Title: British Newspaper Archive - offer of free access?
Post by: KitCarson on Friday 08 April 22 16:50 BST (UK)
I no longer subscribe to Find my Past which I understand had some access to BNA?  On a recent post someone mentioned I could access 3 free searches.  I downloaded 2 yesterday and I've had emails from them initially saying I still had 1 more free search.

I've now received an email from them saying I have free access on the Community Edition?

Clicking on various links I've found:

"Why do I have free access?
This library has subscribed to The British Newspaper Archive - Community Edition.

While you are within this library/authority premises, you will have unlimited access to the millions of scanned pages of newspapers that the British Newspaper Archive site holds.

To view pages from the archive, you'll need to register (for free) and be signed in to the service.

All the articles you view will be kept in your Saved area – it’s your personal area in which to store and organise your favourite articles. Here you can create folders for different articles and categorise them however you like – the beauty of "Saved" is that you can make it whatever you want. You can also add notes to any of your articles to record your thoughts and track your progress.

Please see our Getting Started page for useful advice on searching.

We hope you enjoy searching The Archive.
The British Newspaper Archive team"

Anyone else access free access this way?  They don't have my financial details so can't charge me for searching.  I'm just a bit suspicious as I know other people pay a subscription?

EDIT: when it says 'this Library' I have not joined a library and they don't mention what that is.  I subscribe to National Records but only free access mainly for their maps.

cheers, Kit

I was given this link by a friend a while ago for free newspaper access.  It sounds as if it's the same place you're talking about.  I'd assumed it was just a free site available to everyone.  I've never used Find My Past.

EDIT - I've just added up the number of free searches I've done and it's 9.

There is a free to view section for newspapers on Findmypast, but I think it is fairly limited. I had noticed it was there, but never explored it, as I have a subscription. It seems to be mainly some local newspapers and small specialist publications, though I haven't looked in great detail.

Thanks to both Pandacub and TOTH.

I may then see what is available in the areas I'm interested in a go on from there.

I should explore the cost of a full subscription to BNA as opposed to what FindMyPast and this new offer provide.  If anyone has any thoughts, I'd be interested in your knowledge.

It depends how much you would use the rest of Findmypast.  I find the BNA search more intuitive and sometimes use that to locate something on FindMyPast to which I subscribe. If you would use FindMyPast for other records, I would stick with them. FindMyPast are the digitisers of the papers for BNA so you shouldn’t find any difference in the papers held by both.

It says in the Terms and Conditions:

>> Searching the site is free, but to view the newspapers you have to pay a fee <<

I wonder what use that is, to be able to search but not see the results.

You get several lines of each result so that you can see if it's worth persuing further. If it's something short, like a BMD notice, you may have all you need anyway :)

Go into a newsagents and the headlines of the newspapers are freely on view, but would you expect to walk out with the paper of your choice without paying for it?

Thanks to all those who have provided insight/comment.  Very much appreciated.  I don't want things for 'free' just it was being sold to me as 'free'.  However, that has limitations, as has been explained.

I will think about how much I'm likely to use Newspapers and see whether to sign up to BNA or link it again with FindMyPast sub, which might be more cost effective.

I have certainly appreciated the advice to get the 2 articles on the 'free' access and for that, I'm very grateful.

RootsChatters - you are fantastic and my 'Go to' site for advice.  I just love 'listening' to you all and all the sage advice and perspectives your knowledge brings.

Stay safe.  Kit

The way I use BNA is to use the search and use the bookmark feature to save found articles of interest and build up a collection.  I then subscribe for a month to review, and extract everything I need then let it lapse and repeat the process.

I also tend to start the subscription when I know I have a day or 2 when I just sit down and review it all in a single sitting, then use the rest of the month to ad-hoc search.  BNA has been a great resource for me as it helped me discover a previously unknown line in the family which we would have not known otherwise!

I found this method allows me to switch between resources and keeping subscription costs sensible but does require a bit of patience on the information you want to review!

If you do this, make sure you find the tick box to stop the auto renewal from taking place!

Before you pay, it may be worth checking the free sources such as Australia and New Zealand archives and the New York Times. UK articles got reprinted all round the world for ex-pats or just as space-fillers.

www.trove.nla.gov.au is a fantastic free resource of Australian newspapers with many news items from overseas. Worth checking out.

If you think just one month's access to BNA will be enough, sign up via TopCashBack and you'll get 75% or so cashback. I did it a few years ago, and the fiver or so it ultimately cost me was the best I ever spent.
