Hi there,
My ancestor was Ann Affleck (1864-1927) who married George Aitkenhead in Ontario, Canada. George wrote a diary, and mentioned her brother Willie who served in a highland regiment for 12 years and recived a discharge, George found him a job in Canada, but didn't stick with it and possibly moved back to Scotland. Is there any way to find out more about him? Thanks, this is what I have.

I've seen that- George said that he knew of another brother but never met him. John was in 1871 and registered his mothers d/c but I can't trace him after that.

His military attestation is on line for 3 July 1884 to Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
He is 22 a farm servant at Barr nr Girivan for 3 years
5ft 6 3/4 tall ,blue eyes ,fresh complexion brown hair 131 lbs Presbyterian.
Deserted for 3 days in 1885 8th to 10th July
Education while in the Army fourth class to June 1885.
31 Jan 1890 sent to Hong Kong secondary syphilis recommended for discharge
Feb and he has ahernis on right side.
27 May 1890 discharged. -his medical is a long list of complaints.
It looks like he has had an awful time.
In 1881 he was a servant to a Gilbert Kennedy farmer at Barr at Balliemorie
12 May 1887 he arrives in US on the State of Nebraska from Glasgow .

Death, 29 April 1905, Wigtownshire Poorhouse, Stranraer. Labourer, aged 44, mother Ann Affleck, no father listed. I'll send you a copy of the certificate.
Never believe a tree on Ancestry.
I thought it was odd that he supposedly arrived in NY in 1887 but was still under Army medical treatment in 1890.
Also that the erroneous Ancestry tree had him dying in Nebraska and ciderdrinker's information had him arriving on board a ship called Nebraska the same year.

Yes you're right that passenger list can't be right because we the Army record is definitely him and he's still in the Army till 1890.
So yes not him.
The service record is on Fold 3 for Ancestry and FindMyPast ,both pay to view .But FindMyPast may be free at your nearest Library.We're not supposed to pass on subscription stuff.I'm not just being mean.
It's nice to know he did make it home to Mom

His diseases in 1890 are secondary syphilis, specific cachexia, hemiparesis right side of face and body.

William Affleck's military papers list his next of kin as John Coulter, brother, Dumbarton, and Annie, sister, in America.
John Coulter, illegitimate, aged 39, parents John Coulter and Ann Affleck, died in the City Poorhouse, Glasgow, on 19 September 1898.

Commonly said in Ayrshire that Affleck is an alternative name for Auchinleck.
There is a mining town in east Ayrshire named Auchinleck after the Estate of the landed Gentry, the Boswells.
Think of Claude Auchinleck, famous soldier and an Irish connection with the Talbot family ( talbot = a big white dug) and the local football team is called Auchinleck Talbot, arguably the best at their level in Scotland.
Also the famous Boxer / Actor Rab Affleck from nearby Irvine.

G F Black's The Surnames of Scotland says that the suname Affleck is of twofold origin (1) from the barony of Auchinleck in Ayrshire, and (2) from Affleck in Angus.
As trekcuber's Ann Affleck was from Ayrshire, it is reasonable to suppose that she was from the first.

Ann also had a sister, Grace, didn't she? Born on 12 September 1866 in Ballantrae. She is not on the 1871 census and can't see a death for her so far.

Grace Affleck, aged 14 months, daughter of Anne Affleck, died in Ballantrae on 18 November 1867. The SP deaths index gives her age as 2 years and doesn't include her mother's maiden suranme - a very annoying practice of SP when the deceased is illegitimate.

Maybe whoever done the indexing assumed if the mother was unmarried the surname shouldn't be included?
It might be worth inquiring as often things we complain about haven't been picked up on until it's brought to their attention (hopefully) :-\
Even if it was the case of not being indexed it might give them 'food for thought' as there's more chance of someone buying the cert. when they're pretty sure of the connection than buying it if they're unsure?

It seems to be SP's policy to omit the mother's maiden surname if she only had a maiden surname.
