On this glorious spring afternoon, greetings from Australia!
I am trying to find our Scutchings family...and it is proving to be a challenge!
Today I received the death certificate for Benjamin Scutchings and his place of birth is given as "Island of Jersey, Channel Islands." He died in 1911 at the age of 76, so would have been born circa 1835/36. His parents were James Scutchings and Jane Hewitt or Marrett.
This is the most information I have had so far about where this family lived prior to their arrival in South Australia in about 1845..
I would appreciate any help or suggestions that would assist in this search. How would I go about identifying his actual place of birth?
Thanks
Elsie

Hi Carol!
Pleased to have you make contact. As Scutchings is not a "common" surname, I would have to think there was a connection somewhere on this tree. The trick will be to find it.
I am trying to identify from where our Scutchings family lived before emigrating. So far I have been able to identify one child, Benjamin, as having been born on the Island of Jeresy (written on his death certificate) and I am waiting for a copy of the death certificate for his mother, Jane. It should arrive at the end of the week. I am slowly purchasing certificates in the hope of gleaning more clues.
The family members I have are James and Jane (parents) and Mary Ann, Charles Edward, Benjamin and Ellen. They arrived in Australia circa 1845.
Regards
Elsie

Hi Elsie!
It will be a long job but here's the site of 1841 census - it's not indexed but very rewarding when you find something!

Good luck!

Thanks Annie. Just an update..I have learnt today that two children from the Scutching family were born on the Island of Jersey. Hopefully I'll find them.
One question, can you tell me which month of 1841 the census was taken, for that is the year the family left to emigrate to New Zealand?
Thanks
Elsie
