Hi
The 1921 census has thrown up a mystery
My husbands father James Brett born 1915 Wrexham is found as a boarder with the above couple at 43 WestEnd st Oldham, the current family have never heard of this couple.
It states on the census that James mother is dead, no mention of father.
On his birth certificate it states mother Ethel Brett formerly Beddowes and father William Brett, as I have never been able to find a marriage between the pair had hoped that the census would have solved this.
I don’t know if I can find further information about how long James stayed with them or anything about them
-
Can you find his parents in 1911 to trace what happened to them?
If Ethel has died before 1921 there should be a death record for her.
-
I have looked for both Ethel Beddowes/ Brett without success
They weren’t together before March 1915
-
There is an Ethel Beddoes in Wales and a William Brett around in Oldham Lancs on previous census.
As James is boarding in Oldham that might be a link.
William Brett is born 1889 bricklayers labourer at 22. What occupation is given on the birth?
-
Really which census year as I have never found them together
-
Not together, I am looking for them separately as single people.
-
Ethel was previously married to John William Beddowes
-
Oh didn't realise that was a married name sorry. How did you find that out?
So the birth for James should really show her original maiden name not Beddowes :-\
What was her birth name?
-
It doesn’t say on James birth certificate, how I found it was on William Beddowes 17/10/1913 birth certificate where it states Ethel Beddowes formerly Law possibly Low.
On William Beddowes 8/3/1915 death certificate it says Ethel Beddowes now wife of William Brett. But never found a marriage between William Brett and Ethel
-
1913 William Beddowes mmn Law registered December Quarter Oldham.
-
1908 John W Beddowes married Ethel Lowe at St Thomas Moorside Oldham.
-
Thanks that clarifies the Law/Low issue. Ethel Lowe I wonder if she reverted back to her maiden name after leaving John William Beddowes
-
Ethel Lowe
Age: 21
Birth Date:1887
Marriage Date: 11 Jan 1908
Marriage Place: St. Thomas, Moorside, Lancashire, England
Father: Abraham Lowe
Spouse: John William Beddowes
-
Is this the correct family?
Daughters Agnes born 1908 mmn Law
Alice born 1910 mmn Law?
Lived at 4 Iron Street Glodwick.
-
Yes I think so
But it’s James Brett boarding with the Kilcoyne couple that’s the enigma with mother Ethel having died in 1921 census
-
The Kilcoyne family are in West End Street in 1911.
-
Do they have anyone with surnames of Brett, Beddowes staying with them
-
Do they have anyone with surnames of Brett, Beddowes staying with them
No
-
Any Sullivans or Cahills in your family?
-
So really have hit a brick wall in trying to find out why a 6 year old was boarding with the couple
-
Do you know what happened to William Beddowes born in 1913 Oldham?
-
He died on 8/3/1915 at 8 The Walks, Brook St Wrexham from mastoid abscess and bronchitis
