Title: McMULLEN family
Post by: daisynook on Thursday 30 December 21 12:02 GMT (UK)
I have been researching this family for a while and found father James McMullen died in India in 1864 of cholera while serving in an Irish Military Unit.  I'm now trying to find more information about his son Joseph McMullen who was born in India in 1865.  He married in 1886 and his wife was then living in Yorkshire. The little information I have is that he was a Corporal of 7th Dragoon Guards in 1871 and shows him born in Ireland but I have him born in India although his mother married again immediately and came back to England and he was certainly back in Yorkshire in 1891.
Any information would be appreciated.

What was the name of Joseph's mother? If he was born in Ireland (civil registration of births started 1864) you can look for birth registration (free) which will list names of both parents, possibly father's military unit, place of birth, etc.

If mother's name was Catherine then here's a possible birth in Bengal in Dec.1864 with baptism Jan.1865-

Which leads to possible siblings (search 'mcmullen' 'india' father- 'james mcmullen' mother- 'catherine' then narrow down 9using tabs at top rather than right-hand menu) to births 1860-1869

Hi aghadowey - Yes, mother's name was Catherine Duff.  Mother married again immediately to Joseph Smith and they had two sons James and Samuel Smith.  James and Catherine married in 1851 in Dublin so there could have been children before Joseph.  The one of family search is James.

I said POSSIBLE children as with only first name of mother impossible to say she was your Catherine Duff. If Catherine came back to U.K. shortly after husband's death then the children were all probably old enough to have travelled with her. You've traced Catherine back to Dublin so next step might be to see if you can find any of those possible children (marriages listing father's name/occupation), birthplace as India in census, etc.

Thanks for the link to their marriage.  I have already started looking for any marriages with father's name.  Will let you know if I have any luck.
