your queries

Thank you

If Alexander H Milne was John's father in law then John Bertram Bradley must have married a female with the surname Milne.

Yes that is correct. She is still living and from my understanding not allowed to share her personal details on this platform.
We (ex wife) and I are looking for this information.

We’re building a family tree to pass onto the next generation

Have you asked her about his parentage & where he was born?  Details of living persons is not allowed but it is permitted to post details of anybody who is deceased.

She could also supply you with details of her father

If you have her contact details it seems the most logical way to obtain the information about both Bradley & Milne

Unfortunately she did not have the information. Both the living person and myself are working together to try and find information.
They married long after JBB’s parents had passed. And was seldom spoken of.

Nothing noted on the wedding certificate or in the estate file.

His date of birth is 09 May 1951. I’m guessing that most information would still be protected under the personal information act.

She must know where he was born?  If he is dead - you can post info about him.

Two

When we expand the rather brief details for #2 the result is:

Alexander Henderson MILNE b abt 1928 Cape Town, occ: Traffic Inspector (1952)

X 5 Jan 1952 Johannesburg Tvl https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS27-G35F-N

Margaret Lilian Elsie PIENAAR b abt 5 apr 1932 Tvl, d 18 May 2002 (NB estate in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal)

And with this information,  the following can be found in the archives as part of their divorce details (abt 1970),:
JUDICIAL SEPARATION. MARGARET LILIAN MILNE VERSUS (1) ALEXANDER (2) MARGO HATTINGH

“MARGO(T) HATTINGH” is mentioned in the archives as follows:
MARGOT HATTINGH (FORMERLY ANDREWS, BORN CROUGH) VERSUS RONALD CHARLES ANDREWS”
MARGOT HATTINGH VERSUS JOSIAS ALEXANDER HATTINGH
DIVORCE. MARGOT HATTINGH (BORN CROUCH, FORMERLY ANDREWS) VERSUS JOSIAS ALEXANDER

Finally, there is a widow Margot MILNE (nee CROUCH) b 20 May 1933, d 27 Mar 2003 (place of death: JHB) mentioned among the Pretoria estates. Her husband was Alexander MILNE.
And, with Margot’s name as spouse, there is an Alexander MILNE b 17 Mar 1928, d Sep 1982 ….

FYI
PaulC82 should have mentioned that Margaret's background has already been researched previously.

Hi TreeSpirit,

Thank you for your help. I had no idea that you could access divorce records in such detail. Thank you.

WRT Margaret Tannahill Cain- I will now know that I should mention what has been established.
Everyday is a learning.

Thank you so much for the above.
