Title: Finding my Grandads unmarked grave, Dublin
Post by: Suzyk on Saturday 08 January 22 12:12 GMT (UK)
Hello,

I'm trying to find where my Grandad is buried in Dublin, I've been looking for a little while now with no luck so after reading the posts on here I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction.

I know that my Grandad was from Manchester area and married my Grandmother in Dublin in March 1934 (I've attached what I can find regarding this - marriage of Susan Sheridan and
Christopher Foy), my mum was born in April 1935 but I can't even find that. They lived in the Island Bridge/Inchicore area.

My Grandad died when my mum was between 10 and 15 years old I believe (unfortunately my mum passed away when I was a child so my knowledge is pretty sparse). I know they didn't have much money when grandad died and I've been told he was in an unmarked grave as a result. I'm drawing a total blank in finding any info of his final resting place, and it probably sounds daft as I never knew him but I'd like to put flowers there on my next visit to Dublin. I found my Grandmother’s  grave a few years ago when I went (she died a year before I was born, she's buried in Esker) and I'd be happy if I could also find his.

I've just ordered a copy of the marriage certificate and my mums birth certificate in the hope it'll have my Grandads date of birth to help narrow the search down, if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to look next I'd be so grateful. Thanks in advance  :)

Hello Suzy,

Are you able to crop the image to just the part that interests you, it would really help to make the handwriting larger too ;)

Regards

Sarah

Thanks Sarah, cropped to show their entry on the page and I’ve just realised an error on my OP - they were married on 17th July 1934, not March.

Welcome to Rootschat  :) You've posted on the board for Irish resources, not queries, but I'm sure sarah will soon move this thread to the DUBLIN board.

A 1935 is too recent to be online (less than 100 years old) but it does show up in the index on Family Search (un-named, registered in Apr./June 1935 quarter Dublin North district)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F175-52K

No need to order the marriage certificate- you can view it online here (free)-

I haven't found his death record in Ireland yet- any chance he died in England?

Think this might be Christopher's death (indexed as Joy not Foy)

2 Feb.1954 age 42, "of 6 Hospital Place Islandbridge" died at St. Laurence's Hospital.

This is not Manchester, I’m afraid so may have no relevance to your search.

1911 census

This family are named in WW1 records at Fold3 (a pay site) with a Christopher Joseph born 1911.

The father died in France, 1916 - Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

You just beat me to it, heywood  ;D

I did find a Christie Foy listed in Dublin Voter's Lists (1908-1910) at 3 Maiden Row, Chapelizod (room, 1st floor, right)

Family in 1911-

Added- Christopher Foy died 1916 but little detail here-

Oh wow, you lovely lot are just brilliant! I’ve been drawing a blank on everything and you’ve given me some amazing leads to work with, thank you so much! Feeling a bit emotional right now ❤️

My Grandad was known as Christie (as was his father by the look of it), I’ve been searching Christy which explains my lack of results. Hospital place sounds like it could well be the address.

I’ve always assumed that he moved over from Manchester alone, but it now seems it was his parents choice to move to Dublin before he was born. The census in 1911 was taken a few months before his birth which explains why only Christopher Foy senior shows on there.

And to top it all I have my Grandad Christopher’s (Christie’s) date of birth so at last I can try to find where he’s buried with a date of birth to work with. Am I right in assuming there isn’t a central database I can search for unmarked graves and that I need to check each cemetery individually?

I’m blown away by how much info you’ve all provided in such little time, you’re brilliant! Thank you so much again  :-*

There is nothing in those records which point to Manchester.
From looking at a couple of trees, with very little information, a sister, Christina Foy, b 1915/6 looks to have married in Lancashire.

I looked these up earlier trying to establish an English link.

A witness to that wedding was Patrick Foy.

Possible marriage with a father Thomas

There are several Foys in the same area but wonder if this is Christopher snr’s birth?

1875 - father Thomas Foy - mother Catherine Coogan
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1875/03103/2138002.pdf

1878 - Thomas - with the same parents (transcribed as Fay)
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1878/02944/2078225.pdf

1901 census - mother Catherine with son Thomas
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Palmerstown/Saint_Laurence/1290977/

I am not sure if these are the correct family. I can’t see a birth for Frederick Hamill, the 4 yr old grandson. In 1911, Thomas Foy has a 21 yr old brother, Fredrick  :-\

There still doesn’t seem to be that English connection.

Oh my! Thank you so much, I’m astounded at how you’ve all found so much information, I’m honestly over the    moon and so grateful.
To find out after all this time that my Nan and Grandad are buried in the same cemetery is so nice - it’s a pity that they couldn’t be buried together but to know they’re in the same cemetery is definitely an unexpected and lovely revelation.
You guys are just brilliant, thank you so much x
