Title: Kinkele or Kinkell Castle / Muirsons
Post by: rebeccareardon on Friday 05 November 21 03:43 GMT (UK)
Hi All
I have a relative, Kenneth Muirson (1821-1889) born at Kinkele Castle, Ferintosh, Rocshire. Is this hte same as Kinkell Castle near Conan Bridge, Urquhart parish, Ross and Cromarty county?
I believe his father, Daniel Muirson (1779-1848) lived here whilst a tacksman.
If anyone has any information on the correct castle and its estate, I would be really interested.

Have a look at this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/228780232#zoom=5&lat=2325&lon=12687&layers=BT  The castle is shown in tke top left hand and Newton of Ferrintosh to the east.   If you move the map a few miles to the north west is Conan and Conan Bridge.   I think the names you list are the same castle.

This link relates to the Historic Record of the castle https://her.highland.gov.uk/monument/MHG9028

There is a book on the castle -
Kinkell, The Reconstruction Of A Scottish Castle - Gerald Laing

Thank you Kay. That explains where Ferintosh fits in.

Hi Rebecca

It is Kinkell Castle and you are related to me.!!!   Kenneth was the 7th son of Thomas & Jean (Jane) Christian Mackenzie   7. Kenneth b. 1821  born 16th March  @ Urquhart and Logie Wester(d. 21 Aug 1889 in Moree, New South Wales, Australia)  fourth son of the late Thomas Muirson, Esq, Architect of  Kenkell Castle,  Ross-shire,   Jean (Jane)Christian Mackenzie  was one of three illegitimate children of Sir Hector Mackenzie 4th Baronet of Gairloch.  Thomas & Jane's 6th child Francis Alexander Mackenzie Muirson was my 3 x Great grandfather.  I have lots of other information to share. I have not come across Daniel Muirson.  Thomas & Jane both died at Kinkell Castle and they  lived there in their later life. They also had one or two other children born at Kinkell Castle and I was told by a lady from another Facebook group that he was a Tacksman at Kinkell Castle (probably for Sir Hector MacKenzie's) but she did not tell me where she got the information from!! Thomas's original occupation was "Builder/ Architect & Mason" I have lots more info on that.  We have a "Muirson & Associated Families" Facebook page which you are welcome to join.(we are all in Australia & New Zealand, can't seem to track any down in Scotland!)  I also have a spreadsheet on Thomas & Jane and their descendants which I can send to you. There seem to be lots of branches of the Muirson's in Scotland and some of them ended up in USA, but the problem is joining the dots together.  What part of the world are you in?  I am in Tauranga, New Zealand.   I would love to hear from you.  Regards, Kaye Muirson
