Title: Diary summary week ending 10 March 2024
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 04 March 24 09:16 GMT (UK)
Morning folks,  here begineth another week.
Beautiful day here after a frosty start, hope you are all feeling  chipper.

Not a lot going on apart from Drs  appt checking up on medication  ,they really put the frighteners on you if you decline medication  so have to have a chat today to decide what I will do, I do seem to be ticking along ok.

Would be nice if we had a few days of sunshine to dry the gardens up  my grass is quite boggy with all the rain, needs mowing  but will have to wait.

Take care

LM

It seems that the old adage of "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb" isn't on the cards this year.  I have a lovely blue sky above my rooftop and it's this sort of weather that brings out the urge to spring clean..  I washed a load of laundry during the cheap electricity period but it wont go outside to dry because despite the sunshine there's a lot of moisture in the air.  the items will be hung on my clothes dryer and the radiators.  At last (!) I have some blossoms in the my garden.  Small "alpine" daffodils are smiling in the large blue plantpots in my back yard and the front garden is now waking up with a show of small blue and also white flowers,  goodness knows what they are , I shall ask son to take a photo and enlarge it so that I can name them :-)

There's been a news item about children starting school and not being toilet trained so are wearing nappies/diapers. The youngsters don't even have a family word to utter when they need to relieve either their bladder or their bowel .   I've been sorting through some of my old 1940s photographs, that include mums with babes in arms - the babies wearing white sheeting as napkins.  Additionally, tots aren't wearing nappies/diapers on the beach or in parks, they're running around wearing tops only, which meant the tot knew when it was watering the grass and which part of the body it came from.   Due to rationing , I remember my mother cutting up a pair of my grandmother's bloomers to make me a pair of knickers.  The photos show that the elastic in one leg has given up the ghost , which meant one leg of the garment was hanging down showing just how much room had been left for me to "grow into".

I shall be piecing together one of my old Alfred Hitchcock jigsaw mystery puzzles:  "read,  assemble, solve."

Best wishes to everyone,
Rena

Hello, just been out in the glorious sunshine checking if the washing is dry.

What a lovely day.
Heard a bird in a nearby big tree singing what sounded like “ appeetzapeetzapeetzapeet” another from right down at the cemetery answered the same ,it went in fir a good few minutes ,no idea what it could be but as well as I could see it in thr twigs it was not as big as a pigeon but bigger like than a sparrow ,seemed a whitish chest.
Must look in my bird book .
Well groundbreaking news! I am booked in at a Dentist, very local as a NHS patient.
My appointment yesterday at my usual one cost £65 for a look, but I once again had to tell the Dentist I had a cavity at the back of the last top molar ,and a chip broken off another molar from something very hard in Granola breakfast cereal!
It is ridiculous, he has a big plan for my teeth, pre Covid was costing £6,000 but now will be £9000!and that is a conservative estimate.
I phoned on chance ,and got taken on ,appointment on Wednesday 13March .
at another Dentist.
They had advertised that they had taken on another Dentist so I phoned after my son told me .There is a bus stop opposite going and one nearby on the same side returning .
My next appointment at the expensive one is Wednesday 21st March, hopefully I can cancel that .
, at the new Dentust March 13th.
It will be difficult if I am not happy with what is done !
But I think I am allowed to try what I can afford against really expensive treatment .

Did anybody watch the TV documentary “ The Push” ? It was gripping stuff ..Interesting to see Scotland’s legal system in action.

The Sarah Everard case is on this evening and the search for Flight  MH370 which disappeared ten years ago.

Hope those unwell have some improvement ,I feel quite a bit better after only two days if the revised medication .

Well ,might do a bit of gardening , I think the apple tree buds have been prcjed away—- Bullfinches are often the culprits !

Cheerio.
Viktoria.

Hello Viktoria

I had to have an emergency extraction of a chipped tooth in December 2020. I suggested it should be x-rayed, the Dentist agreed and the x-ray suggested the root had died and the tooth was already dead, causing it to break up and show externally.

No amount of filling, capping or whatever would have saved it.

The x-ray and 2nd visit for extraction was £62.10

There are a set of standard NHS contributory costs for NHS Dental work, when you don't qualify for totally free NHS Dentistry.

Doesn't sound like he had much of a look if you had to tell him about the cavity Viktoria!
Good luck with the new one.

Correction, just looked at my NHS Contributory Cost of NHS Dental Treatment 16/11/20 and this Extraction was £62.10 which included the X-ray and first visit.

Now subject to modest inflation rises.

