Title: John AAGAARD
Post by: Eyesee on Monday 11 April 22 03:16 BST (UK)
A John AAGAARD/AAGARRD married Helen DOUGHTY in 1869 at the residence of the bride's father in Rangitikei.

They had one son Mechal Casper AAGAARD born 1875 who died 1956.

Can find no trace of him after 1869, no death, no will, nothing in the electoral rolls. Nothing in the newspapers either apart from a couple of court cases prior to the marriage and the marriage notice itself. Some trees online have him born 1844 in Rangitikei but as far as I know there were no Scandinavians in the area so very unlikely. Some German families but no Scandies.

Helen died in Stratford in 1911 as a widow but was buried in Bulls with her DOUGHTY family. She had a son in 1867 before she was married called Henry. He died in Bulls in 1902. Helen's mother Mary DOUGHTY's will of 1900 mentions Helen as a widow.

Has anyone come across John anywhere? Hoping some fresh eyes can assist.

Thanks.
Ian C

in the 1868 court report there is also M.AAGAARD.

Is he a brother?
there is a Michael AAGAARD who is a trooper in the Patea Yeoman Cavalry  in the NZ War Medal application list of 1871

Cannot see him later either

I am getting fanciful now, but there is this grave in Florida

Makes you wonder if they both went off to America

Could be or some relation, as there is a mention to Henry Doughty for Signatories, Bulls, Wanganui.

I don't know how common the name is. There are mentions of a John AAGAARD in Australia - letters in 1877, unclaimed letters in Sydney 1881, and died in 1899.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article232916533 - 1877
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article221680256 - 1881

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article237201128 - funeral notice 1899, doesn't mention a wife.
Presumably this death Sydney (8415/1899 ), father's name Christian.

The headstone for the John AAGAARD who died Sydney 1899 says born "Vardallens [?] Norway, 11 Nov 1831".
Possibly not your man if the marriage notice is correct in saying he is of "Copenhagen, Denmark".

Thanks everyone but this can now be closed.

I was looking for John/Johan in trees when I should have been looking for Mechal Casper the son. Found a couple of trees that had him born in Denmark, so looks like Johan took Helen back home with him. There was an older daughter Charlotte born 1873 but she died in 1876.

Helen has then come back to NZ bringing her son with her. Johan stayed in Denmark and had another family there, died in 1908.

The M in NZ was probably Johan's brother also call Mechal Casper.

The trees had Danish census info as well as links to other official records. Did not have any connections to any of the DOUGHTY ones.

Thanks
