Title: birth - Thomas H Brew
Post by: ju1 on Monday 03 October 05 23:45 BST (UK)
Looking for the parents of Thomas h Brew born 1877/78 Ramsey, he was 3 on the 1881 census at his grandparents, Thomas and Ellen Cubbon.
I am trying to find who his family are.

Thanks, reagards, Ju.

Hi Ju,

It would be interesting to know what information you already have on the Brew/Kaighin/Cubbon families and what sources you have for that information.

From the posts you have submitted I am guessing your connections are from Margaret E Brew to her father Thomas H Brew.  If this is the case then this 1901 census looks promising:

Maughold, St Paul's, Ramsey
Barrack Yard, No 1
Thomas Kaighin, Head, Wid, 56, Fisherman, Ramsey
Joseph Kaighin, Son, S, 24, Fisherman, Ramsey
Thomas H Brew, S in law, M, 24, Painter, Ramsey
Catherine R Brew, Daur, M, 27, Ramsey
(next page, same household)
Thomas H Brew, G son, 2, Ramsey
Margaret E Brew, G daur, 4mths, Ramsey

Do you have any evidence to connect this Thomas H Brew with the one living with Thomas and Ellen Cubbon in 1881 other than it being the most likely match?  I would suggest that if you are sure that the Thomas H in the above 1901 census is your man that you get a copy of his marriage certificate (BREW, Thomas Henry  30 Oct 1898  D  onc  52  KAIGHIN, Catharine Robina  -source: www.lawsons.ca) which you apply for through the Registrar general http://www.gov.im/registries/general/civilregistry/welcome.xml or you could try the LDS films for C of E marriages in IOM for the dates 1884-1911.  These films apparently have all the details that would normally appear on a certificate.  This will confirm his father's name and occupation.

My guess is that he might be the son of Rebecca Cubbon and Caesar Brew (Marriage:  30 DEC 1876  Lezayre, Isle Of Man -source:IGI).

But I can't find any birth records for Thomas H Brew (tried IGI and Brian Lawson's birth index http://www.lawsons.ca/births/b_bir.html) even though I can find other births for this couple which is odd.  I also find their family in 1881 and 1891 without Thomas H (Thomas H is still with Thomas and Ellen Cubbon in 1891) and then in 1901 Rebecca is widowed living with some children and her mother Eleanor Cubbon.

If Rebecca and Caesar are his parents it seems strange that there is no birth record for Thomas H and that he was the only child sent to live with the grandparents even though he was born after their marriage and they have another son one year younger with them in 1881.  But perhaps there are good reasons for this

I will post transcriptions of the census records I found for these families but I would urge you to confirm your Thomas H's parents before taking any census information you get as evidence.

Cheers,
Ruth

Thanks so much for your information and advice, this is my step mothers family, her grandmother was Margaret Elenor brew born 1900 ramsey, she knew Margarets parents were called Thomas and Catherine and she knew catherines maiden name was Kaighin so I'm confident about the 1901 census data being the correct family.
But beyond that I am not sure! The Thomas H Brew on the 1881 was the best match so I was working on that!!
The only other bit of information my step mother knew was that somewhere in the Brew history their had been an Italian connection, so I am curious about the name Ceasar Brew, do you know if this name was used much on the island?
I will keep the information you have kindly given me on file but obviously as you advice I need futher proof that Thomas H Brew in 1881 is the right one.

Thank you so much for your help,
Kind regards, Ju

Caesar was quite a common name on the Island (strange as it may seem).

I posted the census records for Caesar and Rebecca's family for 1891 and 1901 in reply to your other posting.

Once you get confirmation of Thomas H Brew's father's name from the marriage certificate/entry I'd be happy to do more census checks for the relevant families (using Ancestry.co.uk I have 1861/71/81/91/1901 for England and IOM).

For the moment this is probably the Kaighins in 1881:

RG11/5601, District 4, Folio 4, Page 8, Household schedule number 152
Maughold, Ramsey, St Paul's
1 Cannells Court
Thomas Kaighin, Head, Mar, 35, Fisherman, Isle of Man
Margaret, Wife, 30, Isle of Man
Joseph, Brother, Unm, 20, Fisherman
Thomas, Son, 10, Isle of Man
Robina, Daur, 8, Isle of Man [this is your Catherine R I think]
Emily, Daur, 6, Isle of Man
Joseph, Son, 4, Isle of Man
John, Son, 1, Isle of Man

And in 1891:

RG12/4685, District 3, Folio 42, Page 1, Household schedule number 3
Maughold, Ramsey, St Paul's district
3 Market St
Thos Kaighin, Head, M, 45, Fisherman, Ramsey
Marg, Wife, M, 43, Laxey
Thos, Son, Sing, 20, Moulder, Ramsey
Emily, Daur, 16, Ramsey
Jos, Son, 14, Ramsey
Jno, Son, 12, Ramsey
Fredk, Son, 7, Ramsey

I think Margaret might be MARGARET KANEEN who married Thomas Kaighin on 10 NOV 1870 in Maughold (source: IGI).  But I can't find them together in 1871 census.  I also can't find birth records for the children (except perhaps Emily and Catherine as Emily Jane and Catherine Lavinia [possibly a misreading of Robina] on the IGI online) after checking both the IGI online and Brian Lawson's registered birth index.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Cheers,
Ruth

I do remember it being difficult to find out exactly how one requests a certificate from IOM - and being from Australia it was made more difficult by the fact they didn't have credit card facilities and it would have cost me as much to get a bank cheque in pounds as the certificate itself!  In the end I went through a certificate service person (I'm sorry, I can't remember who I used).

I think you might just have to contact them to find out how to do it - they definately do not have an online service, more's the pity.  I'm pretty sure they sent me a paper form to fill in.

Alternatively, if you have a local LDS centre, you could see if the marriage entry appears in the parish register - I think this is the most likely film:
"Register of Church of England baptisms, burials and marriages in: Kirkonchan ... Marriages 1886-1911 ..." Film no. 454980.  According to Brian's site these registers have the same information you would expect to find on a certificate (but I have never seen these films so I couldn't say for sure).

Cheers,
Ruth