Mark

He told me my tooth had died due to Influenza and a subsequent Inflammatory Response.

How much will I pay for NHS dental treatment?

https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/dentists/how-much-will-i-pay-for-nhs-dental-treatment/

Bear in mind
"Some people do not have to pay for NHS dental treatment."

My Wife says the NHS Dentist used to claim the balance from the Government and I believe Dentists still do, where a person pays the above NHS rates, in the link.

But Dentists are saying the outlay of running a Dentist Practice is pretty huge and most want to go Private and the Private Fees seem to be out of the question for a lot of people.

I've noticed that if you are referred by an NHS Dentist to a Private one and you accept, then it seems you pay the NHS Dentist his charge and the Private Dentist his Fee.

Title: Re: Diary summary week ending 10 March 2024
Post by: Viktoria on Wednesday 06 March 24 09:40 GMT (UK)
Gosh that would be expensive!

The work the private Dentist wants to do is one continuous crown over all my lower incisors because the top edge is worn away, that was to be £6,000.
My argument was if one of them needs a root canal filling the whole lot would have to come away —— as it is my gums have receded so there is no enamel
along the lower gum line and that is sensitive too.
Why not enamel along the gum line and top fillings when if and needed .£6,000 was 2020,pre Covid ,vastly more expensive now.
In addition I have Osteoporosis ,and when teeth are extracted your jaw thinks it is becoming redundant and you can self absorb it ,I would end up looking like the witch of Ramsbottom !
The penalty paid for extreme Hyperemisis in pregnancy ie morning ( noon and night ) sickness for months, all three babies.
That stomach acid washing over your teeth thousands of times a day !
Have a rinse out to take the taste away and then it starts all over again.

Ah well, it willl be sorted but yes Roobarb It has happened before ,me telling him I had a small cavity when he dudn’t mention one.
You see him first, then the hygienist a few weeks later and her report means another visit then another for the filling .Paying each time.
He us rapidly becoming known as a bandit !
But I could not get in anywhere when my Dentist of many years retired , this one was just setting up and had vacancies but it was Job’s Choice, no others in a reasonable distance had vacancies .

A nice morning , did a bit of gardening yesterday afternoon ,pruning dead stalks etc.
My Captain Sir Tom rose is full of fat buds .
Wonder what that bird was, have looked but none have an ordering a pizza call !

Well must get on.
Hope all are alright and those with health problems some improvement.
Cheerio.Viktoria.

A busy week for me, starting last Saturday with a visit to hospital for CT and MRI scans related to my melanoma.  Sunday = nothing.  Monday visit to GP for blood sample to be taken, then to the Physiotherapist, and finally a visit to the eye hospital for my first consultation related to cataracts.  Tuesday = nothing.  Today a telephone consultation related to my melanoma, and now I have just received a call to say that my first cataract removal will be tomorrow morning.

Hopefully nothing else.  :-X :-X

Take care and let us know how you go on.

I hope all goes well with the cataract removal today BumbleB.
That sounds good that they are being thorough with your melanoma treatment.  I wish you well with this too.
I agree with Viktoria that you deserve a medal or two for fortitude for patience in coping whilst these situations are sorted out.

Just a happy update from me .. my Grandson has been able to go into maintenance treatment. :D  Still a long way to go with things but he is now able to return to normal life to a degree.  They have bought him a new uniform and sent me a photo.  He looks so smart and happy!  I am now able to see him again in person.  He loves being back at school (part time) and has also been able to return to his weekly swimming class.  Thank you to everyone who has prayed for him.

I have often thought that you do too R,T,L!

Gruelling journeys and often not well.
How are you now?
Were  expecting a break so I hope it has buoyed you up quite a bit and the good news  about your Grandson too ,lovely.

Another bright morning .
Easy day today , fish and chips for tea.

My friend  of many years in Wales,on The Gower, is 90 tomorrow, she lost her son a little while ago -a very sudden death.
I have sent a card but thought some flowers would also be nice ,well no luck as it is of course Mothering Sunday on Sunday and florists are busy and booked up.Well Welsh ones are !
I will phone tomorrow and send a plant on Monday from our friendly garden centre. That will go into her garden.

Well must get on ,look after yourselves folks .
Viktoria.

Thanks Viktoria, yes it is lovely news re my Grandson.
And yes, I have had my break .. and it truly felt amazing to get enough sleep for a time!  I could become addicted to that.  Back to normal now though.

That is very kind of you to send a Birthday card  and hopefully arrange to send a plant to your poor friend who has lost her son.  It will surely be a sad Mother's Day for her.

