Title: HAEUSLER Ferdinand 1819-1901
Post by: Dalet on Saturday 09 July 22 04:24 BST (UK)
Hi All,

I am looking for Information on Ferdinand Haeusler  born around 1819 in Prussia and died in 1901 at Morgan, SA.

The information I have is

He is the son of Heinrich Wilhelm Haeusler and Louisa Knappe.

His brothers Johann Gottlob, Johann Wilhelm and Johan Friedrich August came to South Australia from Bremen in 1846 aboard the Pauline. I had been led to believe that Ferdinand came with them -  however I can't find him on that list.

His mother Louisa (nee Knappe) and two of his sisters came out later that same year aboard the Heerjebhoy Patel.

My queries relating to this - how did he get to Australia? Were there any other siblings - family members say there could have been up to 9 brothers.

Feridnand and Mary Gleeson from Ireland have 4 children Mary Ann c 1856-1916 later Mrs Searles, Luise c 1858- 1870, Caroline 1859-1939 later Mrs McKenny and Ferdinand 1861-1940 married Maria Hoffmann.

The first 2 children's births were not registered (I cannot find them) and I cannot find a marriage. Also wondering if there were any other children I have not found.

Many thanks in anticipation

Dale

Answering my own question here.

Found a marriage for Ferdinand HUISLER and Mary GLEESON 5 Aug 1854 at Greenock Creek, SA.

So let's cross that one off the list.

Thanks Dale

Hi Dalet,
I think there is some confusing information around regarding this family.

The Biographical Index of South Australians has entries for some of the HAEUSLER name
The entry for Ferdinand is brief, so not much known.

Arrived by 1857, Occ. splitter. Residence Mt Rufus. Married Mary nee GLEESON. Chn Caroline 1857.

There are some others of the name arriving per "Pauline" in 1846.
Parents do not match your posted information.

This is one of them. Gottlieb.
ADDING- there are sometimes errors on the BISA .

Thanks Sue.

Yes have lots on his "brothers".

Ferdinand is the elusive one. He must have been in Australia by 1854 when he married Mary Gleeson.

The variable spelling of Haeusler doesn't help.

So possibly in SA by 1855…

Was he a councillor at Kungillo?

If so, the local history society may have some information

Did Ferdinand remarry in 1888?
Ferdinand Haeusler, widower, age 68 and Teresa Donovan, widow, 36, Ferdinand’s father shown as Christian Haeusler. Looks like he had a thing for Irish ladies  :)

Yes he did remarry and if that is his father's name he is not a brother of the others.

The other notices certainly look like our man. So maybe some others out there as well.

The naturalisation memorialisation and certificate state he has been in the colony for 6 years.

This puts his date of arrival somewhere in 1846 - 1847.

It also states he is a native of Schoenfeld, Brandenburg, Prussia The same area other Haeusler's in South Australia are from.

Thanks Dale

1859 a slaughtering licence is granted to Wilhelm Haeusler  at Tungkillo

1850 Wilhelm Haeusler is naturalised

I wonder if he sometimes anglicised his name to Frederick? Or if there was also a councillor Frederick Haeusler at Tungkillo? He resigns in 1866

Does that coincide with the mass exodus of German farmers from the area moving to Albury, including several Haeusler families…

Wife Mary died 5 June 1886 at Murray Bridge, I would suggest purchasing either of the marriage certificates of Ferdinand to see details listed, and the death certificate of Mary should list all children of the marriage.

Thanks Sue and jomcd967.

I think you have solved the mystery of the immigration to South Australia. There are variable listings for the passengers of both ships listed below but merging the information available I believe what I have is correct.

Aboard the Pauline which berthed at Adelaide 27th September 1846 we have

Eldest son Johann Gottlob Haeusler, his wife Anna Elizabeth nee Lindner and their 4 eldest children, Johann Wilhelm, Johann August, Johann Heinrich Friedrich and Johann Gottlieb.

Second son Johann Wilhelm Haeusler, his wife Johanne Eleanor nee Schulze and formerley Klinge  their 3 eldest children, Johann Heinrich Ferdinand, Johanne Louisa (later Mrs Wundersitz), and Johann Gottlieb and 3 of Johanne's children from her first marriage to Johann Wilhelm Klinge,  Johann Wilhelm, Johanne Caroline (later Mrs Hoffmann) and August.

Aboard the Heerjebhoy Patel which departed Bremen 27th June 1846 and arrived Adelaide 29 October we have

Louisa Haeusler nee Knappe widow of Heinrich Wilhelm Haeusler and mother of the children listed above and below.
Her two daughters Johanne Wilhelmine later Mrs Lange and Johanne Karoline later Mrs Heinze
and her two unmarried sons Ferdinand and Johann Friedrich August.

According to one listing there is no official record of passengers for this voyage.

Thanks again Dale

Yes I believe this is the same person as Ferdinand. It says he was leaving the colony - I think he changed his mind. His brother Johann Wilhelm and his family including some of the Klinges moved to Wodonga. Other brothers and/or their family moved to the Wimmera district of Victoria.

