Title: Missing Rowland family members- help required
Post by: NooshieW on Friday 21 January 22 23:32 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I cannot find two individuals from the same family. One is Edward Rowland born December 1919, parents William and Lilian Rowland nee Gould -Brighton.
The other is Lilian Joan Tapner born 1920 in Brighton- parents Emily Rowland and John Joseph Tapner.
I have Edward on the 1939 register, but cannot find his birth registration or any subsequent records.
I only have Lilians birth reg. Her parents divorced and lived latterly in Wandsworth.
Any help would be great. Thanks.
NB The two missing people are Uncle and niece

Re Lilian - when did her parents divorce?  Did her mother remarry?  Could she have taken her stepfathers surname?

There is a 1939 Battersea marriage of Joan L. Tapner  to Samuel Scammell
She can then be found with a birth of 17 Oct 1920.

Re Edward

If he was b Dec 1919 & was their son - he will be on the 1921 census.  I have a feeling he may have been their grandson

Their last child as at 1911 was b 1903/04

Hi, thanks so far. Emily Tapner, Lilian Joan’s mother ,remarried twice more to a Loosemore and a Flockhart. I tried the Loosemore option as this was the first of the marriages. Thanks for the Joan L Tapner version, I didn’t think to transpose the names.
As for Edward , the parents William and Lillian, lost their only son also William, in WW1 in 1918, he was unmarried. As far as I know Lilian Joan was the only grandchild, hence I believe that Edward is a son, albeit a late one.

Did you look at the 1911 for William & Lilian - they had 2 daughters - both of whom would have been old enough to have had a child in 1919 - married or not

When did William & Lily/Lilian marry?

The 1921 for William has been transcribed as ROULAND
Hovering I can see Lily and Lily Mary.

If Edward was their son he would be with his parents.

I initially only had the three children for William and Lilian , Emily, Lilian and William. Edward appeared on the 1939. I haven’t found any children for the daughters apart from Lilian Joan Tapner. There is no birth reg for an Edward Rowland, so who is he?
Thanks for ongoing help with this.

As there is no birth reg. for an Edward Rowland born 20/12/1919, nor any likely death entry, I would agree that Edward was not a son - either an 'adopted' son (which wasn't a formal arrangement when he was born) who could have reverted back to his birth name later, who knows.   He certainly wasn't with them in 1921 when he'd have been a toddler nor was there anyone with that name/age in Sussex.

Whoever Edward was, I doubt very much that he was born a Rowland!

You could be right, that they took in a child in or maybe he’s just a lodger and the enumerator got it wrong. As they lost their only son in 1918, it seemed that maybe they’d had a child . The mother would have been in her late forties, not unheard of by any means, but he  isn’t on any records.

I looked at the 1939 record again and the birth date of Edward could be 26/12/19. If it is, there is an Edward Scannel who dies in Brighton with that birthdate and there is no birth reg for him, just a thought. This is very similar to the ‘Scammel’ that Lilian Joan married. Maybe clutching at straws.
