I have had 2 DNA tests: Y-DNA is on MyHeritage; the results of another test (paid for by my daughter via her Ancestry account) for which we cannot find out what kind of test it was (Y-DNA, mtDNA, or autosomal) are on Ancestry. FamilyTreeDNA also have the results of one of these tests, b ut we don't know which one. Now my questions:
1) How can we find out what kind of test Ancestry did? (If we ask the chat line we just get reiterative drivel from a computer bot)
2) When we try to download the raw data, the system always takes us just so far, then the final button to click never seems to appear on the screen. How do we download the raw data?
3) How can we find out which of the two is on FamilyTreeDNA?

If it's a reasonably current test on Ancestry, it can only be autosomal. FTDNA do Y-DNA and mitochondrial but Ancestry don't.

Re - Q2. We told you how in your other post

They send you an e-mail when its ready.

FTDNA also do autosomal tests.
You can upload your raw data from Ancestry to FTDNA but not the other way around. It can get a bit confusing because even if you took a Y-dna test with FTDNA you can use the same sample to upgrade to an autosomal test, upload raw data to My Heritage etc …. Ancestry is only autosomal though. :)
How many dna tests have you taken with different companies, or have you only taken the one test and uploaded the raw data to other companies?
If you sign in to your FTDNA account you can clearly see the tests you took with them - they’re on your home page. :)

Yes, thank you for earlier attempts to guide me (and my daughter who is on Ancestry) to download my raw data, but gedmatch refuses to accept FamilyTree's, as you know. From FamilyTreeDNA I have discovered an A4 sheet with my results printed and definitely headed Y-DNA (with my name spelled as Daivd - so much for their attention to detail). This is dated August 2018, and was handled (i.e. the posting and the emails) from a friend who was going to America, as they required payment in US$ and as postage from UK was expensive. Clicking on the kit number never allows us to get as far as downloading raw data.
As I wrote earlier, we cannot download the Ancestry results, although Ancestry clearly have them, as they provide matches and a results summary with maps &c. The Ancestry test was done in November 2016, so was autosomal, and when we eventually navigate to 'download' and get the email they send to confirm the request, they immediately reply by saying the link they have just sent is invalid, so nothing comes. We have tried maybe half a dozen times, and always get only that far. If we use the 'chat line', we only get a computer bot replying irrelevantly without addressing the question how to get beyond that invalid link they keep sending.
So gedmatch won't accept FamilyTree's results as they say it is too small, and Ancestry's remain inaccessible.
In short, we are stymied, but I would like to get on to gedmatch. What might we do?

When I was checking to answer your previous request, I went to the download page on Ancestry and asked for my DNA download. I got an e-mail from them which asked me to click on download but it gave me an error/invalid message.
I did this a couple of times and nearly gave up but I then received yet another e-mail with the download message and when I clicked, it downloaded. Maybe you're getting the same problem so keep trying.
I did my DNA test with Ancestry in 2017

I wonder whether the problem could be located in the email I am using. I am using my own, but should I use my daughter's? Or maybe it is because I am using my computer, not hers.
-
It should be the e-mail and password of whoever the test is registered to.

I was gifted a DNA test, didn't sign up to subscribe to the company as i already subscribe to 2 others, I have had 2 calls to try to get me to sign up with this company, I really do not know what to do, it appears I have peopled lined up, or whatever word you want to use that are somehow related, I don't know what to do, obviously it will cost me

Wulfsige,
Most companies give step by step instructions on how to upload your raw data from one to another.
I’m completely computer illiterate but somehow managed it with numerous kits for various family members. ;D
I also managed to upload to Gedmatch as well, but it was a while ago and I can’t recall the process, but I managed to fudge it somehow. ;D
Have you tried this process:
https://sequencing.com/education-center/free-dna-upload-sites/gedmatch-dna-upload-instructions
I think I just tried a general search eg “how to upload raw data from ancestry to FTDNA” or some such vague wording.

These are the instructions from the Ancestry site.
Scroll to the Actions section (under the Test Management heading) and click Download next to Download DNA Data.
Enter your password, check the box, and click Confirm. You'll get an email containing a link to confirm the download. The downloaded file will not be in the email itself; in the email, you'll click a link that will bring you back to Ancestry.
In the email, click Download DNA Data. A download link can be used just once, and it will expire after one week. If your link has expired, start over at step 1.
The file will be downloaded to your computer. The file name will be dna-data-(date).zip. If you can’t find it, check your Downloads folder or search for the file name (if you have a PC) by clicking the Windows key User-added image on your keyboard and entering the file name in the search field that appears, or (if you have an Apple computer) by clicking the Spotlight icon User-added image in the top-right corner of your screen and entering the file name in the search field. To open the file, double-click it.

I wondered if the problems might be because someone else purchased the test for you? Did they register with their email address?
You must have been given log in numbers, kit numbers, passwords etc to access your acccount. Are you able to access your account without any issues?