Hi Dale,

Well I have to say I have not quite got it straight at this point.

So there were brothers to Ferdinand whose parents were HAEUSLER and KNAPP.

You have a record of his marriage and presumably confirmation that his Father matches the assumed  brothers, but there is not an arrival record for Ferdinand

On the marriage to Mary GLEESON his father's name is shown? Correct?

He may have used the name Frederick?

He may have remarried after his wife died?

He did not go to Victoria as did some of the brothers, but died in SA.

Can you confirm or expand on these points ;D

According to Reg Butler's "The Quiet Waters By: the Mount Pleasant District 1843-1993", Wilhelm HAEUSLER, born c1813 came to SA 1846 on ship PAULINE, with his wife, the former widow KLINGE nee SCHULZ and their children. Possibly, the family farmed near Blumberg, but moved to Tungkillo, on new farm land at Section 6416. Eventually the HAEUSLERS crossed to Victoria, where they settled near Wodonga. Sons Ferdinand & Gottlieb farmed at Tungkillo and on the Murray Flats, before also moving over the border. This family originated from Ulbersdorf, near Zullichar, Brandenburg, Prussia.

There is also mention of Gottfried HAEUSLER, b. 1824 Nekla Hauland, Posen, Prussia, who settled at Hoffnungsthal, near Lyndoch and eventually Stony Creek between Mount Pleasant and Birdwood. Married Rosine nee MU(E)LLER. He died 1895.

Also suggested Gottlob HAEUSLER with wife Anna Elisabeth nee LINDNER, arrived ship PAULINE in 1846, living at Blumberg and then moved to Tungkillo c1858. Gottlob moved to Victoria with some of his children where he died 1915 at Sunbury, Melbourne, Victoria.

Answering what I can of your queries Sue

So there were brothers to Ferdinand whose parents were HAEUSLER and KNAPP.

I believe so  - I have listed them all above and below.

You have a record of his marriage and presumably confirmation that his Father matches the assumed  brothers, but there is not an arrival record for Ferdinand

The marriage to Mary Gleeson does not list a father for either party - as is usual for early SA marriages.

On the marriage to Mary GLEESON his father's name is shown? Correct? See above.

He may have used the name Frederick?

I believe this is a typo. All other records of the same event list his name as Ferdinand.

He may have remarried after his wife died?

He remarried Teresa Donovan a widow maiden name O'Flavan in 1888 at the Registry Office in Adelaide. His fathers name is recorded as Christian.

He did not go to Victoria as did some of the brothers, but died in SA.

Correct.

He died in 1901 at Morgan, SA and is buried there.

Here is a listing of his brothers and sisters and their movements in Australia.

1st son: Johann Gottlob (1810-1894) married Anna Elizabeth Lindner in Prussia
She died 1878 Tungkillo, he died 1894 Light Pass

They had 6 children
1. Johann Wilhelm 1833-1922 he married twice, and had children in SA until 1882. By 1902 some of his children by the second marriage were marrying in Victoria and settling in the Wimmera region.
Johann Wilhelm died in Murtoa, as did his second wife.

2. Johann August 1837-1912 stayed in SA, died in Caltowie.
3. Johann Heinrich Ferdinand  1841-1921 stayed in SA, died in Nairne
4. Johann Gottlieb 1845-1914 married in SA and had children here up until 1888. Sometime after this moved to Melton area of Victoria. He died in 1914 at Sunbury.
5. Johann Friedrich died in 1873 in South Australia.
6. Pauline Martha 1852-1919 married Johann Wilhelm Thiele, died South Australia.

2nd son: Johann Wilhelm 1812-1894. He had married a widow Johanne Elenore Klinge nee Schulze in Prussia. Sometime between 1851 and 1867 it appears the whole family including the Klinge children from Johanne's first married moved to Wodonga.

Elder daughter Johanne Wilhelmine 1816- 1869 married Friedrich G Lange in 1847 at Lobethal, shed died in South Australia at Nain.

3rd son: Ferdinand 1819-1901 married twice in South Australia and died at Morgan, SA.
He had 4 children(all with first wife Mary Gleeson), a son also named Ferdinand moved to the Swan Hill area of Victoria sometime after 1890.

4th son: Johannn Friedrich August married in South Australia. With his wife Anna Rosina Hartwich he had 6 children. The family moved to the Warracknabeal area sometime between 1858 and 1876. Anna died in 1886 at Nullan near Minyip and is buried in the Minyip cemetery. JFA died at Bangerang, near Warracknabeal is is buried with his wife.

Younger daughter Johanne Karoline (1826-1904) married Carl F W Heinze in SA and died there at Gnadenfrei.

Hi Dale,
Thanks for your clarifications.
They are a tangled bunch and, as we know, South Australia is not the easiest state for this kind of research.

Wilhelm and Gottlob were brothers - Gottfried is a different family.

Gottlob who I call Johann Gottlob died 1894 at Light Pass, South Australia. It is his son Johann Gottlieb who died at Sunbury on the 8th December 1914.
