Can anyone help.
All I have is a marriage certificate which states that Henry Prosser Evans married Margaret Alice Taylor on 11.10.1905 in the Registry Office Pembroke.
He states his age as 29, and was a corporal in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry, based at Pembroke Dock. His fathers name was John (deceased).
I have managed to trace Margarets family, but don't have a clue as to the birth place of Henry.
I have been unable to find him on any census that I have been able to access.
I'm new to this so if anyone has an idea on how to proceed it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Sheila

The name Prosser caught my attention because my Harries family from Solva have a link to some Prossers by marriage. So I had a look in the 1881 census for any Prossers around that age and found one that seemed like a a shot in the dark at first, but...
RG11 5418 / 41, pg 3
Haverfordwest St Thomas, Pembroke, Wales
Merlins Hill
John PROSSER Head M Male 33 Haverfordwest Commercial Traveller
Hannah M. PROSSER Wife M Female 28 Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales
William H. PROSSER Son U Male 2 Haverfordwest
Mary E. PROSSER Daut U Female 7 m Haverfordwest
Ellen REID Servant U Female 14 Haverfordwest Domestic
I know the age is off by 3 years and the name isn't exact (don't know what "H" stands for). But the fathers name is John and if you check the IGI database (www.familysearch.org) you'll find a John Prosser of Haverfordwest death in 1897.
A search at Free BMD gives us some more proof that I think you'll like. If you look for the marriage of this John Prosser to Hannah in Haverfordwest you find their marriage in 1877. And guess what: Hannah's full name is Hannah Maria EVANS.
I suggest posting an 1891 census look-up request on the RootsChat census look-up board for this family and see what you get. Looks like the family stayed in Haverfordwest until 1897. Or at least, the father did.
Happy Hunting!

Hi Jeff,
I'm a bit confused ...
Sheila is looking for a Henry Prosser EVANS and you seem to have found a possible Henry Evans PROSSER ??
You've been most ingenious but I think it is not going to be the one she is after?
Cheers,
Ros

If an exhaustive search for "Henry Prosser Evans" turns up nothing, it may be time to think out of the box a little. But Ros has a good point - it's probably too early to consider someone like the "William H Prosser" I found. Evans is a very common name, as are John, Henry... and William. It may take a while to find him. You may have to look into info relating to his military career to learn more.

I tried in 1901:
I think this is your guy:
Henry Evans 26 Multry Glamorganshire Cornwall Falmouth Soldier Corporal N G Artillery
Multry could be Merthyr Tydfil - it was often abbreviated ( not to Multry though !!)..however there was one Henry Evans b each Q of 1875 in M T, so its still tricky - the 1881 Census has about 6 Henrys to choose from.
His 1901 Census record will probably only show him in barracks !
just in case not:
Henry Evans 23 Middlesex Clerkenwell London Soldier
Henry Evans 24 Denbigh Wales Berkshire Private Grenadier Guards
Good luck

Thankyou to everyone for their input.

Hi Sheila,
Have just found RootsChat! My name is Bryan Evans. I note that you were looking for Henry Prosser Evans. HP is my grandfather. Surprisingly, not a lot of obvious information is actually available. Problem is that as far as I know, apart from an inscription on his gravestone, and my father's baptism and wedding certificates , he was never referred to as Henry Prosser...and there are many, many Henry Evans's of the right vintage. Please contact for more info.
Best wishes, Bryan

The name Prosser caught my eye as I have a Prosser in my family tree married in Pembroke but born in Taunton.
The other think that caught my eye was the The King's Shropshire Light Infantry as I have a photo on Roots chat of my ancestor who was in that division and married my great aunt.

I always thought having a middle name that is a surname is usually the mother's maiden name.
There is this marriage
Marriages Q4 1877 John Evans + Mary Ann Prosser Merthyr T 11a 660
Which would fit in with John Evans being born c1879

Hi Steven
Many thanks for the link to your post .... it makes interesting reading .... you never know my Henry might even be on the photo ....
Since posting my enquiry in 2005 I have found his parents and marriage .... I now have his birth certificate and his parents names .... he was born in Herefordshire of all places .... and married in Pembroke Dock the same year as your chap ..... I ended up getting his army record to find all this out ....
Once again many thanks ... off now to have another look at the photo .....

I am looking for information for my brother in law regarding his grandfather Henry Prosser Evans. We know that he was born in Herefordshire and was in Kings Shropshire Light Infantry in 1911 ???
-
I am looking for any information regarding the son of Henry Prosser Evans - He was born in 1908 and his name was Edwin Thomas Evans. He married in York for the 2nd time in 1938. He was in the army during the war and was divorced about 1945.

