Hi Lyn, and welcome to RootsChat :)

Papers Past show that he was a master stevedore of Port Chalmers and lived in Magnetic Street in 1878. I can't find an arrival so far.

He was a Crimean War veteran (not a soldier as suggested by this very comprehensive website, which answers many genealogical questions except the one specifically posed by Lyn, more likely served in the Royal Navy)

Earliest date I can find for him is 1863, with a likely marriage to Elizabeth McLaren REID.

Hi Lyn,

If you haven't already done so I suggest that you contact the Port Chalmers Museum and ask them for any information they have on Edward WIGNALL. They also have an excellent database known as 'Port Cahlmers Early People'.

I would also suggest Toitu Dunedin Early Settlers Museum and Dunedin Public Library, both of which hold a wealth of information about early Dunedin and it's population.

I wonder if finding the vessel he arrived on is a challenge because he arrived as crew, not a passenger.

Hi Lyn,

The Flickr webpage carries a mention of a vessel he served on, the SANS PAREIL. She was a Royal Navy two-deck third-rate battleship launched in 1851.

Here is a link to HMS SANS PAREIL's operational history which might help you place Edward in the contexts of place and time.

I am  not connected to Edward Wignall, but I am interested in the HMS Sans Pareil.

I could not find any actual link although Spades has mentioned one in his post.

Here is one that I have used in recent times:  https://www.pdavis.nl/ShowShip.php?id=39

Hi Lyn,

You might be able to find Edward's (presumed) Royal Navy personnel record by searching the UK National Archives website.

Hello Lyn ... and welcome.   :)

The following article, gives some more information for your Edward WIGNALL.

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD19070704.2.24

   ~  Lu

Added :  His name hasn't highlighted in the article, but scroll down to paragraph 4 to find him.
The notes say he arrived "September last" (43 years ago), so count back from the year 1906 (as the article is dated July 1907).  1906 minus 43 = 1863.

Added 2.  --  The article referred to above has some similarity to an article in "Otago Witness" 17 July 1907 - page 16,  for which Spades included a link at Reply # 1 here.  Use the reference ' (9) ' which the researcher has given, to go directly to the newspaper page.

Hello again Lyn

Not sure if you are familiar at all with the subscription website -- Ancestry.com  ?
Looks like there are some 20 plus "family trees" for your Edward WIGNALL at that particular site.
We do however always advise treating the information which is posted to these "trees", with caution, as some of it can be based on speculation rather than fact.   ;)

Some of the public libraries in NZ have an Ancestry Library edition available which is free to search, otherwise a subscription ($$) is needed, to be able to contact persons who have published their "trees" on the site.   But maybe someone might just spot your request here and be willing to share their findings with you.

A link to the catalogue entry to the logbooks March 1852-June 1863 of HMS SANS PAREIL.

Logbooks of HM Ships are primarily navigational records but may contain snippets of information concerning individual Seamen.

Hi Lyn,

Edward Wignall was also my great great grandfather.  However, I don't have a lot of info on him, except for names/dates of his descendents.