A recent happening .. the council workers turned up yesterday and unexpectedly removed the tree stump that has been standing in front of my house.  They felled the huge tree some while back as the branches were falling onto the roof of the neighbours' house and mine.  I thought they were just planning to leave the stump but now it seems surprising to see it gone in entirety.

RTL, that's such good news about your grandson, what a relief for you all and how lovely for you to be able to see him in person. Very pleased to hear that you've had a good rest and a decent break from your work.

Re the tree stump, it may have been done now because at the end of the financial year the councils have to spend any money left in their budgets as it can't be carried forward. No idea why that is, seems barmy to me but that's the way it's always been!

My local council was apparently given a grant to maintain the bridleways. The nearby lane that goes all the way down to the coast road was very narrow further down, the whole lane has now had the verges cut right back and the hedges have been given a very hard pruning. The lane is now much wider, unfortunately that means that some people who don't know the area think they can drive down but find out part way down that that isn't the case! And I believe some satnavs have sent people that way too.

The pruning hasn't gone down well with some people who think the vegetation has been killed off but it won't be long before everything is green again and stronger than ever.

I've cut my front lawn today, it's pretty chilly here but I took the chance after there's at last been a run of a few dry days.

Hope the op has gone well BumbleB.  :)

First cataract removed!!  No real pain, just like having a bit of grit in the eye.  It will also be better when I can remove the plastic shield during the day - from tomorrow.   :)

We have had far to much heavy rain for me to be able to cut the lawn, was a beautiful day yesterday, I went to the coast and sitting  on the cliffs the sun was so warm I could feel it on my knees even though I had trousers on, today bright but cold and windy, a few days like this I might get my lawn mown, the gardening is down to me.

RTL,  my Dr has encouraged me  to start to take BP medication, didn't want to but with all  the problems  you can have if you don't can't bear thinking about, so reluctantly I have been persuaded

Viktoria,  you are a very caring soul  to your friends who seem to be suffering from time to time.

Someone I know very well was holidaying in India when her husband suddenly died, about a week ago,  she hasn't returned home yet, they had intended to stay for 4 months , feel very sad for her having to come home alone.

I had better jump to it as  they say, our grandaughter  is coming  in for a meal this evening.

Bumble B, hope all  went well for you today.

Yes, that probably is why the stump has gone if they can't carry money over, as you say.
Oh you've done well to cut your lawn already.  I'll have to try to get mine done too the first reasonably nice day when I'm off.  Too bitter today for me.

I'm glad to hear you had no real pain Bumble B.  Hopefully, you can put your feet up now and relax for the rest of the night knowing that is out the way.

LM, I know what you mean.  I wasn't best pleased about having to go on bp meds to begin with but hopefully it will keep us going for longer.  Last time I had mine checked I was told it is now alright .. due to the med.

Glad it is all done Bumble Bee .
Take it easy now .

A very cold evening ,Very cold.
Electric blanket tonight.!

Have to go to Dr’s Surgery tomorrow with my copy of the letter from the Nurse practitioner at the Hospital.
I was supposed to have a kidney test 7-10 days after my hospital visit ,that was  February  13th.Nothing as yet.
It was a “ repeat kidney test “ ,well I haven’t had any as yet!
It would also seem the usual copy has not reached the Health Centre - yet on my copy it says that a copy was sent electronically .
Oh Dear, it will get sorted I am sure.

Just watched the Young Writers’ awards being presented ,some very clever children.
Last part of the attempted rescue of the people in the Titan sub, viewing the Titanic wreck ,tonight.

Cheerio folks.
Hope you all get a good night’s sleep.

RTL - so very pleased to hear news of your grandson although still a way to go but uplifting to be able to see him in person. They are such a delight these grandchildren and definitely lift ones spirits. Good news too that you’ve had you much awaited weeks break and hope you feel refreshed to co to us on with your scheldules!

BB - good to hear your eye op has been successful, it’s certainly good to get the shield off in the morning. You’ll find its wonderful how much better you can see so quickly after the op! Hope all your other treatments go well too.

Viktoria- it’s a good job you’re on the ball re all your medical situations, they don’t seem to be getting to grips with electronic details! Good old paper copies! I’m sure your friend will really welcome the plant you’re sending her.

LM - going onto BP medication has to be good… I’ve just done a 7 day bo monitoring and looks like I’ll have to be going on it too 😢 don’t take any meds for anything so I’m a nap it disappointed that I will have to.

