One of my ancestors is a Denholm...
She was Henereta (could be Henrietta and is just typed into Scotlands people wrong) Denholm and married John White.  They lived in Dunbar and had a child named Allison, who had 3 illegitimate children.  She was born in Stow as far as I can see.
Denholm isn't a very uncommon name though...  ???

Hi Bryso

We're all eager to help but need a bit more detail such as WHEN ?
If events are too recent they will not yet be available on-line on scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Rough dates will do for marriages and births. Exact dates would be a bonus  ;D

Hi Bryso

I used IGI for a quick look between 1820-1855 and there are a few dotted around.
Only 2 in Stenton:
Isabella b Dec 1840  to James Denholm & Helen Paterson
Elizabeth b Jul 1845  to James Denholm & Helen Isabella Paterson

Tranent:
Janet b Nov 1825  to James Denholme & Helen Smith

Oldhamstocks:
Isabella b 1847 to James Denholm & Sarah Cockburn
Jean b 1827  Agnes b 1833 to David Denholm & Sarah Wright
Mary b 1830 to George Denholm & Sarah Atchison

Dirleton:
Catharine b 1821 to William Denholm & Marrion Cockburn

Innerwick:
Isabel b 1831 to Thomas Denholm & Isabel Macracket
Jane b 1854 to Henry Denholm & Janet Burnside
Sarah b 1822 to Henry Denholm & Margaret Fortune

North Berwick:
Robina Alison b  1849 Anne b 1847 to William Denholm & Catherine Nelson Barry
Elizabeth b 1847 to Alexander Denholm & Jane Coffer

I found none for the same time period in Haddington, Pencaitland, Ormiston. There will be matching marriages no doubt but I didn't have time to continue.

I had to respond to your post because I was born in Ormiston and feel loyal to East Lothian and my brother worked for Denholm Shipping. Couldn't refuse, could I

Hi Delphinum

I meant to answer your post at the same time but got carried away.

I found no Denholm births in Dunbar for 1820-1855 which was as far as I looked. I only looked at the Tyne valley parishes. There may be others which you could find using the 'Hugh Wallis counties ' search.

Before you go giving scotlandspeople the blame for mistyping Henrietta's name, just wait till you see some of the spelling on the original certificates and Register entries.
There was no such thing as 'proper spelling' 150 years ago. People wrote down what it sounded like and if the person giving the information had a broad country accent then the poor registrar had to make the best of it. He couldn't say "could you spell that, please!" because a lot of folk back then couldn't spell or write.
I think you are fairly new to genealogy. Don't be tempted to 'correct' spelling of names and places. Record exactly what is on original documents. It may be the clue you need to go back another generation or find another relative.
Sorry for the lecture!

Hi Bryso

Have you used the HughWallis search facility?
  free-pages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/Query (http://free-pages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/Query)
I'm not sure if all the site address is there but you could find it fromRootsweb.
It gives all the Scottish counties and allows you to select in each parish a time span for births (number sequences beginning with C) or marriages (M) put in the surname in the box -top right and any results will come up in the usual IGI format with batch numbers.
If you have patience its great for tracking down other siblings from a family. I use it all the time - its free of course!
Not all births/marriages were recorded unfortunately but its as good a record as you'll get for free!!!
Sometimes place names are rather oddly spellt but often the transcriber didn't know the area and guessed.
Any other help you need just ask

I have just made contact with " extended family" in Innerwick, Fife, Canada and West Lothian.  My Denholm's go back as far as 1747 in this area.  We have a "gathering" in August of this year.  I intend to post an indepth report and request for other surnames linked to me.

I am tracing any links of Denholm/Denham to the following:

Blyth.
Lyal.
Nisbet.
McKenzie.
France.
Scott.
Hope.
Bisset.
Gibson.
Anderson.

James Denholm and Jean Nisbet I believe they were the parents of the Robert Denholm Below.

Robert Denholm was born 28 June 1747, he married Margaret Lyal on 12 May 1775 in Cockburnspath.

Son of the above Robert, was Robert Denholm married Jean/Jane McKenzie on 12 May 1797, Cocksburnpath.

My GGG/Grandfather John Denholm was the son of the above (one of twins his brother was James)  who married Agnes Davidson on 22 May 1829 in Oldhamstocks.

