Title: Looking for Charlotte Austin
Post by: slewis on Wednesday 20 March 24 15:40 GMT (UK)
Hi  I am looking for Charlotte Austin born in 1853 Upton cum Chalvey, Buckinghamshire,  her parents were Willian Henry Austin and Jane.
I do know at some point Charlott or the family went to New Zealand.

Charlotte married Henry Butcher born 1854 Wallingford, Berkshire, now I have found Charlotte and Henry in New Zealand but I can not find a marriage there or in Engand

I have no idea when Charlotte or Henry left for NZ
If any one can help I would really appreciate it.
Kind regards Sue

Do you mean they are shown as husband and wife somewhere?

What is the last sighting of her in England?

If they had children when and where was the first one born?

She is 13yrs old on the 1871 census so born 1858 not 1853

EDIT

Ignore above - enumerator has put one of the slanting /  “counter figures” in front of the 3 making her 13 😡😡

Freebmd has a marriage in the Dec qtr 1871 Eton to either Henry Goddard or Reuben Gamble.  Have you already ruled it out?  Could the Butcher marriage be a second marriage?

I am assuming that this is the Charlotte to whom you refer?:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/170715558/charlotte-butcher

Someone (OP?) has uploaded a copy of both her death certificate and her probate to her page:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/170715558/charlotte-butcher/photo

Her death certificate gives an estimated year of birth of 1854, but her parents are not listed; their names are left blank.

It states she was born and married (c.1873) in Exton, England and that she came to New Zealand in approximately 1873.

How do you know that she is the Charlotte baptised in 1853 in Upton cum Chalvey? Is there another document that has more information?

Queenie  :)

Re my reply 4 - have you already ruled out the 1871 marriage?  No Goddard/Austin children born up to 1880 which could indicate emigration

Hi
Sorry I didn’t get back to you I found Charlotte baptism on family search and I didn’t see the 1871 marriage .
I had not found the probate record that does confirm the names of her children I just could not find them when I checked the NZ births
It may be just me but it’s not as easy to find records in New Zealand, but thank you all for your help
Kind regards Sue

You could rule out the 1871 marriage one way or the other but it would mean buying a copy of the marriage cert

The NZ obit for Charlotte Butcher says she died 1929 but doesn't give any age or origin.  A tree on Ancestry has her born Feltham  and living in Sussex in 1901!!

What documentary evidence do you have that Charlotte Butcher was nee Austin & was born in Bucks

If we assume the Goddard is correct….(and I am NOT saying it is, but worth thinking about)

There are these births in NZ

Registration Number   Family Name   Given Name(s)   Mother's Given
Name(s)   Father's Given
Name(s)
1874/22591   Goddard   Amelia   Charlotte   Henry
1876/11719   Goddard   Williamina   Charlotte   Henry
1878/8730   Goddard   Alice   Charlotte   Henry
1880/8481   Goddard   Harry   Charlotte   Henry
1883/4838   Goddard   James   Charlotte   Henry
1885/9296   Goddard   Mary Jane   Charlotte   Henry

And then just these Butcher births

1893/5645   Butcher   Charlotte   Charlotte   Henry
1890/12672   Butcher   Cicilia   Charlotte   Henry
1888/19182   Butcher   Thomas   Charlotte   Henry

Which if it was them, means a name change between 1885 & 1888

Alice Goddard b 1878 fits age wise for Alice White the wife of George Frederick. Alice died 1959 age 81. See NZ cem record set.

And Millicent Wood (address unknown) in the probate could be this marriage
1893/4040   Amelia   Butcher   Septimus Henry   Wood
(Find a grave https://www.rootschat.com/links/01t2j/)
Added to say…perhaps commonly known as Milly? Which would explain the Millicent.

James Goddard. Born 1883
James Butcher died 1917 age 34

(It is James’ daughter who is the Dolly Wallace of the probate (actually Madre/Madra Dolorosa)

Sarah Ann Warnock’s death?

1943/19481   Warnock   Sarah Ann   70Y

I can’t find a birth for her. I wondered if she was the Williamina b 1876, but age at death seems too far out.
On the other hand, cannot find a death for Williamina

Where do you see the Wallingford information?
Do you have a child’s birth certificate?

“Exton”,  on the death cert, is in Rutland

There is an 1872 marriage there of a Charlotte Austin to an Edward Mapperson in Rutland
I have to leave this for now, but can that Charlotte be ruled out?

Thank you all again kind regards Sue

I suspect this could be Charlotte’s death
MAPPERSON, CHARLOTTE       31
GRO Reference: 1874  D Quarter in BOURN  Volume 07A  Page 223

Added…so that rules her out as a contender for Charlotte BUTCHER
