Title: How to Order a Will found in Cheshire: - Wills and Inventories, 1801-1810 (A-L)
Post by: abbyabc19 on Monday 05 September 22 13:39 BST (UK)
Hi everyone, I'm looking into a person called William Lindsey and came across a hint on Ancestry for his potential will/probate record:

Name:   Lindsey, William
Dates:   16 Nov 1804
Place:   Liverpool, Cheshire, England
Book:   Births Anno 1657. (Birth)
Collection:   Cheshire: - Wills and Inventories, 1801-1810 (A-L)
Volume:   List of Wills and Administrations (Including the Infra Wills), Now Preserved in the Probate Registry at Chester. For the Years 1801-1810, Both Inclusive.
Chapter:   A to L.
Text:   Lindsey, William, of Liverpool, merchant Ad. 16 Nov 1804.

People who have saved this record have gotten the additional information that he was born 9/1/1749 in Woodbury, Devon, England. This fits with the information I have on him so far, and I would really like to see/buy a copy of this record but cannot find it anywhere!

There was also a record on Ancestry that has a broken link to National Archives - I tried searching the collection there but came up empty.

I've also searched Cheshire's gov.uk site, findmypast, familysearch, probatesearch etc. and am stuck on where to search next.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or experience looking into other wills from this book? Any help will be deeply appreciated!

Have you tried the archives at Chester?

It's listed on findmypast.
Liverpool is in Lancashire, and the entry says "Lancashire Archives Probate Index Archdeaconry of Cheshire (supra wills 1800 - 1858)".
It is in the "Lancashire Wills & Probate 1457- 1858".
"Archive reference 617A/76"
You have to send for a copy to Lancashire County Council in Preston for it.

Added:
The entry is on The National Archives Discovery site, (search for "William Lindsey" Liverpool - you need to put the inverted commas around his name, or you get hundreds of hits!), says
'November 16 1804 Abstract of Administration of William Lindsey, Merchant and Bachelor of Liverpool, LAncashire, Proved in the Court of Chester'.
It's free to download at the moment.
Are you hoping he is he your ancestor?

Welcome to Rootschat.
As goldie said, it is an administration, not a will.
You can see it for free on FamilySearch.

Reverse side of the document is on the following image, the wrapper is on the preceding image, 157.

It does indeed say that William Lindsey was a bachelor.

Thank you all so much! I don't know why I didn't think to check administrations - I think my brain had had enough by then!

No, he's not one of my ancestors; I'm looking into a family legend of a loved one and had hoped William Lindsey could shed some light. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be the person I'm looking for, but I'm very grateful to you all for helping me figure that out!
