Title: Marriage certificate witnesses
Post by: yecartmannew on Thursday 18 November 21 18:12 GMT (UK)
Hi

Wondering if anyone can help.

Witness name of Henry Mantell (definite, he is the bride's father) after that is another name I think that may be Dorothy ? ?
Then 2nd witness name Marie Mantell (wife of above) then maybe Margaret ?

Was it normal to have 4 witnesses?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like Dorothy Eveline Porter (or Carter) and Margaret Wood to me.

Personally, I have never known there to be 4 witnesses before.

I thought Carter and possibly Margaret Lord but yes it could be Wood.

I've written

Dorothy Eveline Carter

Margaret Wood

without seeing the other posts.

I've seen a few of 4 or more witnesses. One of my relatives had 6 witness - her father and siblings! It was a Birmingham marriage in the 1890s  :)

It could be Dorothy Eveline Curtis.

ADDED - is the 1939 Register any help?

Thanks everyone.   Maybe it's a regional thing then to have multiple witnesses.

I've done some transcriptions for FreeReg (mainly for Northumberland) and its not as rare as you would think to have multiple witnesses. I've seen 4, 5, 6 reasonably often, though 2 is by far the norm.
