Title: LPWR
Post by: dsjturner on Thursday 06 January 22 21:08 GMT (UK)
Hi all!

I’ve been looking at my great grandfathers entry in the 1921 census and his occupation is listed as a general labourer with the employer listed as LPWR. Would anyone have any idea who they are? I’ve had a look and found nothing. His daughter once told me he worked on the railways so it could possibly be that. Many thanks in advance

They were living in reading at the time.

Is it definitely LPWR,
could it be LNWR, London & North Western Railway

Oh it could be thank you! I’ve only viewed the transcript and I’ve noticed quite a few mistakes so far so maybe that’s what it is! Thank you very much!

As well as the south eastern railway the LSWR also had running rights through reading (southern) station and a locomotive servicing base.

To the best of my knowledge the LNWR had no connection with reading.

BUT remember this. Reading was and is only 36 miles from London, certainly less than an hour commute even in 1921. Though I thought the second company at Reading was the LSWR I am not going to argue that particular point. The proximity to Euston station from Paddington by London underground suggests to me that he may well have worked there and commuted every day. Rail workers are quite notorious for it. The train crews at Kings Cross largely commute in from as far as Peterborough, Southend and Cambridge. When I worked there (commuting daily rom Doncaster, daily round trip 312 miles!) there was even one driver who commuted daily from Bournemouth.
It would be useful to know what his job was; station staff or Booking clerk etc. would make the commute easier. Unless of course someone comes up with a provable name for LPWR.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions, I really appreciate them! I forgot to mention although it says he’s a general labourer for “LPWR” is states in brackets (out of work). I’m thinking that it was maybe LSWR and there’s been a transcribing error (I’ve found a fair few of them already!)

Never trust a transcription! Always go for the original image if available.

Yes I’ve learned that the hard way! 😩 I usually struggle with the handwriting and find the transcripts handy so I went with that. I can’t justify spending more money to look when it’s a curiosity more than anything that will help! I’ll no doubt change my mind next week though who knows!

I finally bit the bullet and downloaded the original. It states L.N.W.R (out of work). He had 6 children some born in Watford and some in Birmingham so that really makes sense why he moved around especially to those areas. His wife was the breadwinner (literally she had a bakers shop) for years so maybe they moved to reading in order for her to start a business. She is listed as a general dealer employing her eldest daughter and only herself and eldest daughter were bringing in an income.

Well that puts that one to bed! The LPWR never existed and he never commuted to Euston, thanks
