Title: Ernst Marno
Post by: Poppy239 on Sunday 07 April 24 23:28 BST (UK)
Hello.  I cannot find this birth record, whatever I try!
Ernst Joseph Katejan Franz Marno born 1844 Vienna
Katejan sometimes spelt Cajetan
Possibly born 13th January
Possibly born in Breitensee

I have suspicions about how he may fit into my family.

Anyone who is used to reviewing Austrian records, I would be so grateful.

Best wishes
Poppy

There was no civil registration before 1938.
So first we need to know whether he was Catholic, Protestant or Jewish.

I have previously trawled Matricula.  I find that it’s a case of coming across the right church and then trawling some more! I always worry that I will miss something because I’m not familiar with the language and the lettering.

If he belongs to the family that I suspect he may do, I can narrow it down to the churches where his potential siblings were baptised.

Hello

This is so wonderful! How can I thank you enough :)

I am unable to read much of this text.  Is this something that you might be able to help with also?

I would hate to encroach on too much more of your time and so if not, I’m sure that someone else would be able to.

Once again - I have been after this information for years and I’m incredibly appreciative of your help!

That's great Dave. I can cope with some German, but it is old script that I am extremely bad at (and  not just when it is German).  So, finding stuff is one thing, deciphering it is another story ... LOL

Post by: TreeSpirit on Tuesday 09 April 24 13:57 BST (UK)
Hi Poppy,

I'd noticed that Ernest - despite his many travels - stayed registered with his family (Otto and "mum" Elise) in Bäckerstraße 20 during the 1870's and early 1880's.
In 1872 the brother of Caroline Elise Schindler died and a year later his probate mentioned that Elise's children would get some money. However, only Adolf, Christine, Valerie und Karoline Marno were mentioned and not Ernest and/or Otto. This had made me a bit suspicious and had wondered whether Elise might have been their stepmother, but could not confirm or deny this until those  St. Stephan baptisms had turned up.

This is all amazing - I’m not quite sure where they fit into my tree yet but I feel sure that they will and hope that any translations I get help me to finally work this out.  In the meantime, you are bringing this to life so wonderfully, thank you!! Did you ascertain this info from reading the German or am I missing a trick?

Yes it is from German

e.g.: regarding Alois Rudolf Schindler's 1872 death:

The Moravian marriage of 1839 shows Kajetan Marno was a widower. His first marriage was to the 17 year old Clara Kugler on 7 Oct 1832 Vienna Gumpendorf.

Here is his baptism 7 Aug 1799 at Tattenitz, Czech name Tatenice,  you will need a free Familysearch login if you don't already have one.

Name Latinised  to Cajetanus Georgius, of house 180

Thank you again for your continued interest in my family.  I can’t wait to see where this goes next.

Thanks to both of you.  I’m just going through the info you’ve so kindly brought to light for me.

I wonder whether I rather missed a trick on Matricula.  I don’t think my trawling was very effective and clearly it’s possible to zoom in using dates and things.  I must try to get the hang of it in order to cast my net wider to some other names in the tree.

Hi Fiddlerslass :)

I hadn’t realised where Oskar Schindler was from.  Now that you have drawn my attention to it, I feel that you are almost certainly correct.  I had assumed Schindler to be a common name and perhaps it is, but the location makes it incredibly likely that he’ll be on the tree somewhere and I will be working on this over the weekend now! Thanks for making me think about this - not sure how to feel!

I haven't really used that site, but it seems that it is like the Italian Antenati site where you can only do a screen print or open an image in a new tab. In both cases the result is what you can see on your screen only (re content and size). I'm sure there could be some trick for a better result, but I don't know what it could be.
