George Cassell was born in 1875 and married Rose Inness 6 Aug 1903 at the Wesleyan church, Lucknow, India. His father's name was Emmanuel Cassell, and Rose's father, John Inness.
At the time of the marriage, George was 28, Rose was 18. This info taken from their MC now held at the British Library.
From the MC he said he was a Private with the IInd Battalion, East Surrey - hence my belief he was born and baptized somewhere in East Surrey.
Looking for information of the family. Not found in 1901 or 1911 Census that I could see; and no sign of Rose or her father John.
As always, your help is much appreciated.

Just in case this helps - his sister is listed as 25 Fairfield Place Kingston on the Army Records and this couple were living there in 1901. I noticed that Ellen was also born in Kingston - possible sister :-\ I can't see a marriage for the couple

In 1891 610/25
Elizabeth Hilton, widow and 7 children are at the address 25 Fairfield Place - the two youngest children, 3 yrs and 1 yr were born Kingston, the other Windsor.

FindMyPast has 2 records for George Casell
The earlier attestation, 4th Bat East Surrey Regt, No 7249, 7 Mar 1893 includes -
Current address - 4, Young's Buildings, Eden Street and last 12 months 25, Mill Street, Kingston.
Occpn - bricklayer's labourer

Trying to decide if George Casell, attested 1893 (twice) is the George Casell that attested 1889, No 2880 (transcribed as 28800 by FindMyPast), born Clewer near Windsor.
There is a Clewer baptism for a Henry George Castle, 7 Sep 1873, abode Clewer, parents Henry and Elizabeth.
All a bit tenuous
-
They both spelt their first name as Gorge and surname as Casell and this physcial description is similiar :)

Checked again - his early 1893 attestation mentions the 3rd Royal Berks!!
-
Yes - I think it's the same person. I wonder if he changes his birthplace based on his home at the time? :-\

Interesting that the person living at 25 Fairfield Place in 1891 (the address of George's sister ) was born in Windsor close Clewer! Maybe just a coincidence :-\

Henry G Castle is still at home in 1901 1170/129/ 27 with parents Henry and Adelaide E (could that be Elizabeth?)

Elizabeth Hilton, widow and 7 children are at the address 25 Fairfield Place - the two youngest children, 3 yrs and 1 yr were born Kingston, the other Windsor.
Kay
Elizabeth Hilton’s husband was Emanuel Hilton in 1881 1324 /53/10
The children look to have mother’s name Brown.
-
George gives his previous address as "25 Mill Street, Kingston" in his April 1893 attestation. "Fairfield Place" runs off Mill Street.
Think we can rule out the Clewer baptism.

And Emanuel's birthplace was Kingston, Surrey :-\
-
An Emanuel Hilton was in trouble with the authorities in Jun 1881 and Feb 1882 for deserting his wife and six children, leaving them chargeable to the Windsor Union. Mrs Hilton had discharged herself from the workhouse early Feb 1882 and Emanuel was sentenced to 2 mths imprisonment.
-
Surrey electoral registers have Emanuel Hilton at 25 Fairfield Place in 1890.
-
There's a lengthy article in the Windsor and Eton Express, 27 Apr 1878 where Mrs Hilton describes herself as "married 15 years", the address was "Park Row, Spital".
An Emanuel Hilton married Elizabeth Brown, Dec Qtr 1868, Windsor, 2c 852

This is just a thought but
Emanuel Hilton
Baptism 23 Jun 1844 Long Ditton, St Mary, Surrey,
Mother: Jane Ellinor Hilton
Then I think Jane Eleanor Hilton marries a James Castle a widower on 5 Oct 1850 at St Mary, Hadlow, Kent and Emanuel was living with the couple in 1851 in Cowley, Kingston
Thomas Castle 38 b Bucks
Jane Castle 26 b Kent
Emanuel Castle 7 b Surrey

Looking good - a step closer :)
Where does George b 1874/5 fit in, I wonder?
I had been thinking he could be illegitimate and Emmanuel Hilton was the father :-\

I thought that but also wonder if one of Emanuel and Elizabeth's children changed his name as he names his mother as Elizabeth :-\
-
I have been wondering if he changed his name completely - he had a tough upbringing from the newspaper reports.
In 1881 we have an Emanuel Hilton, 9 and Joseph Hilton 7 - both born Windsor. Trying to find them in '91.

I can see Joseph in 1901 I think but not Emanuel post 1881

A Joseph Hilton attested for the 3rd Bat Royal West Surry regt, 30 Sep 1892, No 6984, age 18yrs 6 mths, born Kingston, labourer.
Address 2, Hope Avenue.
Puzzled by the naming of George Albert Hilton, born 1883, Jun Qtr 1883, Windsor - mother Brown.
George attesting in 1893 states "mother, Bristol" but Elizabeth can be found in Fairfield Place in 1891 and 1901 - all very frustrating.
-
On the first 1889 attestion for George Casell at the time he was 17 yrs 11 months on 15 Oct 1889 (although he was younger in the two later attestations).
If my maths is OK that puts him as born in Nov 1871 which would match with Emanuel Hilton's birth record He's my best suggestion re George
Births Dec 1871
Emanuel Hilton Windsor 2c 417

I think George Albert is with Elizabeth and family in 1891. Can't explain why it is mother Bristol though - it looks like it was added at a later date? :-\
-
My money also is on Emanuel, 1871. The newspaper reports paint a very sad story of the hardships the family suffered. I wondered if he wanted to disassociate himself from his father's name? As usual, all very speculative.
Why are both Emanuel and Joseph so elusive in 1891?
-
There is an Edward Hilton, 19yrs b Windsor, Berks at Farnborough North Camp, Farnborough. He is a Private in the Light Infantry (I think).

Thank you all for this most helpful research.
You have uncovered George's move to India and his parentage, which is great.
Would mind checking out Rose Inness, please?
Here is a snip from a family photo taken in India (unknown date). The three children of Rose (left) and George (right) are not shown, but are Anglo-Indian. They are holding their two grandchildren.
I am checking to see if Rose was herself Anglo-Indian married George 6 Aug 1903.
How do we go about clarifying Rose's heritage, please?
Thank you
David

Hello David
Does the MC give any occupation for Rose's father John?? Could he also have been in the Army?
Kay
-
George CASSELL marr. Rose INNESS 6 Aug 1903, Wesleyan church, Lucknow, India.
What names do you see for witnesses?
-
No occupation given.
Witnesses are: Henry Hargreaves (maybe something else) and William Smith - but no occupations.
Roses' father was John Inness.
Going through FIBIS I found a John Innes married Jeanie Learmont, and John Innes could have had a father W Innes 1757-1816, who died at Dyrham, Somerset.
It's all rather garbled and uncertain from the few hits via FIBIS.
-
The top witness looks like Henry Gardener

Thank you very much.
Ive checked FindMyPast and Ancestry, there is very little re Rose Inness but there are some others named Rose or Inness who might be related (by a long shot).
Capt W Inness 1757-1816 is to be found via FIBIS, a surgeon. He married Isabelle Rawstorne in 1799, born to Major General Edward Rawstorne.
But proving these links seems to me to be pretty tenuous.
I was interested that the births of the children at that early date were recorded euphemistically (?) as "The lady of General was delivered of a son/daughter."

Hi emmanuel 1844 is my x great grand fathers half brother, they share the same mother jane hilton, can anyone tell me where the stories are about the hiltons, also we have a dna match with a person with george cassell and rose innes in their tree so it was very interesting to read all the above. its the right family as all the places and addresses are correct.
