Some more Oliver Wills might be mentioned here (scroll down to Londonderry listings)-
http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/TABLES/OLIVERs-Probates.html

I've Olivers in my connection and I remember Brian Mitchell of the Derry Genealogy Centre mentioning years ago they'd done research on the family for a client and were able to trace them back much farther than most families (can't remember date).

Thanks aghadowey

Would be interesting to know.
Lislane is our closest link, found some that went to America in contact with them now.  Have relatives in Aghadowey  as well going back 100 years married into Cunningham's.  Have the Oliver's in Lislane going back till 1663 but hard to tie them in up till 1800s.

I know the Cunningham/Oliver connection in Aghadowey (everyone is related to everyone else here) but my Oliver connection is a bit more recent.

Very good.  Had rang Brain at the Derry Genealogy Centre two years ago, been meaning to call but haven't called yet.  Trying to get all info sorted that I have then call.  There was Oliver's about Englishtown.

Do you mean Robert John Oliver who married Elizabeth Henry?

Not sure who those Oliver's are, just found them when searching.  Problem back then they used a lot of the same names, hard to determine if they were form Limavady.

Hello Oliver Group
I am in search of documented ancestral line of Olivers from Lislane and or Londonderry area who left their home land for the Americas around 1799 - 1800.  We have DNA results connecting our American Olivers to their Irish forefathers unfortunately, we do not have documented departures or arrivals nor - more importantly, given names for the head of family and his wife.   All we do know is our GG Grandfathers name was Martin and according to census records and county histories he was born on ship in route to America in 1800.  One historical account states that his mother died when he was quite young and his father gave him up to strangers. Writings also suggest that Martins father fought in the War 1812 and his name has been listed as James as well as John, Nathan, Matthew Nelson,
Additional questions to the group:
In the late 1790's in Ireland, when a family chose migrate to another country was it required to file for permission with the local government office or were there any formal documents required  to sale to a foreign land? If so, where would these files be located?
Lastly, what Port would a family depart from when sailing from Ireland to America?  Would they depart from England?
Thanking you in advance for any assistance or insight you can provide.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

 A few comments-

Writings also suggest that Martins father fought in the War 1812 and his name has been listed as James as well as John, Nathan, Matthew Nelson,
Nathan would have been rarely used in Ireland at that period and Nathaniel, even though a Biblical name, also not that common.

In the late 1790's in Ireland, when a family chose migrate to another country was it required to file for permission with the local government office or were there any formal documents required  to sale to a foreign land? If so, where would these files be located?
No permission was needed to leave the U.K. so there won't be any paperwork to follow up on. The family may, however, gone to America as part of a larger group who settled in the same area at least for the first generation so it's always good to explore the local history for clues.

Lastly, what Port would a family depart from when sailing from Ireland to America?  Would they depart from England?
Lots of choices which often depended on cost of fares, if other friends or relatives were travelling, etc. Most likely ports probably Londonderry (city), Glasgow, Belfast, Liverpool...

Thank you for your prompt response.
Not living Ireland i have no idea if there are church records, census records and or tax lists that may provide names of Olivers who lived in the Balteagh area from 1750 to 1800.  Can you provide any insight as to where I might search or to whom I could write for this type of information?
Thanks again.
Sandy

A couple of things in this thread caught my attention and seems to support my theory I have ties to Aughansallagh.  First is the Cunningham connection mentioned and that our first Kincaid here in New Brunswick, Canada named his son Henry Oliver.  That said, I think I have a tidbit to help.

On 10 April 1732, John Kinkead and his wife Jane Kinkead alias Noble, both of Aughansallagh sold to Robert Scott of Little Derry (which is the townland on the north side of Aughansallagh) their leasehold interest in the third part of Ballynahery then in the possession of James Martin.  The instrument was witnessed by Matthew Scott of Little Derry, William Scott of Largy and Hugh Forsyth of Newtown Limavady [ROD no. 62733, book 89, page 178 registered 31 January 1737].

Perhaps this James Martin ties in with the James Martin you are looking for as Ballynahery is just a little north of Aughansallagh - both being on the east side of Drumsum road.

Would love to see anyone with old ties to Aughansallagh take the Family Finder DNA test at Family Tree DNA in Houston in the hope of finding shared dna.

These are also my ancestors! We still have a Samuel Oliver on the farm on Lislane up from the church. His brother John lives close by too. I am looking so hard to find info from there. I have a lot on the son Robert who married Ellen Andrews and they brought their family to the USA. He had brothers and sisters who stayed on the farm.
There was a sister Margaret they called Peggy, she married an Irwin/Irvine. Sister Matilda married David Boyd. A brother William, and Samuel. This is all stuff I am putting together, But any help, info direction I would appreciate. We can share. I have copies of some wills. Feel free to email me. (*)  Thank you. Cyndy

We seem to have mutual connections but remember not to post details of living people  ;)

I remember hearing from Brian Mitchell (Derry Genealogy Centre) years ago that they'd traced the Oliver family for a client (probably overseas) and that it was probably the furthest back they'd been able to trace a local family so there must be records somewhere- many of these records could now be online.

Though many decades have  I been searching for ancestors, I feel the more Novice as the search gets further from my own locale in NW Ohio, USA.  This I know: yDNA markers give me the potential for ancestors in Londonderry, Ireland and Ayershire, Scotland.  Circumstantially; the males Christian names in my family repeat generation upon generation .... Samuel, James, John, William, etc.  The arrived in the Colonies of America, possibly Boston, prior to 1750, as at least .

Their is some DNA and research notes that indicate a strong possibility the the Lislane, Balteagh, Londonderry OLIVERs are related, however, the connercting Heads for the connection are missing.

Among these posting there is mention of a Brian Mitchell of Derry Genealogical Centre did some research on the Lislane, Balteagh, Londonderry Family.  If at all possible, I would enjoy making contact with this Gentleman.

In addition, I would enjoy contact with anyone who has knowledge of this/these branches of OLIVERs.

I would certainly be pleased to share any research information that I do have.

     Respectfully,
     Liam, aka Bill