Which company is the dna test with LM? I don’t think you need to take up a subscription to view your results and contact any matches.
If you want to link trees etc I think it is recommended to be a subscriber - at least I believe that is the case with Ancestry. I haven’t taken an Ancestry dna test but anyone who has will be able to help you with more information.

It should be the e-mail and password of whoever the test is registered to.
Thank you. I'll try that.

This (attached) is all I get. The other things (DNA settings; Actions; Test Management; Your DNA Tests) never appear, but we have the receipt for the Ancestry test (November 2016), plus the ethnicity estimate, matches, who the test is linked to (me), so it is obvious the test was done and the results noted deep in the counsels of Ancestry. We have used my daughter's password, username and email address. We seem to be blocked somehow.

This is where you should be in Ancestry:
Go to DNA Settings
Scroll to the Actions section (under the Test Management heading) and click Download next to Download DNA Data.
Enter your password, check the box, and click Confirm. You'll get an email containing a link to confirm the download. The downloaded file will not be in the email itself; in the email, you'll click a link that will bring you back to Ancestry.

When you say that the other things never appear, have you tried scrolling down beyond the sections you've shown above? That's where I find instruction on how to download my DNA test results

If you do not wish to subscribe to the company when you get the next telephone call it will probably be inline with what we get from most call centres in that there is the Calls Are Recorded For Training Purposes message.
I respond with:-
For the purpose of your Recording may I very specifically state that I DO NOT want to discuss subscribing to your Company.
They usually get the message and sign off.
In the case of trying to retain business after cancelling I use the term I Do Not wish to have a Retention conversation.

There is nothing else, nothing below. Here are the bottoms of the pages. There is no section called Actions" or "DNA Settings" or the other options that have been mentioned.
-
Trying again
This is the page you need to be on
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Downloading-DNA-Data
and follow the instructions given under 'Go To DNA Settings'
I previously gave the details in my reply #14
-
Thank you. But we have done that many times, to no effect. What we get is (as in the article) Scroll to the Actions section (under the Test Management heading); but there is no Actions section, and no Test Management heading, and if I follow the arrow by my name, it simply takes me to the attachment I showed earlier; if I click on my daughter's name, it tells us we are not related or one of us hasn't taken a test. There is never Actions, nor Test Management.

Try this
https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Requesting-a-Download-of-Your-Account-Data
and scroll down until you get to Download DNA Data
Click on that.
Then click on Your DNA tests.
Then click on the test name that you want .
Then Click on Download DNA test.

What I have done now is log out entirely, and log in again using the email address they always use communicating with me, plus clicking the asterisks which hide my password. That got me back into Ancestry, and I again followed the steps that are outlined in the instructions you pointed me to. This time the Test Management and Actions options appeared, and I now have a .txt file of 17.2 MB. This is looking hopeful, and I shall now attempt to upload it to gedmatch, plus preserve it inviolable in some safe 'saved' place.
Whether gedmatch will accept it this time, or say it is still too small, remains to be seen. (I dare say the previous too small one was downloaded from FamilyTreeDNA.) Watch this spot!
Thank you all so far.
-
It should be a zip file not a txt file :-\

It should be a zip file not a txt file :-\
Thanks. For some reason I have both, so I shall use the zip for gedmatch.
-
Well done - ya got there!
-
The next blockage is this: gedmatch wants me to supply a 'gedmatch kit number', and gives a button to click to take me where I can find it. I click, but I can see nothing in the window that opens labelled 'gedmatch kit number'. It gives a 'user profile number', but rejects that as a kit number.
-
Log in to Gedmatch to get to your homescreen.
If you then select the Menu system there is an option to Upload DNA.
Select the zip file and upload it.
-
It seems that you've not uploaded the zip file. It can sometimes take a while for Gedmatch to processit.

No - it is the zip file that I uploaded. I was very careful to do that, following the advice given on the forum here.
-
From your Gedmatch Dashboard (the page that showed your user profile number) scroll down to DNA Resources
It will show a number, your name and a shield with police on it and a pencil with a red end.
The number is your kit number (probably 1 or 2 letters followed by 6 or 7 numbers my first kit was 1 letter and 5 numbers, my latest 2 letters and 7 numbers).
If you have uploaded a Gedcom its number date of upload and your name will also be shown below the column of kit number(s).
Cheers
Guy

Thank you. I did it some hours ago, and no number was assigned; following getting your reply here, I did it again, and a number was assigned immediately. We're getting there!

After I uploaded my DNA Data to Gedmatch it took a couple of days for the processing and matches to be found.
Once you are live on Gedmatch you may then like to upload to the other comparison and matching website.
Gedmatch is useful for the Tools but I have had more success with matches elsewhere.

Thank you. I have paid a one-year subscription to MyHeritage and FindMyPast. I get lots of matches, but no one seems to have broken through the brick walls in the 1700s that I mentioned in another comment on the forum. They get as far as I have, and their researches come to a halt, as mine have.
