I had the wrong parents for Agnes
So am starting again .
place of baptism is not likely to be Southend Argyll if
birth place is Busby
as stated on censuse when she is Mrs Agnes MacDermid (various spellings )in
1901 1891 1871
1861 gives Mearns Renfrew ..I've checked map and still in right area
1851 gives Pollockshaw ...in Eastwood Renfrew
If she is single female servant to Mrs William WALKER in Glasgow 1841 born Scotland
(the Walkers are b Lanarkshire)
She married Duncan MacDermid in 1851
In Eastwood
They subsequently lived in Pollockshaw and old monkland Lanarkshire .
They had sons Duncan 1854-1855
Walter 1857
Duncan 1859
Malcolm 1861 #
.john 1864
Alexander 1866
Maybe other babies who died
So I thought I'd found correct father with second son named Walter .
BUT timber merchant Walter McFarlane of Dumbarton doesn't match ; his daughter emigrated to USA and married Robert greenlees
Any other candidates ?

I've found this Walter married to Margaret Machan
Son b 1827 Busby
-
Duncan McDermid, baptised 2/11/1854, Eastwood, to parents Duncan McDermid & Agnes McFarlane
-
In 1861, They are under McDiarmid & are in Old Monklands, Lanarkshire.
Duncan, 30, Agnes, 32, Walter, 4 & Duncan, 1.
-
Duncan & Agnes married Eastwood, 22/6/1850, still using McDiarmid spelling
-
Agnes, 15, is with her parents, Walter, 35, & Margaret, 35, siblings: Martha, 15, Margaret, 10, John, 10, Jean, 9, Christian, 5, & Mary, 2. in the Gorbals, Glasgow, 1841 census.
John, Christian & Mary's baptisms are recorded in Mearns although none of the others are including Agnes.
Parents Walter McFarlane & Margaret Machan

Thanks so much kloumaran I had all information after her marriage but none before . Except the possible 1841
I.ll check this out
Just used all my credits on SP so hope some of the records are on ancestry

I think Walter died in Glasgow, 16/4/1847, age 40
-
I'm on a roll with this family
Looking at Agnes MCFARLANE s sisters
4 of them are together in 1861 born Busby Mearns
all are working tho ancestry hasn't managed to transcribe the jobs
Margaret is the head some kind of weaver
Christian /Christina age 25 * Mary 20 a farmers ? Maker
The youngest is Elizabeth 15 corless keeper ?
-
Walter is still alive 1851 book seller on Stirling street he has 2 more children with Margaret MACHAN Malcolm .b 1847 and Elizabeth
-
I'd like to find the right Margaret Machan as Agnes mother because I have a lot of DNA matches to a Machan family

John Machan & Margaret Gembel may be a possibility. Married 1792, Abbey. Records for 1 child, Elizabeth, baptised 1805, Abbey.
-
I'm fairly sure it's James MACHAN 1758 and Martha Clark 1765 lots of
DNA links to them because some descendants went to salt lake city and had several wives and lots of children
-
Reply 9 amended
B
Transcription is not good if anyone can tell me what these sisters professions were in 1861 I'd be grateful
It's likely their father had died mother Margaret may be aged 59 a live in female servant
They didn't have life easy
-
Have you considered this death for Margaret?:
MARGARET MACFARLANE/MACHAN
Age 54
Mother's maiden name CLARK
1857
644/2 477
High Church

That death is a perfect find
It's at Duke Street where the 4 girls lived in 1861
Some trees on ancestry have Walter s parents being called John several possibilities for a mother Helen Barr
Agnes aitkin
We know from family elders that Agnes had a brother called John who went to America
When some of Agnes children emigrated to USA they gave an address of a mcfarlane cousin
I.ll check records as naming pattern of John's daughters may be a clue to his grandfather's name
-
Thanks for that debate Forfaran I've not read it all but will add a comment.
It's true about the mistranscriptions and inaccuracies .
I've found trees that have copied my wrong Walter including an image which shows DNA connection to my Aunt ...not themselves
Some of my information came from an old family scroll and people's living memories but they'd still manage to mix their grandfather up with someone 20 years older .
Best solution for me is to use Scotland people for the exact documents
Other sites and rootschatters expertees when I can
And as I have subs I may as well get the basic information from ancestry first also I can see genuine relatives thru DNA ..I knew I was connected to James Machan and Martha Clark but didn't know thru which child .or on which of my grandfather's lines.now I do
And can see some lovely old photos of the relatives who emigrated and their lifestyles .

When James and Chrissy MacDermid embarked in USA 1923 they were going to stay with "friend " John MCFARLANE at 146 bradhurst av New York
This could be their great uncle son of Walter McF + Margaret MACHAN or his son if he had one
-
Klouman reply 9
Margaret GEMMELL/GEMBEL appears somewhere in my searches ..it's the same family
-
Thank you all
I wonder how many 3x ggchildren James MACHAN. Martha's son b 1788 had
with Margaret FORBES
He had at least 7 children
His daughter Margaret married her cousin Andrew Machan 1824 son of Andrew b1800
So their children have a stronger DNA link
-
The mcfarlane girls 1861
Found on SP but it is hard to read Margaret Head is a powerloom weaver
Mary & Christine are both .......? ? Makers or weavers
Goodness knows what Elizabeth age 14 does
Maybe something to do with paper like her late father
-
The 23 and 21-year-olds are Fancy Box Makers.
There's no 14-year-old in the extract but the 13-year-old may be a Cloth Lapper.
-
Thank you once again Forfaran
yes Elizabeth is listed as 13 there
I watched a program.that included fancy box makers ...hard work for little return
My MacDermid s were cloth lappers ..but I'm not convinced thats what it says
-

No. Could be house keeper.
-
Keeper is what ancestry transcribed
if second word starts with 'H it's very fancy H ...don't know what else you can be a keeper of apart from gates and lighthouses !!
Would a housekeeper .keep someone else's house or their own .their mother had died at this address 3 years before .haven't found Elizabeth or her sisters for sure on next censuses
Except unmarried Margaret in 1901 with younger brother malcolm
