Title: Eric George Venn
Post by: tomm on Saturday 08 January 22 20:03 GMT (UK)

Hi
Looking for help in finding any information re; Eric George Venn. Who was my friends father. I have found his birth on the GRO.but there is no mothers name given.

He was born in Bromley Kent on the 20/3/1918 and passed away in Henley on Thames Oxfordshire
on 19/1/1998.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Tomm

Have you attempted to locate him I  1921 & 1939?

There is also an entry seemingly for him on Ancestry family trees

Tomm -- when no mother's maiden name is shown on the General Register Office Index it usually means the baby is illegitimate, hence the mother's maiden name is the same as the baby's surname.

I have looked on both the 1921 census and the 1939 register, but strangely I cannot see him. In 1939 he may well have been called up for WW2, so wouldn't appear.

You may have no alternative, but to obtain his birth certificate from the General Register Office.

https://www.gro.gov.uk

If you have never ordered one before - you will need to register. You can search the birth registers on that site - select the correct birth and order a PDF copy, which is cheaper.

Hi Pennines

Thanks for your help and advice and will ask his daughter if she would like to order a B C for her
father.

Kind regards

Whilst it does not answer your original post there is an interesting newspaper article dated 22nd December 1947 about Eric George Venn leaving the fire service. He was aged 29 and had been discharged 7 years earlier from the army due to medical reasons.

Good find John!

Tomm - if your friend does decide to purchase the birth cert and obtain a pdf copy, rather than a paper one - it will be £7 -- and it contains exactly the same info as a paper copy.

When it is ready to view you will receive an email from GRO and you go to the GRO site to view it. You can then print it from there.

Obtaining the birth cert is the only way of finding his mother's name with certainty and where he was born.

Be careful of the 1939 info given on the tree on Ancestry - different person surname Fenn - not Venn ::)

My sincere thanks to Carole W Pennnines and John Hood

We will order a PDF and my friend is amazed that John found the newspaper report about her father.
Thank you Carole for pointing out the 1939 Fenn record.

Kind regards
Tomm

Hi Tomm

Just bear this marriage in mind for when you find his mothers christian name but ask your friend if the surname Tulett rings any bells

There is a marriage in 1922 in Bromley between Elizabeth A Venn & Henry J Tulett - 3 children born between 1923 - 1929

If it does turn out to be Elizabeth - there is possible emigration involved

Hello Carole

It's rather strange that you have come up with this info.
As my friend has always said that her fathers mother was a Venn.
Until his mothers dying day she would never reveal who his father was!
Hence the unknown father!

Thank you and I will pass this on.

Many thanks Carole

Regards
Tomm

That sounds as though his mothers name was known?

I doubt you will find his father other than by DNA

CaroleW

Is this possibly Henry John Tulett death.

TULLETT, HENRY  JOHN     48
GRO Reference: 1946  M Quarter in BRIGHTON  Volume 02B  Page 351

It would appear he was a naval man, appears on 1939  immigration record in Liverpool as H J Tulett, going to Palmerston Road. This is where Elizabeth was in 1939 war register.

Hi John

From the wording of the reply above I get the feeling that mothers christian name may already be known but need confirmation from Tomm

As Eric John was born before the end of WW1, I wonder if the father was in the Military - a sailor or a soldier?

Apart from DNA (as Carole has suggested) - unless an affiliation order was taken out (which I doubt at that time) - it might not be possible to identify the father. I imagine there may have been many ladies left in the same situation as Eric's mother - but I am pre-empting things by saying that. The people were living through a dreadful time then.

Carole W Pennines and John Hood.

Your thoughts please

I have been sent a copy of a death cert issued to Eric George Venn. As I understand it, concerning his mother.

Issued in Cleveland Middlesborough on the eighth of April 1982.

Evelyn Louisa Robinson.  and in a box it states Maiden name of woman who has married. Venn.

It would appear that she married a coal merchant. John George Robinson.

From freebmd - Evelyn's parents

Marriages June qtr 1893
Denton    Louisa Mary  Bromley    2a   786
Venn    Arthur Cornelius

However - none of this info helps in determining his fathers name

He appears to already have known his mothers name etc so you are left with DNA to determine who his father was