Hi,
I am Bryan Evans and I am a grandson of Henry Prosser Evans. I can give you a detailed history of HPE and much of the family and ancestry. Edwin Thomas (Ted) was my uncle and I can give some info on him as well. My father was William Alick Evans. I guess your brother in law must be a cousin of mine. I have found a number of lost cousins which I can also update you with. I enclose my e.mail address as it is easier to communicate by such. Looking fwd to hearing from you,
Best regards
Bryan

Hi Everyone
I have just discovered Rootschat as a result of a last-resort Google search for Henry Prosser Evans, who married my great-aunt Margaret Alice Taylor in 1905 in Pembroke. I had previously found him only in the 1911 census at a barracks in Shropshire, which gave his place of birth as Hereford; I knew that he had been a Sergeant in the KSLI, and that he later moved to Shropshire/Liverpool where (most of) his ten children were brought up. Unfortunately the ages given in the census, marriage cert and death record do not match exactly. Other posters have said that they have his parents' details (father = John) plus other information. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi algobr, wellcome to Rootschat
Are you just looking for HP or are you looking for MA as well as I have loads of stuff on both of them.
Birth, Marriage and Death certificates plus census details and Army records (incidentally HP lied about his age when he joined up that is why the dates never quite tie up)
You say Margaret Alice was you Great Aunt, which of her siblings do you descend from?
Cheers for now

Hi sre, and thanks for your swift response.
My grandmother was Evaline (various spellings) Maud Taylor b 1887 Pembroke Dock, the younger sister of Margaret Alice Taylor, whom I met briefly when she visited my family's home in Smethwick ~1965. My mother is Evaline Amelia Brown née John(s) b 1921 Pembroke Dock (still living). A few days ago I received a message on Ancestry from a lady named Kathryn Hughes, whose father was James Cyril Evans (1921 - 1986), one of the ten children of Henry Prosser Evans and Margaret Alice Taylor. She told me that she was a novice at family history and asked for any information re. HPE & MAT. Since I had already extensively researched the Taylor family I was able to help her on that side, but I struggled with the Evans family, particularly as the dates & places of birth on Army documents didn't match other sources. I had a suspicion that he might have added a couple of years on to his age on enlistment so thank you for confirming this. This morning I have received another message from Kathryn (now resident in Australia) containing HPE's Army record plus a family tree that has just been supplied to her by another family member. This gives HPE's parents as John Evans (1834 - 1874) and Eliza Prosser (b 1838). Fathers of these are given as John Evans and John Prosser respectively, but no dates.
If you are an Ancestry subscriber my username is algobr666 (I'm not sure whether this information alone allows you to look at my family tree) I am now living in Neyland in Pembrokeshire and have been able to make use of the County Records Office for research, and am reasonably confident of the accuracy of my results on the Taylor side, going back to George Taylor b 1821 in Ilsington, Devon; his father possibly Joseph Taylor (1781 - 1853); his father possibly Richard Taylor (no dates).
I would be grateful for the sight of any original documentation relating to either of these families plus any other information that you may have dug up. Also: it may be peripheral to your interests but my mother tells me that MAT had another sister, known to my mother as 'Aunty Sophie'. This lady has a variety of names in the documentation that I have found, i.e. 1883 birth records suggest Mary Sophia Taylor (may be another individual?) 1891 census = Sophia Taylor 1901 census = Maria M Taylor (surely some error?). My mother tells me that she moved to Scotland and died there ~1926. This left MAT & Evaline Taylor as the only surviving members of a family that had had nine children born living (according to 1911 census John Joseph Taylor).
With thanks in anticipation of any assistance that you may be able to offer.
Alan Brown (b 1951 Birmingham), now resident in Neyland, Pembs.

Hi Alan
Sorry to take so long in replying
I hope you don't mind me pointing out that it is Rootschat policy not to give out details of living or potentially living people in our posts .....
I too struggled with HP for years until eventually in 2005 I paid a researcher to find his army record for me, once I had that I was able to work backwards and find him and his family on the various census etc.
Re the Taylor side, I also have a possible father for George b 1821 Ilsington, Devon as Joseph so it looks as though we are both on the same track ....
If you send me a personal message with your email address I can forward copies of the certificates that I have .....
Looking forward to hearing from you

I am related through marriage about three generations down from henry. I am interested in his service record as military service flows through the family.
Thanking you

Hi Adam
Henry's army records are available to view on Findmypast, in Military just enter Henry Prosser Evans, army number 3578 and it should give you the records.
Also you will find several trees on Ancestry which have quite a lot of details about him and his family.
If you don't have a sub for them, reply to this post and then we will be able to swap email addresses by personal message.
Look forward to hearing from you
Sheila