I've just joined Rootschat and happened along your Denholm post.  My great-great grandmother was born Isabella Denholm on 26 March 1820 in Innerwick, daughter to Henry Denholm (b. 14 May 1786 Innerwick) and Margaret Fortune (b. 20 Jan 1793 in Longborough Berwick).  I have found two siblings for Isabella - Sarah (1822) and Henry (1827).  Henry Sr. father was Alexander Denholm and mother was Selkirk Bell ( wonderful name).

Do you have access to the Scotland Census?  There is one particular Denholm family and descendants in Alva from 1861 to 1901.  There are many other Denholms in Stirlingshire, some of whom were born in Dunbar.

Hi Tom,

All my line of Denholms moved to Fife.  George Anderson Denholm was my 1st cousin twice removed.  Born Hill of Beath 15 Aug 1915.  A professional footballer who play for both Scottish and English football.  I am told he died  1998 or 1999, he lived in the Edinburgh area.  And possibly married to El Shearer.

The Denholm line goes back to Oldhamstock, Cockburnspath and Innerwick.  So maybe George is related down the line.

Hello Andy,
George Anderson Denholm married Helen McIntyre Shearer in 1939 at Dalgetty Bay. Info isn't online. Good to know you are back on the trail. Have posted message for you on Berwickshire Forum.

Hello Tom,
Andy and I share the same 2xGGF, John Denholm. I am descended from a son of his first marriage, Andy from his second marriage, hence me from Tranent and Andy's direct relatives from Fife. The elder children from the first marriage stayed in Tranent when John, his second wife and younger children moved to Hill of Beath.

Hi mamad,

Small world, I was born in Tranent in grandmothers house, at Ormiston Crescent, top of Northfield. My mum and dad stayed in Cockenzie at the time, but dad was down Prestonlinks pit on night shift, so she stayed with mother during late pregnancy for safety reasons.

Hi Mags

This is fantastic, thanks again.

George (1st cousin twice removed) is also on the following website http://www.enfa.co.uk/ regarding his time career at York City. I have been in contact with the webmaster at this site to offer them a photo of George, now I can give them further information.

Would you hazard a guess that the following maybe George "Died 26 March 1997, Cremated 4 April 1997 at Seafield, Edinburgh".

Do you know if they had any children?

Hello Andy,
Can't confirm any children and deceased online blank out living informants.

Hello Tom,
I was Robertson Avenue(the half block that was partly demolished due to pit workings). It was exciting as a child to have the "cooncil lorry" loading our furniture and moving us out when the cracks were found. We moved to Ross Crescent and then down to Coalgate Avenue where my dad stayed until his death. That was over 40 years in Coalgate Avenue! My grandparents lived in Coalgate too. Coalgate, as you know is just around the corner from Northfield. Had a lad in my class at school lived in Ormiston Crescent. For a time my dad worked at Meadowmill(didn't have any baths there so came home dirty), then Cowdenfoot and Monktonhall.

Hello,

Had a quick look at scotlandspeople.  As your user name is MacWatt, I saw the death of Isabella Munro Denholm, other name MacWatt, died Elgin in 1985, age 80.
Her birth cert. shows she was born at 26 Albion Road, Edinburgh 24? Dec 1905(writing's not clear on cert.) Parents: Robert Denholm and Jamesina McLeod.
Robert and Jamesina married 27 Nov 1903 at Edinburgh. His parents were Robert Denholm, Wood Sawyer, and Janet Wood. Her parents were John McLeod, Fisherman(deceased) and Marion McKay previously McLeod ms Munro.
If you access the 1911 census on scotlandspeople, you'll get Robert's birthplace.

Apologies if I have gone up the wrong path and made wrong assumptions.

Hi Elizabeth,

Had difficulty finding Martha and Georges marriage, eventually found using Martha Denham (not Denholm) and George Loundton. He was a labourer and both lived in parish of Dunbar.

Found on FreeReg and LDS Familysearch sites. However had no luck finding children of them. I was a bit confused with "Ann was the mother of Martha born about 1833 illegitimate" Are you sure this statement is correct, I didn't think it tied up with the marriage Martha Denham and George Loundton.

Hi Glitter123,

Not sure if your query is related to the previous one, however, I can see the banns/marriages called in Ochiltree and Coylton in Ayrshire, and also the baptism in Innerwick that you mention. How do you know it is the same person? Have you got evidence that family moved from East Lothian to Ayrshire?
