I am looking for any records of Wm. (possibly William Alfred) and Mary Copeland, emigrants from N. Ireland to Ontario Canada in the 1850s or early 1860s.
The only record I've found to date is a marriage record for their son William Alfred Copeland age 24 to Julia Stephens on 1 Aug 1864 in Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario.
I don't know about other siblings or where the Copelands emigrated from in N. Ireland. William and Julia went to the US in ~1870, but I find no record of other family members in US census records. I wondered if the rest of the family stayed in Canada.

I guess that would have been in the time of the Potato famine...
Sorry, as none of these coincide...do you have some dates for us????
Did anyone else come over with them?

Thank you for the references. I had seen the one on familysearch.org and plan on ordering the film, hoping to see if any other family members show nearby. I have not seen the other two.
The only date I have to go on is the marriage record which means the son William Alfred Copeland would have been born ~1840. Very rough guess work would say the father might have been born 1800-1815. Does the 1871 record you listed show only head of household or does it show other family members?

I don't know anything about the family except what I found on the marriage record and subsequent references to N. Ireland in later US census records as birthplace of father. My great-grandmother filled out a family group sheet in 1940 that said William Alfred Copeland (her father) was "born in Ireland of Scotch parents."
I appreciate your time and attention to my elusive roots. :)

Hi lbj,
This site has many Ottawa Directories - some even as early as the 1860s. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/canadiandirectories/index-e.html
William Copeland is a fairly common name, but you might get lucky...
The Directories aren't listed in any particular order, so you will have to hunt through the drop-down list to check for all relevant ones to search.

ooohhhhhh.... that's a great site, Martha....!!!!
Maybe if you have time sometime add it to the "research in Canada" page.
up in the sticky topics. I never knew this site existed! Thanks from me, also ! J.J.
Just looked through some things and this is an AWESOME site.

Hi, LBJ!!!
Now, I see, your Julie was perhaps (looking at birth date and place of first born) a widow & mother of 5 in 1880: LDS Family Search site. Not to mention that both she and your William were listed as born England. ( see right of listings Eng...Eng...) They had travelled about a fair bit!!!!!

If your Mary of English descent there is a widow in N.Y. born 1807
boarding with a multitude of other widows....
If she was positively Irish there is a widow in Iowa born 1820 Ire
Or in 1881 this could be your William as a widower, also, born 1821:

I would look at the LDS site, anyway to rule out the absolute nots from the 1871...as the others are all listed with wives....
Well.....Hope this helps...( more than hinders!!!) Ha ha! At least you have something to chew on, now!
Good luck with the rest of your searches....J.J.
