Title: John HOADL(E)Y
Post by: Yip0905 on Wednesday 12 October 05 22:42 BST (UK)
Hi all

I wonder if there is anyone out there that could point me in the right direction?

I am at a brickwall with my ggg grandfather, John Hoadley.
Here is what I have found out about him:

1851 census - aged 17, born in Hellingly
1854 marriage cert - aged 21, father Henry, a farmer
1861 census - aged 27, born in Eastdean
1871 census - aged 38, born in Eastbourne
1881 census - aged 50, born in Rotherfield
1891 census - aged 56, born in Rotherfield
1901 census - aged 66, born in Rotherfield

As you can see, there are conflicting ages and birth places, but I know that each census entry is the same John Hoadley.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can find him amongst all this???

Any clues gratefully received   ;D

Hi yip

First of all, welcome to rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards

I would not worry about the ages as they differ only very slightly - if you take the first age of 17 and continue it through, you arrive at 67, which is only 1 year out on the census information.

1851 census - aged 17, born in Hellingly                       17
1854 marriage cert - aged 21, father Henry, a farmer
1861 census - aged 27, born in Eastdean                     27
1871 census - aged 38, born in Eastbourne                  37
1881 census - aged 50, born in Rotherfield                   47
1891 census - aged 56, born in Rotherfield                   57
1901 census - aged 66, born in Rotherfield                   67

No problems as far as I can see

Hi Chris

Thanks for the welcome.

Perhaps I should have made my query a bit more specific - what I am trying to find is a record of John's baptism.

There is nothing on the IGI that ties up to the information I have gleaned, and quite a few years ago I checked the Hellingly PR's, to no avail. The Rotherfield PR's have no John HOADL(E)Y's either.

It would seem that John didn't know where he was born, which doesn't bode well for me!   :'(

Ah well, who said genealogy was easy??!!!

I guess you have the 1881 listing for Henry Hoadley?

Henry HOADLEY      Head      M      Male      67      East Chiltington, Sussex,     Farmer 116 Acres Employ 2 Lab
Elizabeth HOADLEY      Wife      M      Female      65      Chailey, Sussex,      Farmers Wife
Esther BATCHELOR      Dau      M      Female      45      Chailey, Sussex,

    Dwelling     Tanyard Farm
     Census Place    Fletching, Sussex, England
    Piece / Folio     1055 / 81
    Page Number     1

OOPS! Think maybe this is not your Henry - found this on http://www.thesussexweald.org/P3.asp?PID=4552DaneHl

1851   Farmer   Henry Hoadley, M, Head, married, age 37, born East Chiltington, Sussex, employs 4 people

Anything to do with your Hoadleys?

As your John was 17 in 1851 - one can assume he was about 7 on the 1841 census.

I have checked the 1841 census for the 4 places that John gave for his birth place in later census

Hellingly - No entries for Hoadley or variants
East Dean - 3 entries of Hoadley - but non of them has an Henry or a 7 year old John
Eastbourne - No Hoadley entries
Rotherfield - No entries found, but the pages are not very brilliant on this one, ink has bled into the paper - but nothing looks like Hoadley.

Incidentally, where was he married?

Gougy mentioned that an Henry gave his birth place as East Chiltington

checked the 1841 for John, son of Henry; but although there was one entry for HOADLY and 5 entries for HOADLEY - non of them matched your criteria.

Sorry about that

here's another Henry b. 1805, married c. 1835, could just about be John's father, but no sign of the elusive fella!!

1841 Census
Pick Pale Farm , Burnt Oak Rd., Crowborough

Henry Hoadley, M, Head, age 36, born Sussex
Anne Hoadley, F, [Wife], age 33, born Sussex
Susanna Hoadley, F, [Daughter], age 5, born Sussex
Henry Hoadley, M, [Son], age 3, born Sussex
Allis Hoadley, F, [Daughter], age 1, born Sussex

This Henry's father was Henry too, b. abt 1781 Rotherfield married Hannah bc. 1785 in abt. 1804 Rotherfield  - check out Hoadleys, Hoadlys, Hoads, Hodes, etc. etc. at http://www.theweald.org/N10.asp?NId=149072

I would be concerned that Rotherfield is not exactly close to Eastbourne.   In fact it is miles away!  Andrea

Could it be Easebourne mistranscribed?

That would create a chaos!   It is in West Sussex and even more miles away.   Interesting thought though.  It has happened before.
I have now looked at the census records from 1861 on and it is obviously the same man with wife Maria born Benenden Kent in all the records.  The 1881 has ditto marks for Rotherfield so may have been an enumerator's error but the 91 and 1901 actually have it written out.   Very odd.   It probably means a visit to Lewes Record office if at all possible and just trawling through all the local parish registers until you find him.  Otherwise getting the films from your local LDS centre.  A long job ahead!

Hi all

Thanks for all the input  :)

That Henry is a possibility - I'll have to check that out.

With the Eastbourne, I have had a look at the original (through Ancestry) and it definately looks like Eastbourne not Easebourne to me.

As you say Sillgen, a long job ahead!

Once again, thank you all.
