Title: Ida Hamilton - Omaha - Questions
Post by: KennyBrown.NI on Monday 16 January 23 04:37 GMT (UK)
I hope someone can help. None of the people mentioned below are alive. I am trying to unscramble their relationships.

1930 Census - Omaha
Roberta Lewis - Head - Widower
John Jr Lewis - Adopted Son
Beatrice Lewis - Daughter
Ida Hamilton - Neice - Single
Anderson Hamler - Roomer - Widower

1940 Census - Omaha
Anderson Hamler - Head - Married
Roberta Hamler -  Wife - Married
Anderson Hamler - Son - Single
Andrew Glen - Lodger - Married
Estella Glen -Lodger - Married

1944 Anderson Hamler Obituary listed:
Survived by his wife Mrs Roberta Lewis Hamler, daughter Mrs Beatrice Lewis, Son Mr Anderson Hamler and Step daughter Mrs Ida Hamilton.

1976 Ida Hamilton Obituary listed:
Son: John Hamler.

Ida Hamilton's date of birth was given on the obituary as 23rd June 1906 and census data listed her as being from Arkansas.

Questions:
1: If Ida Hamilton is John's birth mother, is Anderson his birth father or unknown?
2: Who is Ida Hamilton is she actually related to Anderson or Roberta?
3: Who is Ida Hamilton's parents?
4. 1910, 1920, 1940 & 1950 Census's where is our Ida Hamilton?

Ask social security, this is where you have obtained her birth date.

When she applied the names of her parents were required that should help as her mother's maiden name will be recorded, and in turn hopefully her place in the family.

1930 Ida is single and a niece to Roberta, however the 1944 obituary lists her as Mrs. Hamilton and a step daughter to Anderson Hamler.  Possibly to add respectability if the child John was hers out of wedlock.

The birth certificate index for Nebraska state John J Hamler was born 21 April 1929 in Douglas Nebraska, father listed as Anderson Hamler.

It was a delayed birth certificate though, the information "should" be accurate.

Certificate number 09028. It will give his mother's name.

If John was adopted, his birth certificate may have been changed to reflect his adoptive parents.

Roberta's obituary has her children listed as Mrs. Beatrice Lewis, Mrs. Ida Hamilton, and Joseph Hamler.  https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116575239/

Seems like the Mrs. has no relationship to their actual marital status.  I don't know where Joseph came from, but maybe they messed up the name John.

Anderson & Roberta married in Council Bluffs, Iowa on 4 Sep 1929.  Roberta was listed as Gertie Roberta Lewis (maiden name Chandler), age 41, residence Omaha, Nebr., b. Clay Co., Mississippi to Henry Chandler & Belle Cotrol.  Beatrice Lewis was the witness.

Based on the marriage record, they would have been married by the 1930 census, so not sure why they weren't listed as such there.  Did the information come from a neighbor who didn't know they were married?  Were they hiding the marriage?  I don't know.

Anderson & Goldie Roberta were listed in the newspaper regarding their marriage license, so it wasn't too secret.  https://www.newspapers.com/clip/116575854/

Not sure where Ida was in the census prior to 1930, but many city directories have her in Omaha.

The address where Ida was in the 1930 census was 961 North 25th Street, and a lot of the directories have her at the same address.

Beatrice Lewis in 1930 was Beatrice Houston in 1920 age 7 daughter.
other listed were John Lewis 47 born Arkansas and Roberta Lewis 39

They married 7 February 1925 in Oklahoma so Beatrice Houston (born circa 1913) is from another relationship unless she should be Beatrice Houston Lewis on the census?
John and Roberta were not formally married at the time of the census either.