Roobarb- well done for mowing your lawn our is still  soggy and squelchy… our neighbour did his and then we had a frost and now it’s looking dreadful!

Hope everyone who’s not feeling great soon will feel better, hopefully a bit of warm sunshine would buck us all up!

Just trying to phone my friend in Wales,The South Gower,no answer but could be in the shower, it is her 90 th Birthday today, but won’t feel like celebrating having  so recently lost her eldest son .

Hope your eye feels better today, BumbleB.
A greyish morning ,I have to deliver a letter that came yesterday and a copy ought to have been sent to the Health Centre but of course hasn’t ,so I will ring first, maybe it has got to them by now but it does say it has been sent electronically to my GP, but up to yesterday it had not!
Also mentions a “ recent renal test” well I must have been unconscious because I haven’t had one!
Oh dear .
Imagine these things happening to someone housebound and even more forgetful than I am!
Enough of me .

Those who watched the second half of the programme about the mini submersible going to see the wreck of Titanic, whew, a lot of mistakes and risks taken ,the risk taker was one in it too .
I think we have much film footage if the wreck and it is in a way a grave and ought to be respected now.

Hood you get in with your BP medication Caw and LM.
It can help your heart and stave off strokes and other things , it will be a great help.

I will phone the Health Centre after one more try to contact my birthday friend .

The return of clear blue skies and the yellow glow of Phoebe in the sky yesterday and today brought me out of my usual winter torpor and I started a clear out of  years of accumulated documents, stored in cupboards.  that I no longer need.    the bin men will be surprised at the amount of paper they find in my bin on their next visit.

The Alfred Hitchcock mystery murder puzzle that I'm currently doing  is coming along but for the life of me I can't recall previously doing it, although I can see that I've cellotaped the bag that holds the pieces, which I usually do.

Phoebe awoke me early today and I hand washed a few smalls before having breakfast.  I'd just settled down to enjoy a TV programme when two little girlish squeals startled me - I had two more hours of excitedly squealing children aged one and three asking me to  "Snickersneeze me grandma".  "My turn grama".  I think the three year old has been here before and she's a whizz at maths !!!

A dull day today and rather cold,  rain forecast for this evening and tomorrow. I hope there was a good turnout for the Spring Fayre at Church today. I regret not being able to do my bit these days, there is always a lot of hard work involved.

I had a wonderful surprise this afternoon, a visit from a friend I hadn’t seen for sixty two years. It was a real trip down memory lane. We were born five months apart in opposite houses, we played together from being toddlers, although we went to different schools. We last met just before my OH and I moved abroad, we have always kept in touch but never managed to meet up.

It’s surprising the memories that one can dredge up from all those years ago. ;D ;D

Jebber that was a surprise,  I expect  you had a lot  to talk about.

After such a reasonable few days I had promised  myself that I would mow the lawn this week,  woke up this morning  to rain again, no chance of mowing , it is far to wet, I need a couple of sheep or goats at this rate,   the mower will struggle.

I am on the coffee rota at church, today,  instead of our service being 09.15,   which suits me it has been changed to a joint service at 11am, it is not my rota day but I have been doing the someone else's turn who is recovering from cancer to help her other half,  what a mistake that I am doing  today, the other person doesn't  pull her weight, it will be  busy being  mothering Sunday, but hey ho that's life.

Bumble B, pleased your eyes are settling down  you will be surprised how much better you can see and how much brighter things are, I remember having  to wear sun glasses if the sun was out due to the glare.

Viktoria, hope you managed to contact your friend.

Enjoy mothering Sunday today.

I've just enjoyed a rather laid back Mothering Sunday. No expensive rushed meal out (by request), but just my children and grandchildren coming round for a cuppa and a slice of cake and lots of fun.  I had made Merry Berry's Orange Drizzle Cake, a lovely sponge cake with orange butter cream filling, which is always successful.  It's a light fluffy sponge with good flavour and my health-minded daughter cut small slices because of the sugar content!  Chocolate Fingers and a bowl of crisps for the children completed the feast.  I had planned to serve salmon with new potatoes and broccoli for supper, but it's after 5 o'clock now and we don't feel very hungry yet, so I might postpone the salmon until tomorrow and just have a bit of salad.  We are supposed to be on a diet, having been away for the past week and eaten too much food.

As my daughter said in her card we had our Mother’s Day on Friday.. I went to stay with them from Thursday to Saturday. I visited my cousin on Thursday for lunch and then my daughter and I went to the V & A on Friday to see the Chanel exhibition… it was wonderful the garments were exquisite , the workmanship beautiful and designs, materials all delightful. My Mum used to wear the Chanel styled suits back in the day. It was a delightful day to spend with her and have some quality time together.

