Duncan Taylor b1766, who are his ancestors?
Still struggling to go back further than Duncan. Duncan Taylor/Taylour was born in Skipness abt. 1766, he was a master shoemaker. He married Annabel Campbell b.abt.1770 Skipness. The had 10 children all born in Skipness. They are Elfrieth/Euphemia b. 1792, Archibald b.1795 d.1857 Saltcoats, John b.1797, Duncan b. 1799, Catherine b.1801, Gilbert b. 1803, Mary b.1806, Robert b.1809, Annebella b.1812 and Ann b.1815. All this info from the 1841 Scotland census. Duncan Taylor b.1766 is not on the 1841 census, so he must of died before then.
Thanks

You mention the information came from the 1841 census but I would assume by then the family would not have all been together?
How do you know that Duncan and Annabel were born in Skipness, the records there did not begin until later and no death records until Statutory Registration began in 1855.
There are Kirk Session records for Skipness 1783 - 1833.

I note the record you mention for Duncan is on familysearch, the records for the all the children you mention are also there the missing ones spelt Taylour and they are also on SP but did not show up even when using “names that begin with”. Should have used a wild card!
One extra record:
TAYLOUR DONALD DUNCAN TAYLOUR/ANNAPLE CAMPBELL 24/03/1799
I have found the 1841 census and other information for Archibald but no trace of the family in 1851?

The 1851 census might give his correct place of birth, I mention this because there was another record for an ARCHIBALD TAYLOR, PARENTS DONALD TAYLOR/JANET CAMPBELL 7/04/1793 ROTHESAY?

Yes all that you have given is the right family. Thanks for Mary and Ann's family info.
According to a naming pattern of the children one would think Archibald would be the name of Duncan Taylor/Taylour b.1766 father and his mother's name would be Catharine. Unless the Scots did not follow that naming pattern.
-
Scottish Naming Pattern.
First son was named after his father's father
Second son was named after his mother's father
Third son was named after his father
First daughter was named for her mother's mother
Second daughter was named for her father's mother
Third daughter was named after her mother
Other daughters were named after other family members
Naming patterns can help but don't be misled into thinking that any of this is a hard and fast rule. In this instance like many others where records are limited they may have be recorded and if they were not all records survived.
You might fin this helpful. https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ARL/SaddellAndSkipness
The only record I can see on SP in Scotland for Annabella below.
ANNABELLA CAMPBELL DONALD CAMPBELL 29/07/1774 SOUTHEND, ARGYYL
The one you posted, seems to be their only child?
TAYLOR DUNCAN ROBERT TAYLOR/MARY BROWN 08/11/1767 DUNOON AND KILMUN
There is also this for Duncan.
TAYLOR DUNCAN - ARCHIBALD TAYLOR - K/CATHARINE THOMSON 12/04/1763 ROTHESAY, BUTE. Also sons John, Archibald & George.
Colin
PS: The record for Donald born 1799, which I posted, is the correct record, there is no Duncan.

That about Donald and Duncan has confuse the relatives and myself. One would think that one of the sons would be named after their grandfather Duncan.
Thanks for your help Colin.
