Title: Neale/Neal/Neil
Post by: steph49 on Monday 26 September 05 10:50 BST (UK)
Hi
If any kind person is visiting Bedford library could they please look up the baptism of Samuel Neale/Neal/Neil born 1828 Westoning.  I would be eternally grateful if I could find out who his parents were.
 ???

Hi Steph

My local library has Westoning Parish Registers on fiche 1813 to about 1900.

I pass the library most Mondays so would be willing to look up the baptisms. I have just been trawing through Westoning for someone else - they are very easy to read so if he is there I will find him. If you give me more info on the family (from census, marriages etc) I will look up some others for you if I have time.

Regards

Criggy, you are a star!
I also have a William Neale/Neal born 1826 and a George Neal born 1837.  George is shown in 1841 with mother Sarah, widow.  All living Westoning 1841.
Whatever you can find out would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi Steph

Have made a note & will see what I can find. Sarah's husband obviously died between 1837 & 1841 so I'll check for him as well.

Criggy,

I'll thankyou in advance as the research you are doing for Steph regarding George Neal is on behalf of myself.

George and his mother Sarah are on a direct line of decent from my wife Gillian Neil (as she was).

Thanks,

Neil (Yes,  if I had taken my wife's name I would have been Neil Neil!)

Hi Neil

I see that this is your first post so welcome. It is a great site, I've found out lots of information about my family history from kind Rootschatters.

Did Samuel marry in Westoning? The marriages go up to 1905 so just let me know if there are any you want me to check out.

Regards

criggy

PS I once knew someone called Teresa Green ;D

Hi
Samuel Neale married Martha Carter 1856 Steppingley.  George married Agnes Franklin 1862 Tingewick Bucks.  Nothing found on William Neal other than born 1826.  Any info you can find most welcome.

Hi again

I checked Steppingly for Samuel's marriage but didn't find him. Thought I'd check in Westoning instead & there he was!

Samuel Neal 28 bachelor Laborer Westoning father William Neal Laborer
Martha Carter 24 spinster Straw platter Westoning father John Carter Labourer (Both x)

Thanks for all your hard work Criggy, I've managed to go back another generation and link into Steph's tree.  I have also come a step closer to a possible link back into the sixteenth century.

Hi
Many thanks Criggy, you've solved a lot of puzzles.
A bit of scandal - after William died Sarah had an illeg son called "Job Shearwood Neal".  Wonder whose that was?
Thanks again
Steph

Hi again

It's a small world. ;D

Quite a few years ago I did reciprocal research for a lady who lives in Reading.

I knew the name Job Shearwood as I had researched him before & just needed time to search out my old notes before I mentioned it. I have just found my notes. Samuel Neal is on the tree I drew up!

Please bear with me.

John Barnes = Alice Hall 15.10.1778 Toddington
John Barnes br 15.10.1778 Toddington
Alice Hall c 15.12.1754 dau of Thomas & Judith Hall br 27.12.1797, poor, Toddington
= (2) Jane - son John c 24.6.1798

John Barnes & Alice Hall's children all chr at Toddington:

*Thomas c 6.8.1780 br 18.11.1806 Westoning
George c 1.1.1783
Elizabeth c 12.2.1786
Ann c 25.12.1789 = James Elmer m 1.8.1809 Westoning
John c 9.12.1792
Fanny c 12.10.1796 br 7.3.1836 (36) Westoning = Job Shearwood 14.10.1816 Westoning by banns both left their mark (x), both of Westoning
Wit: x  Joseph Bunker & s Frances Crick
Job Shearwood c 24.1.1796 Millbrook br 3.12.1841 (45) Westoning son of (need my other file for that!)

*Thomas Barns = Sarah Deller 11.10.1798 Toddington
Sarah Deller c 14.8.1779 Sundon dau of (info elsewhere) br 17.12.1845 (71) Westoning
= (2) George Aldridge c 1.12.1771 Hanslope, Bucks br 22.12.1837 (66) Westoning Lab

Children of Thomas Barns & Sarah (nee Deller)

Alice bn 6.5.1802 c 25.7.1802 Westoning br 19.9.1802 Westoning
Sarah bn 24.11.1805 c 26.1.1806 Westoning = William Neal of Highham Gobion (you have details of this).

George Aldridge & Sarah had 4 more children.
Job Shearwood & Fanny had 9 children.

Will send further details another time.

In other words Job Shearwood was Sarah’s Uncle! He married Fanny, the sister of Sarah's father Thomas.

Now it’s just possible that Sarah’s son was named after him or he could be the father of course. He was only 9 years older than Sarah & Fanny had died the previous year!

Hope you can sort it all out!

Regards

Criggy,

Thanks for all your research.

I've had Sarah Deller/Barnes in my files for some time without realising there was a connection into the Neal tree!

According to my records George and Sarah went on to have four children:

Mary b 1810
James b 1823
William b 1815 = Mary b 1810 who went on to have 6 children
Edward b 1813 d 1869 = Ann Eames b 1814 d 1880

Interestingly Edward and Ann had two children Henry and Lucy.  Lucy went on to marry a Charles Shearwood (1845 - 1928).

I was contacted a couple of years ago by a decendant of the Shearwoods with this and other details about this branch of the Aldridge family, was this the same person?

I do have a lot more on the Aldridge branch if you are interested.

Incidentially William G Neal(Neil) Wiliam Neals grandson also married into the Aldridge faimily marrying Sarah J Aldridge b 1863 daughter of Joseph Aldridge b 1838 or 1842 and Sarah Aldridge b 1837 Hatford, Walworth.

Joseph's father was William Aldridge b 1799 = Ann b 1800.  I would love to know whether William and George Aldridge were brothers.

Criggy I would be very grateful for any other info you may have on the Adridges.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

Neil

Criggy,

If you have a moment could you look up Ann Neal in Higham Gobion in 1841.  I am hoping that Ann may have been William Neal's (father of George) mother.

Hi Neil

I'm afraid I don't have access to Higham Gobion parish registers.

If you check out this link it will show you what my local library has in the way of parish registers.

You could post for the 1841 census for Higham Gobion Neils on the Bedfordshire board. You may be lucky & find relatives or clues.

The following link will tell what I'm able to check out for you.

These are the only Neals I can see in Higham Gobion in 1841

HO107/004-12 folio 4A
Higham Gobion
Isaac Neal 30 ag lab
James Neal 40 ag lab
Thomas Neal 9
Ann Neal 70
All born in county

As you gave no indication of Ann's age I've no idea if this is the one you're looking for.

David

Many thanks, David.  Yes, this would be the family.  Ann's first born, Hannah, was born in 1799 so that would be right.
The Thomas is intriguing - too young to be Ann's child.  Pause for thought ....

Thanks again, you've been a great help
