Title: John Elliott Brighton
Post by: Suzy100 on Sunday 14 November 21 20:50 GMT (UK)
Dinah Dean was born abt 1826 in Beeding Sussex.  In 1841 she is a servant.  I cannot find her in 1851.  In 1854 she has a daughter Katherine Jane Elliott, father John Elliott a Coppersmith.  Mother Dinah was the informant, from Fishergate Southwick.  In 1861 census (C)Katherine and Dinah are living Brighton and she is listed as Widowed, I believe as it is not clear.  In 1862 Dinah marries a George Lawson. Her Father stated as Thomas Dean.  Katherine marries Frederick William Hill in 1872 and she states father John Elliott deceased occ Brazier.

I cannot find a John Elliott anywhere, there is no obvious birth and no John Elliott on the 1841 or 1851 census stating occupation as a Coppersmith or a Brazier.  Also there are no deaths that apply to him, I have looked on the GRO and the ages do not add up.  I have searched the census's on the Genealogist and cannot find him.

Any help finding a John Elliott would be appreciated.

Many thanks

This is great Jo, and looks like the right one however on her second marriage to George LAwson it states her father is Thomas Dean not William.
Also how would she have been in Kent when she was born in Brighton.  Unless she worked there as a servant in 1851, but I cannot find her in the census for that year.

I just assumed he came from Brighton but have not detail on him at all, apart from his occupation.

This was the first marriage to John Elliott second marriage is to George Lawson.  But I will order the marriage certificate I think.

Yes CaroleW I did and think I replied.  I am not sure if this is the one as Dinah father was Thomas as stated when she married her second husband George Lawson,  not William.
I still cannot find her in any 1951 census's either. :)

Only a death of a John Elliott to to consider
John was 21 when he married in 1851 so approx 24 c 1853. Brighton was known as Brighthelmston in the nineteenth century. I know Katharine Jane's birth was registered mq 1854 but it is possible she was born some time in the dq 1853

Death

GRO Reference: 1853  M Quarter in BRIGHTHELMSTON  Volume 02B  Page 149 aged 24

There are also some newspaper reports on (FindMyPast) in March 1853 that I cannot access re the deaths of 3 men at the Brighton terminus, one being a John Elliott.

John

These articles refer to a John Elliott, a fireman on the train, all three who died were said to be single.

John could possibly have died sometime after 1859……. there is birth of an Annie Louisa Elliott, mmn Dean, GRO 1859 Brighton, 4qtr, vol 02B, page 198, her death appears to be registered same place in 1860. I can’t see a baptism but would suggest accessing her birth details to see if she is a sibling of Katherine Jane?

As to marriage record, is it possible that the priest transposed the father’s names? Maybe William is John’s father name?
