Hi, Looking for the Baptism of William Birkett, born abt 1825, Bentham, Yorkshire. Also had a Brother James. Parents unknown. Many thanks.
-
Is this linked to your post for a William Birkett born around the same time in Beetham :-\

Yes Rosie. I have now found out that it was Bentham not Beetham. A mistake on the Census records!

Hi, In your other post you say you have William in the 1841 census, are you absolutley sure you have the correct William, can you please give a reference. Also you state he had a brother James. What evidence do you have of that please. I believe I have found your William's baptism, naming his parents, their marriage and details of William's siblings.

Hi John, Well, William appears on the Census's from 1841-1901. On some he states as being born in Beetham, Bentham, Beatholm? I read these as mis spellings by the enumerator. William always worked as a Bobbin turner. By 1871, he owns Cross Gill Mill, Caton, Littledale, Lancs. He then went bankrupt and moved to Keithley, Yorkshire. I have copied the details from the 1851 Census. Citation information
HO107/2441/44 p 17
I have the will of a William Birkett of Middleriggs, Troutbeck dated 1872. William leaves William of Cross gill Mill and his Brother James of Grasmere, money and silver items. I just cannot find the parents! OR James of Grasmere. Thanks.

1841 Census, Grasmere Westmorland
HO107/1159 Book 10 Folio 9 p11
He's at Skelwith Bridge aged 15 and not born in the county. Skelwith Bridge is where I descend from, Birkett's/Cowards.

there's this James in Grasmere

When he married Elizabeth Harrington 5 Oct 1850 his father was noted as William Birkett. He was baptised in 9 Jan 1820 Grasmere son of William & Hannah.

1861 has his place of birth as Beetham Westmorland not Bentham Yorkshire

Yes it does but, following census records range from Beetham, Beatholm, Betham?? Trancription error I think.
-
possibly enumerator error on the census. If you check the return for the 1881 census, nearly all the places of birth for the family are given as Yorkshire
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27R-4LSH
Matterdale was in Cumberland, Longtown Cumberland, Troutbeck Bridge Westmorland, Skelwith Lancashire & Littledale in Lancashire. So I wouldn't put too much trust in that census return.
Do you have the marriage cert for William & Sarah to confirm names of their fathers and occupations?
-
The only marriage details I have is, 5 Jul 1846 • Old Wesleyan Chapel, Ambleside, Cumbria
Marriage Event Date: 1846 Event Place: Kendal, Westmorland, England Name: William Birkett Volume: 26 Affiliate Line Number: 11 Registration Quarter: Jul-Aug-Sep Registration Year: 1846 Possible Spouse: Sarah Bradley

I was hoping that someone may have the parish register for Bentham to check for his Baptism?
-
It is all very confusing! ???
-
First Son born named James Bradley Birkett so maybe Williams Father was James? Second child, William, Third Hannah, Forth John Thomas, fifth, Sarah Ann, sixth, David. All the names ring true to parents connections etc apart from David??
-
so you've dismissed the baptism of William 20 June 1824 in Beetham son of William & Hannah?

You can get a copy of the marriage cert from the GRO

Hi, No nothing is dismissed yet. I'm just trying to figure it all out! Just made me think, children were usually named after parents etc so why was the first one named James? The Bradley bit is most likely after the Mothers maiden name, Sarah Bradley. Thanks
-
Have you read my reply showing that there was possibly a son John born before James?
-
Yes, that's interesting..
