Title: Help with a Census reference or Help with a White family in Whitchurch
Post by: cockney rebel on Wednesday 23 November 22 18:40 GMT (UK)
Hi  there,
first, I am at a bit of a loss as to where to post this!
It concerns the place "Whitchurch", of which there are several.
In this case, I mean Herefordshire, but Ancestry gives the Reg district as Monmouth and then again I find references to Whitchurch, Glamorgan.
Possibly, historically, all one and the same and definitely all places with which my  ancestors were connected.

I have the family of William White occ farmer (at Ancestry as Whitt) with his wife
Eliza (b 1807 English Bicknor, Glos nee Probert),
sons Hen(e)ry b 1836,
William b 1837 and
Milson Thomas b 1839 in Whitchurch at Yew Tree Farm

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discoveryui-content/view/5018391:8978

I have  the sons  in the 1851 and 1861 Censuses, but not the parents.
William senior possibly died in 1846 (from a newspaper report)but his wife Eliza I first find again in the 1871 as a widow, annuitant and living in the household of her brother James Probert in Merthyr.

My main question is:
Can anyone help me with the Census location of Yew Tree Farm in the 1851 and 1861 Census and who was living there ? I can't find it!

And of course, where was Eliza inbetween?
Many thanks for any help

In 1851 Richard Davis age 29 and his wife Jane and children are at Yew Tree House.
I’m guessing this might be the farm, just a little lower down the Turnpike is noted in a similar position as on the 1841 and on the next page Hill House is also shown, this may have been Hill Farm on the 1841 census.

There were a large number of William White death registrations in England & Wales 1846, as Whitchurch is on the border, none of those below appear to be correct but it might have been registered elsewhere?

Partly in Herefordshire until 1.10.1935.
WHITE, WILLIAM       59

WHITE, WILLIAM       69

Partly in Herefordshire until 1891.

Whitchurch, Herefordshire, was a Civil Registration District from 1837 until 1935.
Transferred to Ross R.D. in 1935.

Sadly no GRO death for a William White there in 1846 and no Whitchurch records on freebmd to widen the search years.

Many thanks for that!
I have managed to find Yew Tree House in the 1861 Census as well, looked at all the names in the hope of finding a mis-transcription but no luck.

In the 1841 Census, William White's age is 40
wife Eliza b 1807 as 30.
The William White who died 1n 1846, noted in the newspaper as Farmer is aged at 59 and also at the GRO. To "round him down" to 40 seems to me unlikely but possible. I have no idea of his birthyear. The couple marry by Licence in 1835 , English Bicknor, with no other info apart from that he is of "Whitchchurch" (so written) in Herefordshire.

Even presuming that William has died, I would really like to find Eliza and have been checking all the relatives she might be housing with.
It's a muddle

I note the marriage record on Ancestry but it was by Banns.

William White of Whitchurch in Herefordshire to Eliza Roberts of the parish, both signed and both were single 8 Jan 1835 English Bicknor, Gloucestershire.
Witnesses: Frederick Mays? & John James or Jones?

Hi again
Yes, that is the correct date of marriage but the surname is Probert - not Robert.

BUT my Ancestry image is defintely Marriage by Licence!
How very odd!

Or if the attachment isn't showing

Both parties would have been of full age so I doubt the actual licence would tell me much-----even if I knew where to find it!
I read the witnesses names as Fred. Mayo and John James
Is your record at Ancestry just a transcription?

I realise it was Probert but that is how the name was transcribed, There are two records for the marriage on Ancestry, the one I quoted was the parish record, going by the writing which is not as clear, I think the one you are quoting is most likely a bishops transcript.

Just to add I note that on the 1841 census, neither William or Eliza were born in Herefordshire.

Cockney Rebel - copies of the marriage bond and allegation can probably be obtained from

I note some of the census records for the children, all are away from Whitchurch.
Below the baptism of Elisa, also that Milsons birth was registered at Monmouth.
But no clear census or death for William

Eliza Probert
Baptism Date:   7 Jan 1807
Baptism Place:   English Bicknor, Gloucester – 2 miles from Whitchurch, Hereford
Father:   Thomas Probert
Mother:   Elizabeth

WHITE, MILSON  THOMAS     PROBERT

Good Evening!
Thankyou Colin and BumbleB for the info and suggestions-
Hereford Archives has no method for ordering/paying electronically and I will leave that path open until I find perhaps some more info.

But many thanks Colin for reminding me how often the P is left out of the transcription and becomes Robert and not Probert.
Armed with this info I did a whole new batch of searches for my "lost" William Probert ( a 4th brother of my Eliza) as Wm Robert and have managed to trace him for another 50 years until he dies in 1897!
Also, on 2 of the censuses, he has i) my missing GG-Uncle from Cardiff with him and ii) on another his niece!  I was well pleased!
I'm still working through those families to see if my Eliza White puts in an appearance, but I am hopeful!
Many thanks for your input
