Hi,all
My Mum in Law was a bit of a mystery regarding her past. I'm trying to find out where she was born but, she has several last names. On her marriage certificate she was Margaret Laurie formerly Margaret Laurie McIntyre or Muir, on her death certificate she was Margaret Laurie. She was born on 01/11/1926 but, where??.
We all thought she came from Carluke but, there seems to be a connection to Kippen.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

It is alway a good idea to capitalise surnames especially in Scotland where names that are traditionally surnames are used as forenames and middle names. Is it correct that Laurie was her middle name as in Margaret Laurie McINTYRE or MUIR? Who did she name as her parents when she married?

I agree with Dundee re the details on her marriage - names etc.
There are two births 1926 on Scotlands People for Margaret Laurie MUIR,
Plus 2 for Margaret Laurie McINTYRE
One of those in Drymen has the same reference.

When she died her mother's maiden surname is indexed as McINTYRE so it may be that she was either born before her mother's marriage with a MUIR or perhaps there was no marriage. By the look of the birth registrations it may be that a father is named but the parents are unmarried.

She was known as Margaret Laurie, her Mothers married name was Janet Muir, maiden name was McIntyre., married to Walter Muir but, he died before Margaet was born, and I have absolutely no idea where Laurie came into this.

You could always put a request on the Scotland page to ask if anyone is going to Register House in the near future and they could look it up for you so you don’t have to buy the certificate.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've just found the connection to Kippen, her Mother re-married in 1937..... still no joy with the Laurie name but, I'll keep going.

Walter Muir, married to Janet McIntyre, died in Shotts in 1917.
So it looks as if Margaret was illegitimate, hence the register recording two surnames for her.
I speculate that Laurie is the name of her biological father.
An illegitimate birth can only be registered under the father's surname if he accompanies the mother when she goes to register the birth, and signs the certificate along with her.
If the father doesn't do this, it's not uncommon for the mother to give the child its father's name, in this case (probably) his surname as a middle name.
If a court of law finds that a certain person is the father, this creates a record in the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) to that effect, but the original certificate is not altered.
The child can use any surname it likes it later life.

Thank you, we suspected this.
I had problems with my Paternal G/mother, she has 5 different names but, thanks to the wonderful people on this site, I discovered she had been married 5 times.

Update.... Margaret was born in Cambuslang, her birth was registered there and then a few days later it was transcribed at Drymen.

The rule was that a birth had to be registered in the Registration District where it occurred.
If, however, the parents' usual residence was in a different RD, the Registrar in the birth RD had to send the details to the Registrar in the RD where the parents lived, and he then added it to his register, so you get two records of the same event.
