Title: James Bennett, sailor.
Post by: ColC on Wednesday 05 January 22 17:36 GMT (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help finding James Bennett, I guess he was born in Ireland about 1850 or so.

His son Matthew was born in Ireland but is on the 1901 census in Ayrshire Scotland, he marries there in October 1901 and is on the 1911 census with his family in Ayrshire. According to the census returns and his subsequent death in 1940 he was born about 1879.

Matthew’s marriage cert. States his father was James Bennett, a sailor and his mother Agnes Bolton, deceased.  On Matthew's death cert his parents names are confirmed, and his fathers occupation still noted as sailor. Both are now deceased.

Thanks in anticipation.

Colin

This looks quite favourable for Matthew’s birth but mother’s name not quite correct. She is named Annie Bunting.  :-\

Thank you so much, you have solved two issues with this family. Matthew had a daughter in 1908,
Agnes Bunting Bennett. I wondered where her middle name came from, as the name on the two certs for Matthew clearly show Agnes Bolton, however maybe his mother died when he was very young, she was certainly deceased by the time he was 22.

The marriage certainly looks to be the one, thank you once again.

Death of James Bennett, sailor, in Donaghadee in 1915. Age isn’t quite right but seems to fit otherwise.

Agnes’ death 1899:

Occupation in 1911 is labourer, not seaman, but that apart the address and age and marital status appear to fit the James married to Agnes Bunting.

Brothers John & James Bennett in 1901 census, in Hunter’s Lane, Donaghadee. Presumably their father was at sea on census night?

Many thanks for the additional information Elwyn & Wexflyer.
I had checked the 1901/1911 census I had insufficient knowledge at the time, your posts have helped a lot.