Today is her day with her boys .. football matches in the rain this morning 😩😩 and then out for lunch.

Wishing everyone the best for next week

Caroline

I have to say that my daughter and I banned Mother's Day a long time ago.  I though that it was horrendous that prices went up around this time - extracting extra money from children  8)  :-X :-X and so we abandoned it.

Lovely surprise yesterday. A friend from the local Methodist Church, where Jane and I had begun to attend on a regular basis and intended to move our membership there from our current church ten miles away, brought a posy of daffodils from their service. Very thoughtful gesture on the first Mothering Sunday without her.
Also messages from the boys, one in London and one in Australia-but the Australia Mothers day is on a different date so there will another message later on.
Not yet sure about when to return to a Sunday morning service. I go along to their Saturday coffee morning, which is nice and relaxed and they are all very friendly.
The temporary (I hope) loss of my driving licence, following my Christmas fall, is limiting my activities, but I have support in that direction from friends and neighbours so I can manage with the necessary trips to hospital and shopping and so on.

How strange Jeff, I wondered yesterday that you hadn't been online  or I hadn't seen you, and here you are today

That was a nice gesture from your friends.

Our priest did a fantastic service mainly for  the children, we had the biggest congregation apparently, I was on coffee helping out when the other person  wasn't well enough after having chemo, fortunately I didn't t have to do the washing up which we normally do, 3 very kind  ladies did the washing up and putting away, that was a huge help, normally we use chunky mugs, far to big in my opinion but yesterday we had cups and saucers, I was surprised how many declined a saucer, easier without.

Well we are into another week now, how time is flying by .

Hope everyone had a good weekend, take care.

I hope all are well, or improving if you are unwell.

Despite the MH370 aircraft documentary, there are not any new facts.

This recent event is getting a lot of searches ...

Both Pilots asleep, radio contact lost for 28 minutes, aircraft veered off course apparently?

Son here garden vouchers and number one son a bowl of Hyacinths.

Daughter phones this evening .

Been sorting out the gas fire, it is so slow to ignite again ,new batteries in the remote control and start motor to no avail.
Insured so a visit soon from repairers.

A grey day ,but  not very cold.
It seems to be getting lighter lately.

Hope all are well and those having had recent treatment feeling much better.

I’d completely forgotten it was Mother’s Day yesterday, so it was a nice surprise when on arrival at church I was asked if the children would give out the bunches of daffodils, one to each of the ladies present. All ladies present get a bunch whether they’re a mother or not!

We had 6 children present yesterday and they thoroughly enjoyed delivering a bunch of daffodils to each of the ladies present. They are lovely daffodils just beginning to open.

Went to shop today, Morrisons had some lovely left over Mothering Sunday Flowers, had been £10 on Saturday  but  today £1.
I got two bunches and took them to The Cemetery nearby where the baby grandson and also son of my dear friend and neighbour from my previous home are buried.
Also in memory of my friend and her husband who are buried up at Crawshawbooth ,up the Rossendale Valley. I can’t get there so put a spray on the grave here for them. They were the grandparents of the baby .

The snowdrops are all over now but daffodils in abundance .
I enjoyed the little walk.

An ex pupil is buried there too, a great pity, and our ex Churchwarden who reached his 100 th Birthday had git Maundy money from The Queen and made her laugh with his ( true) story of the cardboard tanks in The Western Desert.
Made to fool the Germans, they were cardboard ,supply boxes painted and covered with netting but not too well !?They fooled the Germans.
His grave is totally neglected , and he still has family in Ramsbottom.
His name is still not on it and he died about ten years ago, what a shame.

Have been making little  newspaoer pots to plant seeds in.
They decompose in the soil when seedlings are planted out ,so no root disturbance.
Fold one side of a tabloid double sheet in half across.
Wind this round a small glass jar ,with the edge of the paper level with the bottom of the jar.
Tuck the extra paper in to the open end of the jar, pull paper off ,reverse the jar and put it in the paper cup and tamp down what you have folded in .
Pull out jar.
They are quite sturdy and the roots grow through when put in situ.

Well daughter’s Mothering Sunday card to me has still not come ,she posted it early in the week too, so it would arrive in time.

Much milder temperature    today , which is good,just got my energy bill Whew! Gas- for hearing and hot water -;

Hope all are O.K.
Viktoria.
