Title: James Carne
Post by: davegriggs on Monday 08 April 24 18:34 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for any information about James Carne who was drowned in the harbour on 30 Sept 1867 and buried 05/Oct/1867 St Sampsons Parish Church. Inquest ? or newspaper report? May have been living with Mary?
Thanks

Master's Certificate of Service states he was born in Battersea in 1819; there is a matching baptism for a James, son of Henry and Ann Carne, born on 10th December 1819 and baptised on 19th March 1820 in Battersea.

James Carne and Maria Bright married on Christmas Day 1847 in Dovercourt.

Maria divorced James (marriage dissolved) in 1865 on the grounds of adultery and desertion.

I can see James down as "master" on a vessel on the 1861 census. On the same page is a Mary Carne, born c.1831 in Portsmouth, who is down as "master's wife." Perhaps this was the lady with whom he committed the adultery?

Think this is his wife and daighter in 1861 - she may not have divorced him until 1865, but she'd already moved on

Robert Norman  30  b Bermondsey, cooper
Maria Norman   56  [36] Dress maker b Kelvedon
Emma Norman    11    Daughter b Harwich

Robert is a witness at Emma Carne's wedding

Robert Lloyd Norman, single
Maria Bright, divorced
Marriage     9 Dec 1867    St. Andrew, Peckham

Emma's future husband was a witness

Yes I have all this info, I am interested in Mary Ann Edwards who was at sea with James in 1861 down as his wife. How are you connected?
